Classical {\it vs.}\ Landau-Ginzburg Geometry of Compactification
We consider superstring compactifications where both the classical
description, in terms of a Calabi-Yau manifold, and also the quantum theory is
known in terms of a Landau-Ginzburg orbifold model. In particular, we study
(smooth) Calabi-Yau examples in which there are obstructions to parametrizing
all of the complex structure cohomology by polynomial deformations thus
requiring the analysis based on exact and spectral sequences. General arguments
ensure that the Landau-Ginzburg chiral ring copes with such a situation by
having a nontrivial contribution from twisted sectors. Beyond the expected
final agreement between the mathematical and physical approaches, we find a
direct correspondence between the analysis of each, thus giving a more complete
mathematical understanding of twisted sectors. Furthermore, this approach shows
that physical reasoning based upon spectral flow arguments for determining the
spectrum of Landau-Ginzburg orbifold models finds direct mathematical
justification in Koszul complex calculations and also that careful point- field
analysis continues to recover suprisingly much of the stringy features.Comment: 14

Measurements of the absolute value of the penetration depth in high- superconductors using a tunnel diode resonator
A method is presented to measure the absolute value of the London penetration
depth, , from the frequency shift of a resonator. The technique
involves coating a high- superconductor (HTSC) with film of low - Tc
material of known thickness and penetration depth. The method is applied to
measure London penetration depth in YBa2Cu3O{7-\delta} (YBCO)
Bi2Sr2CaCu2O{8+\delta} (BSCCO) and Pr{1.85}Ce{0.15}CuO{4-\delta}\lambda (0)\lambda \approx 2790$ \AA, reported for the first
time.Comment: RevTex 4 (beta 4). 4 pages, 4 EPS figures. Submitted to Appl. Phys.

"So what will you do if string theory is wrong?"
I briefly discuss the accomplishments of string theory that would survive a
complete falsification of the theory as a model of nature and argue the
possibility that such a survival may necessarily mean that string theory would
become its own discipline, independently of both physics and mathematics
Raising the unification scale in supersymmetry
In the minimal supersymmetric standard model, the three gauge couplings
appear to unify at a mass scale near GeV. We investigate the
possibility that intermediate scale particle thresholds modify the running
couplings so as to increase the unification scale. By requiring consistency of
this scenario, we derive some constraints on the particle content and locations
of the intermediate thresholds. There are remarkably few acceptable solutions
with a single cleanly defined intermediate scale far below the unification
scale.Comment: 22 pages, macros included. One figure, available at
