The steady states of positive reaction-diffusion equations with Dirichlet conditions

We study the uniqueness of reaction-diffusion steady states in general domains with Dirichlet boundary data. Here we consider "positive" (monostable) reactions. We describe geometric conditions on the domain that ensure uniqueness and we provide complementary examples of nonuniqueness. Along the way, we formulate a number of open problems and conjectures. To derive our results, we develop a general framework, the stable-compact method, to study qualitative properties of nonlinear elliptic equations.Comment: 50 page

One-To-Many: Building a single-search interface for disparate resources

Libraries provide access to a complex array of resources, but it comes as little surprise that many struggle with this task. The ubiquity of Google in modern research has placed libraries in the position of trying to emulate or set themselves apart from the search engine, regardless of how appropriate it is to compare libraries to Google. There are numerous ways in which libraries can improve the search and discovery experience for patrons, and for many, this improvement currently comes in the form of custom-built or commercial discovery systems—which aggregate disparate library content into a single results display. But, regardless of discovery systems’ potential, as Lown, Sierra, and Boyer (2013) conclude, libraries should learn and balance user expectations with the actual capabilities of library information systems. In an effort to find this balance, our work led us to a singular goal: providing a single-search interface for our complex array of library resources. What resulted was a discovery tool we named QuickSearch

This Article summarizes and discusses important cases, legislation, and regulations issued or enacted pertaining to the oil and gas jurisprudence of West Virginia between September 1, 2010, and August 31, 2011. The Authors acknowledge that the term important is subjec- tive; nevertheless, they endeavor to discuss the most germane cases and regulations affecting the oil and gas industry. This Article is divided into two parts. Part One discusses a very important regulation promulgated by the Office of Oil and Gas, a division of the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, regarding water use by the oil and gas industry when drilling horizontal wells. Noticeably absent from this Part is any discussion of major legislation affecting the oil and gas industry. During the requisite period, no significant legislation was enacted, which the Authors subjectively deemed worthy of discussion. Nevertheless, the legislature introduced numerous bills, which if enacted, would have substantially impacted the oil and gas industry. Part Two of this Article discusses developments in West Virginia\u27s case law regarding oil and gas. In this Part, the Authors will discuss and analyze major decisions issued by the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals ( Supreme Court of Appeals ), one important case litigated in the Circuit Court of Monongalia County, West Virginia, and the United States District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of West Virginia
