    Second-generation biofuels : economics and policies

    Recent increases in production of crop-based (or first-generation) biofuels have engendered increasing concerns over potential conflicts with food supplies and land protection, as well as disputes over greenhouse gas reductions. This has heightened a sense of urgency around the development of biofuels produced from non-food biomass (second-generation biofuels). This study reviews the economic potential and environmental implications of production of second-generation biofuels from a variety of various feedstocks. Although second-generation biofuels could significantly contribute to the future energy supply mix, cost is a major barrier to increasing commercial production in the near to medium term. Depending on various factors, the cost of second-generation (cellulosic) ethanol can be two to three times as high as the current price of gasoline on an energy equivalent basis. The cost of biodiesel produced from microalgae, a prospective feedstock, is many times higher than the current price of diesel.     Partial DNA Assembly: A Rate-Distortion Perspective

    Earlier formulations of the DNA assembly problem were all in the context of perfect assembly; i.e., given a set of reads from a long genome sequence, is it possible to perfectly reconstruct the original sequence? In practice, however, it is very often the case that the read data is not sufficiently rich to permit unambiguous reconstruction of the original sequence. While a natural generalization of the perfect assembly formulation to these cases would be to consider a rate-distortion framework, partial assemblies are usually represented in terms of an assembly graph, making the definition of a distortion measure challenging. In this work, we introduce a distortion function for assembly graphs that can be understood as the logarithm of the number of Eulerian cycles in the assembly graph, each of which correspond to a candidate assembly that could have generated the observed reads. We also introduce an algorithm for the construction of an assembly graph and analyze its performance on real genomes.Comment: To be published at ISIT-2016. 11 pages, 10 figure

    PHASE CHANGE MATERIALS (PCM) FOR THERMAL CONTROL DURING SPACECRAFT TRANSPORTATION

    Phase Change materials (PCMs) absorb and release latent heat during their phase transition nearly at constant temperature. The latent heat storage phenomena using PCMs provides much higher storage density, with a smaller or zero temperature difference while storing and releasing of heat. PCMs have 5-14 times more heat capacity per unit volume than sensible storage materials that merits their usage as passive thermal control systems. They are effectively complemented with active thermal control systems in order to minimize their duty cycles and optimize the capacity. This paper discusses a passive thermal control system using PCMs to maintain the temperature within the limits inside the enclosures used for transportation of spacecrafts. Further, various applications of PCMs in the thermal control architecture as applied to spacecrafts are also discussed. The paper also discusses about the technologies such as Onboard power generation, Universal Spacecraft thermal control architecture and other significant spacecraft applications

    Academic Staff and Industry Revolution 4.0: Knowledge, Innovation and Learning Factor

    The higher education institutions play a very important role in developing the readiness of academic staff on IR 4.0 which might increase the quality of education system through implementing the effective learning factors, efficiency knowledge management factors, and creative thinking with the innovation capability. Here, the academic staff must further explore the new knowledge, innovation, and learning factors that could be used in their teaching and learning. The research model was taken from previous studies on examining the feasibilities of Industry 4.0 for the hospitality sector with the lens of management practice. The data was analyzed by using the IBM SPSS Statistics v21 and the five-point Likert scale represented by Information Literacy Education Implementation Readiness Scale was used to measure the respondents’ readiness level on IR 4.0. Descriptive analysis than was used in this research to further explore the mean factors which are learning, knowledge management and innovation capability, and the academic staffs’ readiness for IR 4.0.. The results indicated that the learning institutions played a very important role in developing the readiness of academic staff on IR 4.0 which may increase the quality of education system through implementing the effective learning factors, efficiency knowledge management factors and creative thinking with innovation capability factors

    Disseminated Microsporidiosis Due to Encephalitozoon hellem: Pulmonary Colonization, Microhematuria, and Mild Conjunctivitis in a Patient with AIDS

    Four genera of microsporidia have been associated with disease in humans, which predominantly affects immunocompromised persons. Systemic infection with a newly characterized microsporidian species, Encephalitozoon hellem, was recently reported in a patient with AIDS. This article describes a second patient with AIDS and disseminated E. hellem infection. In this case the parasite was detected in sputum, urine, and conjunctival swab specimens. Apart from recurrent mild conjunctivitis and asymptomatic microhematuria, the patient had no findings or symptoms that could be related to this parasite. Specifically, no microsporidian-associated pulmonary pathology was documented. Detection of E. hellem in the patient's sputum may have epidemiological implications in that this finding suggests transmission of microsporidia by the aerosol route. Because the patient died of unrelated complications, it remains unknown whether he was an asymptomatic carrier of microsporidia or whether microhematuria heralded early microsporidian disease, with the onset of cellular damage in the urinary trac
