Asian soybean rust: A review of 2005

    Get PDF
After all the excitement about Asian soybean rust this time last year, the 2005 growing season turned out to be somewhat disappointing . . . at least from a plant pathologist\u27s point of view! Jokes aside though, the following is a recap of what happened with Asian soybean rust in the United States in 2005 and so far in 2006. Asian soybean rust was first reported in 2005 in the United States on February 24, on kudzu near Tampa, Florida. It was another two months, April 27, before the second report of the disease was made in Georgia on volunteer soybeans. After the infected plants were closely examined for a short period, they were destroyed

    Surveying Iowa for SCN

Most crop professionals in the Midwest recognize the soybean cyst nematode (SCN) as a widespread, yield-limiting factor. But until the mid-1990s, little was known about the actual distribution of SCN throughout the region. In 1995 and 1996, Iowa State University plant pathologists collaborated with the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) personnel to collect samples from hundreds of randomly selected fields in Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. The work was supported by the soybean checkoff through funds from the North Central Soybean Research Program

Building the Rust Fast Track System for Identifying Asian Soybean Rust in Iowa

Asian soybean rust is a serious soybean leaf disease not yet discovered in Iowa. There are common soybean leaf diseases that may be confused with Asian soybean rust. To achieve accurate and prompt identification of Asian soybean rust throughout the state, the Iowa Soybean Rust Fast Track system was created. This unique system makes use of hundreds of private agricultural professionals throughout Iowa and 40 Iowa State University Extension field personnel to filter out suspected soybean rust samples that are common soybean leaf diseases, thereby ensuring that the ISU Plant Disease clinic is not inundated with minor diseases of soybean

Youth identity formation and contemporary alcohol marketing

    Get PDF
This paper considers linkages between contemporary marketing theory and practice, and emerging conceptualizations of identity, to discuss implications for public health concerns over alcohol use among young people. Particular attention is paid to the theorizing of consumption as a component of youth identities and the ways in which developments of marketing praxis orients to such schemata. The authors’ analyses of exemplars of marketing materials in use in Aotearoa New Zealand, drawn from their research archive, emphasize the sophistication and power of such forms of marketing. They argue that public health policy and practice must respond to the interweaving of marketing and the self-making practices of young people to counter this complex threat to the health and well-being of young people

‘I think it just made everything very much more intense’: A qualitative secondary analysis exploring the role of friends and family providing support to survivors of domestic abuse during the COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic, and associated social restrictions, have amplified women’s experiences of domestic abuse (DA). In usual times, female DA survivors reach out to those around them (friends, family members, neighbors, and colleagues) for support. Accessing of both professional and informal support by survivors has increased during the pandemic. Informal supporters are often deeply invested and immersed in situations of DA because of the closeness of relationships. The accounts of informal supporters are rarely sought, yet these are people who may have a considerable awareness of what is happening. The aim of this study was to explore how the pandemic had impacted people’s assessment of abusive situations and their ability to provide informal support. This paper reports a secondary analysis of qualitative data collected in 2020 in England. The data were gathered in 18 in-depth interviews with people who knew a female friend, relative, neighbor, or colleague who had experienced DA. The age range of participants was 25–69 years, three were men and fifteen were women. A reflexive thematic analysis was carried out. Findings indicated: (i) the pandemic had changed people’s ability to read situations and assess risk (ii) perpetrators were exploiting the pandemic to further abuse (iii) within the context of the pandemic there was additional challenge to offering support (iv) informal supporters found creative ways to remain in-touch and to continue offering support. Further research with informal supporters is needed to ascertain how best to support and equip people, without imposing an impossible burden
