Business Critical: Understanding a Company’s Current and Desired Stages of Corporate Responsibility Maturity

    Get PDF
It’s been a while since the Corporate Responsibility profession took stock of its collective wisdom on where we have been, and where we are going on running businesses responsibly. Meanwhile hardly a week goes by without a helpful suggestion from the outside world on how an organisation should improve its economic value, social usefulness and environmental efficiency; and it is very easy to spot businesses that get their social, environmental and economic decisions out of balance: these organisations hit the headlines seemingly within nanoseconds. On the upside, businesses are increasingly taking an approach that builds an Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) premium into the core economic valuation. This is achieved by those organisations which bring in a diverse set of views to inform risk and reputation management activities, and to build a research and development pipeline for the future. This is managing both the negative and the positive social, environmental and economic impacts

Metabotropic glutamate 2/3 receptors and epigenetic modifications in psychotic disorders: a review

    Get PDF
Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder are chronic psychiatric disorders, both considered as "major psychosis"; they are thought to share some pathogenetic factors involving a dysfunctional gene x environment interaction. Alterations in the glutamatergic transmission have been suggested to be involved in the pathogenesis of psychosis. Our group developed an epigenetic model of schizophrenia originated by Prenatal Restraint Stress (PRS) paradigm in mice. PRS mice developed some behavioral alterations observed in schizophrenic patients and classic animal models of schizophrenia, i.e. deficits in social interaction, locomotor activity and prepulse inhibition. They also showed specific changes in promoter DNA methylation activity of genes related to schizophrenia such as reelin, BDNF and GAD67, and altered expression and function of mGlu2/3 receptors in the frontal cortex. Interestingly, behavioral and molecular alterations were reversed by treatment with mGlu2/3 agonists. Based on these findings, we speculate that pharmacological modulation of these receptors could have a great impact on early phase treatment of psychosis together with the possibility to modulate specific epigenetic key protein involved in the development of psychosis. In this review, we will discuss in more details the specific features of the PRS mice as a suitable epigenetic model for major psychosis. We will then focus on key proteins of chromatin remodeling machinery as potential target for new pharmacological treatment through the activation of metabotropic glutamate receptors

Anomalous magnetoresistance peak in (110) GaAs two-dimensional holes: Evidence for Landau-level spin-index anticrossings

We measure an anomalous magnetoresistance peak within the lowest Landau level (nu = 1) minimum of a two-dimensional hole system on (110) GaAs. Self-consistent calculations of the valence band mixing show that the two lowest spin-index Landau levels anticross in a perpendicular magnetic field B consistent with where the experimental peak is measured, Bp. The temperature dependence of the anomalous peak height is interpreted as an activated behavior across this anticrossing gap. Calculations of the spin polarization in the lowest Landau levels predict a rapid switch from about -3/2 to +3/2 spin at the anticrossing. The peak position Bp is shown to be affected by the confinement electrostatics, and the utility of a tunable anticrossing position for spintronics applications is discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Potential effects of the introduction of the discrete address beacon system data link on air/ground information transfer problems

    Get PDF
This study of Aviation Safety Reporting System reports suggests that benefits should accure from implementation of discrete address beacon system data link. The phase enhanced terminal information system service is expected to provide better terminal information than present systems by improving currency and accuracy. In the exchange of air traffic control messages, discrete address insures that only the intended recipient receives and acts on a specific message. Visual displays and printer copy of messages should mitigate many of the reported problems associated with voice communications. The problems that remain unaffected include error in addressing the intended recipient and messages whose content is wrong but are otherwise correct as to format and reasonableness
