    Stability analysis of the Kantowski-Sachs type universe in pure higher derivative gravity theory is studied in details. The non-redundant generalized Friedmann equation of the system is derived by introducing a reduced one dimensional generalized KS type action. This method greatly reduces the labor in deriving field equations of any complicate models. Existence and stability of inflationary solution in the presence of higher derivative terms are also studied in details.     Radio Spectral Index and Expansion of 3C58

    We present new observations of the plerionic supernova remnant 3C58 with the VLA at 74 and 327 MHz. In addition, we re-reduced earlier observations at 1.4 and 4.9 GHz taken in 1973 and 1984. Comparing these various images, we find that: 1. the remnant has a flat and relatively uniform spectral index distribution, 2. any expansion of the remnant with time is significantly less than that expected for uniform, undecelerated expansion since the generally accepted explosion date in 1181 A.D., and 3. there is no evidence for a non-thermal synchrotron emission shell generated by a supernova shock wave, with any such emission having a surface brightness of <1 x 10^(-21) W / (m^2 Hz sr) at 327 MHz.Comment: 18 pages, 7 Figures, Latex, Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa

    We replace the group of group-like elements of the quantized enveloping algebra Uq(g)U_q({\frak{g}}) of a finite dimensional semisimple Lie algebra g{\frak g} by some regular monoid and get the weak Hopf algebra wqd(g){\frak{w}}_q^{\sf d}({\frak g}). It is a new subclass of weak Hopf algebras but not Hopf algebras. Then we devote to constructing a basis of wqd(g){\frak{w}}_q^{\sf d}({\frak g}) and determine the group of weak Hopf algebra automorphisms of wqd(g){\frak{w}}_q^{\sf d}({\frak g}) when qq is not a root of unity.Comment: 21 page

    Are There Topological Black Hole Solitons in String Theory?

    We point out that the celebrated Hawking effect of quantum instability of black holes seems to be related to a nonperturbative effect in string theory. Studying quantum dynamics of strings in the gravitational background of black holes we find classical instability due to emission of massless string excitations. The topology of a black hole seems to play a fundamental role in developing the string theory classical instability due to the effect of sigma model instantons. We argue that string theory allows for a qualitative description of black holes with very small masses and it predicts topological solitons with quantized spectrum of masses. These solitons would not decay into string massless excitations but could be pair created and may annihilate also. Semiclassical mass quantization of topological solitons in string theory is based on the argument showing existence of nontrivial zeros of beta function of the renormalization group.Comment: 12 pages, TeX, requires phyzzx.tex, published in Gen.     The FUSE survey of OVI absorption in and near the Galaxy

    We present FUSE observations of OVI absorption in a sample of 100 extragalactic targets and 2 distant halo stars. We describe the details of the calibration, alignment in velocity, continuum fitting, and manner in which contaminants were removed (Galactic H2, absorption intrinsic to the background target and intergalactic Ly-beta lines). We searched for OVI absorption in the velocity range -1200 to 1200 km/s. With a few exceptions, we only find OVI between -400 and 400 km/s; the exceptions may be intergalactic OVI. We discuss the separation of the observed OVI absorption into components associated with the Galactic halo and components at high-velocity, which are probably located in the neighborhood of the Galaxy. We describe the measurements of equivalent width and column density, and we analyze the different contributions to the errors. We conclude that low-velocity Galactic OVI absorption occurs along all sightlines - the few non-detections only occur in noisy spectra. We further show that high-velocity OVI is very common, having equivalent width >65 mAA in 50% of the sightlines and >30 mAA in 70% of the high-quality sightlines. The high-velocity OVI absorption has velocities relative to the LSR of +/-(100--330) km/s; there is no correlation between velocity and absorption strength. We present 50 km/s wide OVI channel maps. These show evidence for the imprint of Galactic rotation. They also highlight two known HI high-velocity clouds (complex~C and the Magellanic Stream). The channel maps further show that OVI at velocities <-200 km/s occurs along all sightlines in the region l=20-150, b200 km/s occurs along all sightlines in the region l=180-300, b>20 (abbreviated).Comment: 85 pages, 127 figures, 13 color figures, 3 tables, AASTeX preprint format.
