Assessment of the adhesive capacity of asphalt binders in the aggregate-binder bonds by means of new methodology
The main goal of this study is to present a new methodology to characterize the adhesive capacity (cohesion and adhesion capacity) of asphalt binders by means of new mechanical parameters. This methodology is based on the Fenix test, a test recently developed in Spain. This method assesses the cracking resistance of the asphalt mixtures, and it has been adapted to characterize the bonding power of asphalt binders. The main parameters achieved with this procedure are related to the energy dissipated during the breaking between the asphalt binder and the aggregate, when these materials are subjected to tensile stress; essential parameters related to the adhesive capacity of asphalt binders. The results of an experimental stage are presented in this research, in which the proposed methodology has been applied to analyse the behaviour of the binder in the aggregate-binder matrix according to temperature variation and the effect of water and ageing; taking into account aggregates of the same origin and with a different shape pattern. The results show that the parameters achieved from this new methodology allows characterizing the adhesive capacity of asphalt binders in the different conditions assessed.Postprint (published version
Effect of aggregate type on the fatigue durability of asphalt mixtures
The effect of aggregate type on the fatigue behaviour of asphalt mixtures is an important variable for ensuring greater durability of pavements over time. This study presents the main results of an assessment of the effect of the physical properties of different aggregates on the fatigue behaviour of asphalt mixtures. Two fatigue tests were used for this study, one standardized and another developed recently which evaluates dissipated energy during the cracking of asphalt mixtures (EBADE® test). Three types of aggregates were used and adjusted to a semi-dense aggregate gradation: two of fluvial type (AF1 and AF2) and one from a quarry (AC). Two different shredding processes were used to obtain the aggregates. The results obtained show that there is a strong relationship between the shape and texture of the fine aggregates and the fatigue behaviour of the mixtures. It was also showed that the greater the thickness of the mixture in the pavement structure, the more influence these properties have. Likewise, the shape and texture of the fine aggregate influence the ability of asphalt mixtures to dissipate energy during fatigue damage.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
DUSST: development of a new stress sweep fatigue test for asphalt mixtures
Fatigue cracking is one of the main damage mechanisms that take place in asphalt pavements. However, its evaluation during the design asphalt mixtures is not usually considered due to the complexity of the tests required, their high costs and the long time required to perform them. As a consequence, several research teams are working on developing new test procedures to reduce the time related to fatigue characterization of asphalt mixtures. In this context, this paper presents the development of a new test procedure consisting of a cyclic uniaxial tension-compression test in which the stress applied increases every 5000 cycles. In this manner, it is possible to evaluate a mixture’s response under cyclic loading at different stress levels in one test. Also, failure of the mixture takes place in a shorter time period than that required by classical time sweep fatigue tests. This paper presents results obtained in the application of this new methodology to a mixture frequently used in Chilean pavement structures (type IV-A-12 by Chilean standards) with three different asphalt binders: a conventional binder (CA-24), a high modulus binder (CA-HM) and a polymer-modified binder (CA-PM). We evaluated three different types of aggregates obtained through two different shredding processes. Results achieved in the development of our Direct Uniaxial Stress Sweep Test (DUSST) show that it is an experimental method with great potential. This test can characterize fatigue behaviors of asphalt mixtures in a shorter time by using important parameters such as initial strain, failure strain, complex modulus and dissipated energy. In addition, we obtained a good sensitivity of the DUSST main parameters to variables evaluated.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Experimental study of recycled asphalt mixtures with high percentages of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP)
This paper presents an experimental study to characterize the mechanical behaviour of bituminous mixtures containing high rates of RAP. Two semi-dense mixtures of 12 and 20 mm maximum aggregate size and containing 40 and 60% RAP, respectively (S-12 and S-20, in accordance with Spanish specifications), which were used for rehabilitation of a Spanish highway section, were evaluated. First, the effect of RAP variability on the recycled mixtures was analyzed. Their mechanical properties were then studied by determining the stiffness modulus and indirect tensile strength and applying a new direct tensile test, i.e. Fénix test, and the three-point bending beam test. Results show that high rates of recycled material can generally be incorporated into bituminous mixes by proper characterization and handling of RAP stockpiles.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Results of a study oriented to characterize and to determine the variability of the properties of the reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and hot recycled asphalt mixtures with high rates of RAP in their composition are presented. Three projects carried out in different Spanish provinces between the years 2004 and 2007 were selected, which ones used recycled mixtures with RAP rates between 40 and 60 %. On each RAP, variability in the storings around the asphalt content and the particle
size distribution was evaluated, whereas in
the recycled mixtures the same variables
were analyzed together with the volumetric
and mechanical properties obtained from Marshall’s tests applied to control the mixtures. In general, the results obtained indicate a high variability in the particle size distribution and asphalt content in the mixtures with high contents of RAP with respect to the conventional mixtures, and also the results obtained indicate that the homogenizing techniques used for the RAP and the division of RAP, previous to its use, allow to reduce considerably the variability in the particle size distribution and in the asphalt content of the recycled mixtures at high rates, and simultaneously, to register variability of its volumetric and mechanical properties similar to the conventional mixtures.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
False failure in flexural fatigue tests
Flexural fatigue tests are typically run under displacement or in a straincontrolled
mode. In these tests, either the oscillatory displacement amplitude or strain amplitude applied to the bottom of the specimen is kept constant. The evolution of loading
required to cause fatigue is then measured. Load amplitude decreases with the number of
cycles, and the specimen is considered to have failed when the load is half its initial value. This failure criterion may be erroneous when non-fragile fracture mixtures prepared with high bitumen contents or modified binders are tested. In these cases, mixtures exhibit a visco-plastic behaviour and increasingly less stress is necessary to cause strain without cracking. Mixtures
are hardly deteriorated when the fatigue failure is determined, and may be subjected to a larger number of load repetitions. It is then recommended to control the evolution of loading more effectively and regard as valid only tests where load decreases sharply to very low levels, making sure that the three stages in the fatigue process have occurred.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author’s final draft
Peer ReviewedPostprint (author’s final draft
