Academic job satisfaction and motivation : findings from a nationwide study in Portuguese higher education
Published online: 31 Jul 2014Academic staff is a key resource in higher education institutions (HEIs) and therefore has a major role in the achievement of the objectives of these institutions. Satisfied and well-motivated academic staff can build a national and international reputation for themselves and their institutions. Moreover, the performance of academic staff impacts student learning. In this context, the study of academic staff job satisfaction and motivation to perform their professional activities becomes crucial, especially as higher education is traversed by multiple changes. The purpose of this paper is to present and analyze the findings of a nationwide study on satisfaction and motivation of academics. All academics working in Portuguese HEIs were invited to complete a survey online. The data obtained from 4529 academics were extensively analyzed and findings are presented here along with their implications for HEIs in Portugal.
Palavras-Chave: Satisfação no trabalho; motivação; docentes; ensino superior
The impact of social networks on the quality of life of individuals aged 50 and over who live alone in Portugal: a study in the context of the share project
A maior
A pesquisa desenvolvida no âmbito
recurso a dados relativos à quarta vaga do projeto SHARE (Survey of Health,
Ageing and Retirement in Europe).
apoio emocional, convivência, entretenimento e apoio material e instrumental.
This study focuses on the Quality of Life of older people living alone, considered
one of the most vulnerable social groups in Portugal. More specifically, we
aimed to know to what extent, and how, the quality of life of individuals aged 50
and over who live alone in Portugal is related to the role played by their social
networks. The main part of the literature indicates that social networks have
positive effects on the well-being of the older population in general. However,
networks may also have negative effects, as occurs, for instance, in the case of
abuse of an older person. The research carried out in the context of this thesis
provides a better knowledge about this relationship and points out additional
factors which are related with the quality of life among the population under
scrutiny, more specifically sociodemographic status and health condition. In
addition, it contributes to our awareness of the objective conditions of life of
these persons and our understanding of their social representations regarding
ageing while living alone.
The study was designed in an effort to triangulate quantitative and qualitative
methods. The quantitative part of the work was carried out with recourse to data
related to the fourth wave of the SHARE project (Survey of Health, Ageing and
Retirement in Europe). As regards the networks of the persons examined, it
should be emphasized that SHARE only focuses on confidant networks
(networks made up of members who are confidants/considered important to
respondents).
From the quantitative analysis we concluded that individuals aged 50 and over
living alone in Portugal distinguish themselves from their counterparts in other
European countries, in that they have worse health conditions and poor
educational and economic-financial resources. Regarding the research
question, the analysis shows that the confidant networks of the respondents
have a fundamental role in their quality of life. Concretely, individuals who are
more satisfied with their network and who carry out a higher number of activities
with the network have a better quality of life. A higher appreciation can be observed of the satisfaction with the network (which points at the quality of the
network) and of the social activity, and a lower value is attributed to the
structure and frequency of the contact. It is possible that the habituation to living
alone and/or to the loss or death of members of the network, which a great part
of these persons have experienced in the course of their lives, has led to this
appreciation.
Regarding the interviews conducted, the qualitative analysis shows that the
social network is important for the quality of life, in particular for the providing of
emotional support, social interaction, entertainment and material and
instrumental assistance. Thus, the social networks of the major part of the
respondents generate resources (social capital) which the people in question
may employ to their own benefit, thus having a positive influence on their quality
of life.
In view of the results obtained in this study, an expansion and improvement of
public policies which promote the social integration of older, alone-living
persons, is considered essential. Considering the social relevance of the theme,
the growth of the ageing population living alone, and the dearth of studies about
the relationship between social networks and quality of life of this population, it
is hoped that this research will be a contribution to the scientific knowledge
about this theme.
Given the evident and growing aging and the economic and financial crisis today in
Portuguese society, it was intended, first, to characterize the quality of life and the
social networks of one of the social groups considered most vulnerable in Portugal,
the group of the elderly who live alone. The case study presented here also had as
main objective to produce knowledge about the relationship between social networks
and quality of life in a sample of elderly people living alone in Matosinhos.
An eclectic approach involving quantitative and qualitative techniques, specifically the
use of questionnaire surveys and semi-structured interviews, allowed the observation
of results considered relevant to support the work of those responsible for policy
making.
Regarding the characterization of the social networks of the elderly, they are small
networks, with high density, providing a high degree of satisfaction, mainly
constituted by family, with high residential proximity and considerable contact
frequency. However, the percentage of people who provide and receive social
support almost every day in the social network of the elderly is reduced. With respect
to the perception of quality of life of the elderly respondents, measured by WHOQOLOLD,
it is, on average, 57.49 on a scale of 0 to 100. There is no statistically
significant difference between women and men regarding their quality of life. There is
a positive and statistically significant correlation between quality of life and (1) health
status, (2) social network size and (3) the degree of emotional support provided by
the elderly. There is also a negative and statistically significant association between
the degree of instrumental support received by the elderly and their quality of life

Later life and public policies in time of crisis: Portugal, 2008–13
This article presents an analysis of public policies implemented in Portugal between 2008 and 2013 affecting the older segments of the population, specifically those aged 50 years and over. Research on this period is relevant because it was a time of economic and financial crisis and concomitant changes in government policy. By making a content analysis of the laws published on the website of the Diário da República (Portuguese State Gazette) three periods could be distinguished: January 2008 to May 2010, which was dominated by an emancipatory logic reflecting respect for social rights; June 2010 to September 2012; and then October 2012 to December 2013, in which a logic of austerity prevailed, especially in the last period, with negative consequences for the quality of life of senior citizens.Foundation for Science and Technology. What factors of satisfaction and motivation are affecting the development of the academic career in Portuguese higher education institutions?
An important constituent group and a key resource of higher education institutions (HEIs) is the faculty or academic staff. The centrality of the faculty role makes it a primary sculptor of institutional culture and has implications for the quality of the institution and therefore has a major role in achieving the objectives of the institution. Demand for academic staff in higher education has been increasing and may be expected to continue to increase. Moreover the performance of academic staff as teachers and researchers determines much of the student satisfaction and has an impact on student learning. There are many factors that serve to undermine the commitment of academics to their institutions and careers. Job satisfaction is important in revitalizing staff motivation and in keeping their enthusiasm alive. Well motivated academic staff can, with appropriate support, build a national and international reputation for themselves and the institution in the professional areas, in research and in publishing. This paper aims to identify the issues and their impacts on academic staff job satisfaction and motivation within Portuguese higher education institutions reporting an ongoing study financed by the European Union through the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology
