More than a Match: The Role of Football in Britainâs Deaf Community
The University of Central Lancashire has undertaken a major research project into the role of
football within the deaf community in Britain. As well as reconstructing the long history of deaf
involvement in football for the first time, the project has also focused on the way in which
football has provided deaf people with a means of developing and maintaining social contacts
within the community, and of expressing the communityâs cultural values. This article will
draw on primary data gathered from interviews conducted with people involved in deaf football
in a variety of capacities. During the course of these interviews, a number of themes and issues
emerged relating to the values and benefits those involved with deaf football place on the game,
and it is these which are explored here
VOSpace: a Prototype for Grid 2.0
As Grid 1.0 was characterized by distributed computation, so Grid 2.0 will be characterized by distributed data and the infrastructure needed to support and exploit it: the emerging success of Amazon S3 is already testimony to this. VOSpace is the IVOA interface standard for accessing distributed data. Although the base definition (VOSpace 1.0) only relates to flat, unconnected data stores, subsequent versions will add additional layers of functionality. In this paper, we consider how incorporating popular web concepts such as folksonomies (tagging), social networking, and data-spaces could lead to a much richer data environment than provided by a traditional collection of networked data stores
McRunjob: A High Energy Physics Workflow Planner for Grid Production Processing
McRunjob is a powerful grid workflow manager used to manage the generation of
large numbers of production processing jobs in High Energy Physics. In use at
both the DZero and CMS experiments, McRunjob has been used to manage large
Monte Carlo production processing since 1999 and is being extended to uses in
regular production processing for analysis and reconstruction. Described at
CHEP 2001, McRunjob converts core metadata into jobs submittable in a variety
of environments. The powerful core metadata description language includes
methods for converting the metadata into persistent forms, job descriptions,
multi-step workflows, and data provenance information. The language features
allow for structure in the metadata by including full expressions, namespaces,
functional dependencies, site specific parameters in a grid environment, and
ontological definitions. It also has simple control structures for
parallelization of large jobs. McRunjob features a modular design which allows
for easy expansion to new job description languages or new application level

Control rod monitoring of advanced gas-cooled reactors
The UKâs fleet of Advanced Gas Cooled Reactors (AGR) are approaching, and have in some cases exceeded, their original design lives. Continued operation is under enhanced safety cases based on monitoring, inspection and component condition assessment of the core and related systems. This paper presents an analysis of the regulating control rods of an AGR, which are used to manage the power and reactivity of the core. Current manual analyses attempt to detect possible restrictions in the motion of the rods due to degradation of the graphite core, however the development of an automated intelligent analysis of the control rod data provides a repeatable and auditable method of analyzing the data. It is shown, by means of an example data set, that despite some limitations in the scope of the recorded data, it is possible to estimate the performance of the rods and present this information to the engineer in a way that more easily indicates abnormal behavior than existing analyses. It is also noted that though this work was initially conceived as a method of detecting restrictions in the motion of the regulating control rods, the results are potentially more useful is characterizing control rod performance and has potential application in predictive maintenance
Oxylipin Signaling: A Distinct Role for the Jasmonic Acid Precursor cis-(+)-12-Oxo-Phytodienoic Acid (cis-OPDA)
Oxylipins are lipid-derived compounds, many of which act as signals in the plant response to biotic and abiotic stress. They include the phytohormone jasmonic acid (JA) and related jasmonate metabolites cis-(+)-12-oxo-phytodienoic acid (cis-OPDA), methyl jasmonate, and jasmonoyl-L-isoleucine (JA-Ile). Besides the defense response, jasmonates are involved in plant growth and development and regulate a range of processes including glandular trichome development, reproduction, root growth, and senescence. cis-OPDA is known to possess a signaling role distinct from JA-Ile. The non-enzymatically derived phytoprostanes are structurally similar to cis-OPDA and induce a common set of genes that are not responsive to JA in Arabidopsis thaliana. A novel role for cis-OPDA in seed germination regulation has recently been uncovered based on evidence from double mutants and feeding experiments showing that cis-OPDA interacts with abscisic acid (ABA), inhibits seed germination, and increases ABA INSENSITIVE5 (ABI5) protein abundance. Large amounts of cis-OPDA are esterified to galactolipids in A. thaliana and the resulting compounds, known as Arabidopsides, are thought to act as a rapidly available source of cis-OPDA

Evaluating the cost of managing patients with cellulitis in Wales, UK: A 20-year population-scale study
This study aimed to estimate costs associated with managing patients with cellulitis from the UK National Health Service (NHS) perspective. The analysis was undertaken through the Secure Anonymised Information Linkage Databank, which brings together population-scale, individual-level anonymised linked data from a wide range of sources, including 80% of primary care general practices within Wales (population coverage ~3.2 million). The data covered a 20-year period from 1999 to 2019. All patients linked to the relevant codes were tracked through primary care settings, recording the number of general practice visits (number of days with an event recorded) and number of in-patient stays. Resources were valued in monetary terms (ÂŁ sterling), with costs determined from national published sources of unit costs. These resources were then extrapolated out to reflect UK NHS costs. This is the first attempt to estimate the financial burden of cellulitis using routine data sources on a national scale. The estimated direct annual costs to the Welsh NHS (ÂŁ28â554â338) are considerable. In-Patient events and length of stay costs are the main cost drivers, with annual Welsh NHS estimates of ÂŁ19â664â126 with primary care events costing ÂŁ8â890â212. Initiatives to support patients and healthcare professionals in identifying early signs/risks of cellulitis, improve the accuracy of initial diagnosis, prevent cellulitis recurrence, and improve evidence-based treatment pathways would result in major financial savings, to both the Welsh and UK NHS. In light of these findings, Wales has developed the innovative National Lymphoedema cellulitis Improvement Programme to address these burdens; providing a proactive model of cellulitis care
