    How to get tenured

Getting a tenured position in economics in Germany is viewed as a random outcome where the probability of tenure depends on the quantity and qual- ity of publications, age and years since PhD. We measure publications both in units of Top 5 journals and in units of the European Economic Review (EER). We find that the average age of a professor in the year of his first appointment in Germany in the period of 1970 to 2005 is 38. This is ap- proximately 8 years after the PhD. He has 1.5 "standardized" Top 5 papers or 2.2 "standardized" EER papers, i.e. written with one coauthor and of 20 pages length. Results vary across subfields and over time. Someone aiming for a tenured job after 2010 should by then (average over all fields) have 3.3 standardized Top 5 papers or 5 standardized EER papers.

    Essays in labour economics

In this thesis I study the nature of labour income risk and labour market dynamics. The first chapter attempts to enhance our understanding of the interplay between labour and financial markets. We develop a simple general equilibrium model with labour market frictions and an imperfect financial market. When calibrating the model to the Great Recession and its aftermath, we find that the lack of an improvement in the financial sector’s effectiveness to intermediate resources played a crucial role in the slow recovery of the labour market. The second chapter uses rich Norwegian population panel data to provide new evidence on labour income risk over the life cycle. We find that the income processes differ systematically by age, skill level and their interaction. Our findings suggest that the redistributive nature of the Norwegian tax–transfer system plays a key role in attenuating the magnitude and persistence of income shocks, especially among the low skilled. The third chapter presents an estimated income process that is consistent with recent evidence on income risk over the life and business cycle. Using Norwegian population panel data, we estimate an income process that allows income risk within each skill group to depend on the previous income level, calendar time and experience. The fourth chapter attempts to bridge the gap between the literature on income dynamics and the search and matching literature. We develop a frictional model of the labour market in which inequality in earnings and consumption results from the interaction between heterogeneity of workers, heterogeneity of jobs, shocks to human capital, and labour market frictions

Counting unstained, confluent cells by modified bright-field microscopy

We present a very simple procedure yielding high-contrast images of adherent, confluent cells such as human neuroblastoma (SH-EP) cells by ordinary bright-field microscopy. Cells are illuminated through a color filter and a pinhole aperture placed between the condenser and the cell culture surface. Refraction by each cell body generates a sharp, bright spot when the image is defocused. The technique allows robust, automatic cell counting from a single bright-field image in a wide range of focal positions using free, readily available image-analysis tools. Contrast may be enhanced by swelling cell bodies with a brief incubation in PBS. The procedure was benchmarked against manual and automated counting of fluorescently labeled cell nuclei. Counts from day-old and freshly seeded plates were compared in a range of densities, from sparse to densely overgrown. On average, bright-field images produced the same counts as fluorescence images, with less than 5% error. This method will allow routine cell counting using a plain bright-field microscope without cell-line modification or cell staining
