Functional approach to the electromagnetic response function: the Longitudinal Channel
In this paper we address the (charge) longitudinal electromagnetic response
for a homogeneous system of nucleons interacting via meson exchanges in the
functional framework. This approach warrants consistency if the calculation is
carried on order-by-order in the mesonic loop expansion with RPA-dressed
mesonic propagators. At the 1-loop order and considering pion, rho and omega
exchanges we obtain a quenching of the response, in line with the experimental

Quasi-Elastic Scattering in the Inclusive (He, t) Reaction
The triton energy spectra of the charge-exchange C(He,t) reaction
at 2 GeV beam energy are analyzed in the quasi-elastic nucleon knock-out
region. Considering that this region is mainly populated by the charge-exchange
of a proton in He with a neutron in the target nucleus and the final proton
going in the continuum, the cross-sections are written in the distorted-wave
impulse approximation. The t-matrix for the elementary exchange process is
constructed in the DWBA, using one pion- plus rho-exchange potential for the
spin-isospin nucleon- nucleon potential. This t-matrix reproduces the
experimental data on the elementary pn np process. The calculated
cross-sections for the C(He,t) reaction at to triton
emission angle are compared with the corresponding experimental data, and are
found in reasonable overall accord.Comment: 19 pages, latex, 11 postscript figures available at

Photo- and Electroproduction of Eta Mesons
Eta photo- and electroproduction off the nucleon is investigated in an
effective lagrangian approach that contains Born terms and both vector meson
and nucleon resonance contributions. In particular, we review and develop the
formalism for coincidence experiments with polarization degrees of freedom. The
different response functions appearing in single and double polarization
experiments have been studied. We will present calculations for structure
functions and kinematical conditions that are most sensitive to details of the
lagrangian, in particular with regard to contributions of nucleon resonances

Role of Vector Mesons in High-Q^2 Lepton-Nucleon Scattering
The possible role played by vector mesons in inclusive deep inelastic
lepton-nucleon scattering is investigated. In the context of the convolution
model, we calculate self-consistently the scaling contribution to the nucleon
structure function using the formalism of time-ordered perturbation theory in
the infinite momentum frame. Our results indicate potentially significant
effects only when the vector meson---nucleon form factor is very hard.
Agreement with the experimental antiquark distributions, however, requires
relatively soft form factors for the , and vertices.Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures (available upon request); accepted for

An isotopic effect in phi photoproduction at a few GeV
A distinct isotopic effect in phi photoproduction at 2-5 GeV region is
identified by examining the production amplitudes due to Pomeron-exchange and
meson-exchange mechanisms. This effect is mainly caused by the pi-eta
interference constrained by SU(3) symmetry and the isotopic structure of the
gamma NN coupling in the direct phi-radiation amplitude. It can be tested
experimentally by measuring differences in the polarization observables between
the gamma-p and gamma-n reactions.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
The high-precision, charge-dependent Bonn nucleon-nucleon potential (CD-Bonn)
We present a charge-dependent nucleon-nucleon (NN) potential that fits the
world proton-proton data below 350 MeV available in the year of 2000 with a
chi^2 per datum of 1.01 for 2932 data and the corresponding neutron-proton data
with chi^2/datum = 1.02 for 3058 data. This reproduction of the NN data is more
accurate than by any phase-shift analysis and any other NN potential. The
charge-dependence of the present potential (that has been dubbed `CD-Bonn') is
based upon the predictions by the Bonn Full Model for charge-symmetry and
charge-independence breaking in all partial waves with J <= 4. The potential is
represented in terms of the covariant Feynman amplitudes for one-boson exchange
which are nonlocal. Therefore, the off-shell behavior of the CD-Bonn potential
differs in a characteristic and well-founded way from commonly used local
potentials and leads to larger binding energies in nuclear few- and many-body

Effective Lagrangian Approach to the Theory of Eta Photoproduction in the Region
We investigate eta photoproduction in the resonance region
within the effective Lagrangian approach (ELA), wherein leading contributions
to the amplitude at the tree level are taken into account. These include the
nucleon Born terms and the leading -channel vector meson exchanges as the
non-resonant pieces. In addition, we consider five resonance contributions in
the - and - channel; besides the dominant , these are:
and . The amplitudes for the
and the photoproduction near threshold have significant
differences, even as they share common contributions, such as those of the
nucleon Born terms. Among these differences, the contribution to the
photoproduction of the -channel excitation of the is the most
significant. We find the off-shell properties of the spin-3/2 resonances to be
important in determining the background contributions. Fitting our effective
amplitude to the available data base allows us to extract the quantity
, characteristic of the
photoexcitation of the resonance and its decay into the
-nucleon channel, of interest to precise tests of hadron models. At the
photon point, we determine it to be from
the old data base, and from a
combination of old data base and new Bates data. We obtain the helicity
amplitude for to be from the old data base, and from the combination of the old data base and new Bates
data, compared with the results of the analysis of pion photoproduction

A sensual philology for Anglo-Saxon England
What forgotten forms can philology assume anew? Reassessing how early medieval writers loved words differently than we do reveals significant gaps between past and presence senses of the physical phenomena words can index. In the early medieval language of Old English texts there remains a largely uncharted capacity for less linguistically driven aspects of expression, formed through a network of words, sounds, bodies and media: how the mute sound of a bell and the crook of a silent finger come together in medieval sign language, or how the Old English word for ring becomes a weeping, poetic gasp within a heaving breast. Such early medieval moments of communication survive because of language and in spite of language, and qualify the visualist framework through which we predictably reconstitute the medieval past, calling, /sotto voce/, for more than lovely words
The strong coupling derived from QCD
We study the two point correlation function of two nucleon currents
sandwiched between the vacuum and the rho meson state. The light cone QCD sum
rules are derived both for vector and tensor couplings
simultaneously. The contribution from the excited states and the continuum is
subtracted cleanly through the double Borel transform with respect to the two
external momenta, , . Our results are , $\kappa_\rho =(8.0\pm 2.0), in good agreement with the values used in
the nuclear forces.Comment: Several references and discussion of final results added, final

-meson production in proton-proton collisions
The production of -mesons in proton-proton collisions is investigated
within a relativistic meson-exchange model of hadronic interactions. The
experimental prerequisites for extracting the coupling strength from
this reaction are discussed. In the absence of a sufficient set of data, which
would enable an accurate determination of the coupling strength, we
perform a combined analysis, based on some reasonable assumptions, of the
existing data for both - and -meson production. We find that the
recent data from the DISTO collaboration on the angular distribution of the
meson indicate that the coupling constant is small. The
analysis yields values for that are compatible with the OZI rule.Comment: 21 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.
