    Speaker Normalization Methods for Vowel Cognition: Comparative Analysis Using Neural Network and Nearest Neighbor Classifiers

    Intrinsic and extrinsic speaker normalization methods are systematically compared using a neural network (fuzzy ARTMAP) and L1 and L2 K-Nearest Neighbor (K-NN) categorizers trained and tested on disjoint sets of speakers of the Peterson-Barney vowel database. Intrinsic methods include one nonscaled, four psychophysical scales (bark, bark with endcorrection, mel, ERB), and three log scales, each tested on four combinations of F0 , F1, F2, F3. Extrinsic methods include four speaker adaptation schemes, each combined with the 32 intrinsic methods: centroid subtraction across all frequencies (CS), centroid subtraction for each frequency (CSi), linear scale (LS), and linear transformation (LT). ARTMAP and KNN show similar trends, with K-NN performing better, but requiring about ten times as much memory. The optimal intrinsic normalization method is bark scale, or bark with endcorrection, using the differences between all frequencies (Diff All).     Representations of Composite Braids and Invariants for Mutant Knots and Links in Chern-Simons Field Theories

    We show that any of the new knot invariants obtained from Chern-Simons theory based on an arbitrary non-abelian gauge group do not distinguish isotopically inequivalent mutant knots and links. In an attempt to distinguish these knots and links, we study Murakami (symmetrized version) rr-strand composite braids. Salient features of the theory of such composite braids are presented. Representations of generators for these braids are obtained by exploiting properties of Hilbert spaces associated with the correlators of Wess-Zumino conformal field theories. The rr-composite invariants for the knots are given by the sum of elementary Chern-Simons invariants associated with the irreducible representations in the product of rr representations (allowed by the fusion rules of the corresponding Wess-Zumino conformal field theory) placed on the rr individual strands of the composite braid. On the other hand, composite invariants for links are given by a weighted sum of elementary multicoloured Chern-Simons invariants. Some mutant links can be distinguished through the composite invariants, but mutant knots do not share this property.     Chirality of Knots 9429_{42} and 107110_{71} and Chern-Simons Theory

    Upto ten crossing number, there are two knots, 9429_{42} and 107110_{71} whose chirality is not detected by any of the known polynomials, namely, Jones invariants and their two variable generalisations, HOMFLY and Kauffman invariants. We show that the generalised knot invariants, obtained through SU(2)SU(2) Chern-Simons topological field theory, which give the known polynomials as special cases, are indeed sensitive to the chirality of these knots.Comment: 15 pages + 7 diagrams (available on request

    Feature-level fusion in multimodal biometrics

    Multimodal biometric systems utilize the evidence presented by multiple biometric modalities (e.g., face and fingerprint, multiple fingers of a user, multiple impressions of a single finger, etc.) in order to determine or verify the identity of an individual. Information from multiple sources can be consolidated in three distinct levels [1]: (i) feature set level; (ii) match score level; and (iii) decision level. While fusion at the match score and decision levels have been extensively studied in the literature, fusion at the feature level is a relatively understudied problem. A novel technique to perform fusion at the feature level by considering two biometric modalities---face and hand geometry, is presented in this paper. Also, a new distance metric conscripted as the Thresholded Absolute Distance (TAD) is used to help reinforce the system\u27s robustness towards noise. Finally, two techniques are proposed to consolidate information available after match score fusion, with that obtained after feature set fusion. These techniques further enhance the performance of the multimodal biometric system and help find an approximate upper bound on its performance. Results indicate that the proposed techniques can lead to substantial improvement in multimodal matching abilities

    Instability of a free-shear layer in the vicinity of a viscosity-stratified layer

    The stability of a mixing layer made up of two miscible fluids, with a viscosity-stratified layer between them, is studied. The two fluids are of the same density. It is shown that unlike other viscosity-stratified shear flows, where species diffusivity is a dominant factor determining stability, species diffusivity variations over orders of magnitude do not change the answer to any noticeable degree in this case. Viscosity stratification, however, does matter, and can stabilize or destabilize the flow, depending on whether the layer of varying velocity is located within the less or more viscous fluid. By making an inviscid model flow with a slope change across the 'viscosity' interface, we show that viscous and inviscid results are in qualitative agreement. The absolute instability of the flow can also be significantly altered by viscosity stratification

    A study on morbidity and mortality pattern of poisoning in tertiary care hospital

    Background: The poisoning due to various reasons commonly occurs among population. Normally tertiary care hospitals receive large numbers of referral. During treatment many die due to poisoning.  Objectives of the study were to find out the magnitude of admissions due to poisoning and to find out various type of poisoning and related mortality.Methods: The secondary data was collected from records available in Intensive care unit of toxicology department of tertiary care hospital. The admissions made due to various type of poisoning from Jan 2015 to Dec 2015 were included in this study. The data of nearly 947 patients were analyzed regarding to type of poising and mortality due to the poisoning. Statistical analysis like percentage, Chi-square test and mean variance significant were calculated.Results: Out of 947, 70% were male and 30% were female. Among patients admitted 44% were consumed organophosphorus compounds, 22% had snake bite and 13% were consumed rat killer paste. The other common but least were drugs, rat killer powder and kerosene poisoning. Among admitted with various type of poisoning overall mortality was 36% and 58% due to organophosphorus compounds, 16% with rate killer paste and 14% with snake bite. The snake bite mostly occurred in rainy season and it is statistically significant.Conclusions: Most of the poisoning due to organophosphorus shows that it is available very easily and also cheap. The death among the poisoning is due to delay in starting of the treatment and awareness should be made to avail medical care immediately after poisoning without delay.
