    Diagnóstico da otite média em cães: comparação entre radiografia convencional, canalografia e audiometria de impedância

    Radiography (conventional and contrasted - canalography) and audioelectrophysiologic (impedance audiometry) tests were correlated with otitis media in 12 middle ear affected and 12 healthy dogs. When comparing both diagnostic methods, it was found that the reliability in the detection of otitis media in dogs was 100% for the first and 58.3-60.0% for the latter. Thus, it was possible to attest that the impedance audiometry was the most accurate method in the identification of otitis media in dogs when compared with radiographic assessments

    Ototoxicity and tolerance assessment of a TrisEDTA and polyhexamethylene biguanide ear flush formulation in dogs

    Clinically healthy mixed breed dogs (n = 20) were used to determine if a Tris (tromethamine)-buffered test solution, Otinide((R)) (Trademark of Dermcare-Vet Pty-Ltd, Australia), containing disodium ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA; 1.21 g/L) and polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB; 0.22 g/L) caused ototoxicity or vestibular dysfunction. The dogs were randomly assigned to either a control group (group A, n = 10) receiving saline, or a treatment group (group B, n = 10) receiving the test solution. Phase 1 of the study consisted of applying 5.0 mL of saline to both ears of the control group (group A) and 5 mL of test solution to both ears of the test group (group B), for 21 days. A bilateral myringotomy was then performed on each dog under deep sedation. Phase 2 of the study then consisted of applying 2.0 mL of the saline to both ears of the control group (group A) and 2.0 mL of the test solution to both ears of the test group (group B), for 14 days. Throughout the study, dogs were examined for clinical health, and underwent otoscopic, vestibular and auditory examinations. The auditory examinations included brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) threshold and supra-threshold assessments using both click and 8 kHz tone burst stimuli. The absence of vestibular signs and effects on the BAEP attributable to the test solution suggested the test solution could be applied safely to dogs, including those with a damaged tympanic membrane

    The objective was to evaluate the factors associated with the prevalence of Otodectes cynotis infestations in dogs assisted at the Dermatology Service of the Veterinary Hospital, Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro. A total of 250 dogs were examined through direct smear of ear samples using a stereoscopic microscope, for the parasitological diagnostic. All dog owners were interviewed and data regarding the animals and their environments were individually recorded. Mite infestation was observed in 15 animals, with a prevalence of 6%. The variables were tested regarding their association with the mites, using the &#967;2 test and, when appropriate, the Fisher exact test. There were no evidences that age (p = 0,20), sex (p = 0,31), breed (p = 0,50), shape of ear (p = 0,66), type (p = 0,19) and length of hair (p = 0,14) and contact with other animals (p = 0,06) could act as potential risk factors for O. cynotis infestation. However, living environment (p = 0,03) and frequency of environmental cleaning (p = 0,005) may facilitate the infestation. The occurrence of pruritus was associated to the presence of mites (p<0,001), suggesting to be an effect of the parasitism.<br>O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os fatores associados à prevalência da infestação por Otodectes cynotis em cães atendidos no Setor de Dermatologia do Hospital Veterinário de Pequenos Animais, Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro. Foram atendidos 250 cães, sendo o diagnóstico feito através de visualização do ácaro, presente no cerumem coletado e examinado sob microscopia esterioscópica. Todos os proprietários dos cães foram entrevistados para preenchimento de fichas individuais com dados dos animais e do ambiente em que estes viviam. A infestação por O. cynotis foi observada em 15 animais, sendo a prevalência de 6%. A associação entre as variáveis e a presença dos ácaros foi testada através do &#967;2 e quando pertinente pelo teste de Fisher exato. Não houve evidências que permitissem concluir que a idade (p = 0,20), o sexo (p = 0,31), a raça (p = 0,50), o formato das orelhas (p = 0,66), o tipo (p = 0,19) e comprimento da pelagem (p = 0,14) e, o convívio com outros animais (p = 0,06) poderiam atuar como possíveis fatores de risco para a infestação. Entretanto, o ambiente em que viviam os animais (p = 0,03) e a freqüência de limpeza (p = 0,005) parecem propiciar a infestação. A ocorrência de prurido esteve associada à presença dos ácaros (p<0,001), sugerindo ser um efeito do parasitismo
