The Cattle-Prod and the Press: Mass Media Under the Terror
This investigation involves the doctrines of the military dictatorship which held de facto power in Argentina from 1976 to 1983, and the attempts on the part of a sector of the mass media, allied with the military, to transform these doctrines into a narrative form, performing a legitimating function for the regime. Generally, the theoretical concern here is with the interplay\ud
between an authoritarian ideology in search of dominance and its representation, or mythification, in a communications medium. As such, it must inevitably deal with the question of legitimacy and the methods by which it can be sought, and it must also address the questions of the construction of ideology and the reading of narrative in the service of ideology, which may be called propaganda. This thesis is concerned not only with the development and the content of an ideology, but also with its imagery and its strategy as they are realized through manipulation of the means of communication in a society.
