    Classification of Very Red Stars Using Narrowband Colors

    A classification technique for faint, very red stars is described, based on two composite colors, derived from flux measurements in six narrowbands in the visual and red parts of the spectrum. One of the composite colors, ST, is an M spectral type indicator, common to both dwarfs and giants. It can be used to predict the spectral types to within half a class. The other color, DG, is a dwarf-giant discriminator for spectral types later than about M4, and whose power increases for the later types, where most other methods fail. It reflects the differences in blanketing between the late-M type dwarfs and the giants. The method can be generalized to other, similar colors, depending on the data and task at hand. It should be useful in surveys for extreme low-mass dwarfs, or alternatively, for luminous red giants, or other kinds of objects. We illustrate the application of the method on an example of a very red star identified earlier by Blair and Long, and show it to be a distant red giant

    A complete list is given of all lines observed between 5000 and 6650 Ã… in the spectrum of a^2 CVn. Approximately three-quarters of the features have been identified. Lines of Pb ii and P ii are not present. Lines of Gd m and Pr m vary in equivalent width and radial velocity in a manner similar to the singly ionized rare earths. Lines of Cl ii are present and also behave like those of a rare earth

    EPR before EPR: a 1930 Einstein-Bohr thought experiment revisited

    In 1930 Einstein argued against consistency of the time-energy uncertainty relation by discussing a thought experiment involving a measurement of mass of the box which emitted a photon. Bohr seemingly triumphed over Einstein by arguing that the Einstein's own general theory of relativity saves the consistency of quantum mechanics. We revisit this thought experiment from a modern point of view at a level suitable for undergraduate readership and find that neither Einstein nor Bohr was right. Instead, this thought experiment should be thought of as an early example of a system demonstrating nonlocal "EPR" quantum correlations, five years before the famous Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paper.Comment: 11 pages, revised, accepted for publication in Eur.     Hierarchical Spatial Gossip for Multiresolution Representations in Sensor Networks

    In this paper we propose a lightweight algorithm for constructing multi-resolution data representations for sensor networks. At each sensor node u, we compute, O(logn) aggregates about exponentially enlarging neighborhoods centered at u. The ith aggregate is the aggregated data from nodes approximately within 2 i hops of u. We present a scheme, named the hierarchical spatial gossip algorithm, to extract and construct these aggregates, for all sensors simultaneously, with a total communication cost of O(npolylogn). The hierarchical gossip algorithm adopts atomic communication steps with each node choosing to exchange information with a node distance d away with probability ∼ 1/d 3. The attractiveness of the algorithm attributes to its simplicity, low communication cost, distributed nature and robustness to node failures and link failures. We show in addition that computing multi-resolution aggregates precisely (i.e., each aggregate uses all and only the nodes within 2 i hops) requires a communication cost of Ω(n √ n), which does not scale well with network size. An approximate range in aggregate computation like that introduced by the gossip mechanism is therefore necessary in a scalable efficient algorithm. Besides the natural applications of multi-resolution data summaries in data validation and information mining, we also demonstrate the application of the pre-computed multi-resolution data summaries in answering range queries efficiently

    Assessment of Selected Reef Sites in Northern and South-Central Belize, Including Recovery from Bleaching and Hurricane Disturbances (Stony Corals, Algae and Fish)

    The condition of coral. algal. and fish populations in fore reefs. patch reefs, and coral reef ridges was investigated at 13 sites along the northern and south-central Belize barrier reef during May 1999, documenting effects of the 1998 warming episode and Hurricane Mitch. We found high percentages of partial, or even complete, colony mortality of major reef-builders (Acropora palmata, the Montastraea annuluris species complex and Agaricia tenuifolia) that were rarely censused as recruits. A. tenuifolia, formerly a space-dominant coral in reef ridges, had incurred nearly 100% mortality after bleaching. Nearly 45% of the M. annurluris complex was still discolored (50% had been bleached in January 1999) on some south-central patch reefs where the total (recent + old) partial mortality exceeded 60% of colony surfaces. Although turf algae dominated patch reefs and coral reef ridges, macroalgae were quite prevalent representing \u3e30% cover at six sites. Parrotfish densities exceeded surgeontishes at most sites (11/13). Consistent patterns of lower partial-colony mortality of stony corals and greater fish densities and sizes near and within the Hol Chan Marine Reserve highlight the ecological benefits of protected areas for the maintenance of reef corals and attendant fish populations

    Infrared photometry and spectroscopy of the brown dwarf candidate PC0025+0447

    We have obtained I, J, H, Kf and L' photometry and infrared spectroscopy (λ/Δλ ≃ 100) from 1.2-2.4 µm of the unusual emission line M star PC0025+0447. The near infrared photometry shows that this star has infrared colors which are comparable to the latest M dwarf stars such as LHS 2924 and LHS 2065. The infrared colors of PC0025+0447 establish that this star is a dwarf and not a distant giant. The infrared spectrum is dominated by strong H_2O absorption bands, and these bands are the strongest measured in any dwarf. Since H_2O band strength increases with decreasing temperature it is very likely that PC0025-f 0447 is substantially cooler than any of the stars calibrated by Berriman & Reid [MNRAS, 227, 315 (1987)], i.e. T_(eff) 10^9 yr) H burning star, with M ≃ 0.08 M_☉, or a younger brown dwarf

    It is by the long established fact in experiment and theory that electromagnetic waves, here as one component of an IED particle, passing a double slit will undergo self inference each, producing at a detector plane fringed intensities. The wave generating point charge of a zero rest mass, as the other component of the particle, is maintained a constant energy and speed by a repeated radiation reabsorption/reemission scheme, and in turn steered in direction in its linear motion by the reflected radiation field, and will thereby travel to the detector along (one of) the optical path(s) of the waves leading to a bright interference fringe.
