Atelocynus microtis is one of the least known species of carnivores in the world, known only from sporadic records throughout its distribution (Michalski 2010, Leite-Pitman & Williams 2011). It is distributed between Colombia and Bolivia and Ecuador, Peru and Brazil, with very few records and in relatively large time windows (Berta 1986, LeitePitman & Williams 2011).Atelocynus microtis es una de la especies menos conocidas de carnívoros en el mundo, conocido apenas de registros esporádicos a lo largo de su distribución (Michalski 2010, Leite-Pitman & Williams 2011). Consideraciones Epistemológicas para una Educación Inclusiva más oportuna: la necesidad de un nuevo paradigma epistémico

    Get PDF

The knowledge regarding the use of wild mammals in the upper part of the department of Córdoba is deficient, counting only on the work of RaceroCasarrubia where they mention the patterns and perceptions of wildlife use by indigenous communities of the upper San River basin Jorge. Therefore, this document presents first, the list of mammals of five paths (La Chica, El Diamante, Cañaveral Medio, El Venado - Divino Niño and Tolobá) located in the eastern sector of Cerro Murrucucú,El conocimiento referente al uso de los mamíferos silvestres en la parte alta del departamento de Córdoba es deficiente, contando solo con el trabajo de RaceroCasarrubia en donde mencionan los patrones y percepciones de uso de la fauna silvestre por comunidades indígenas de la cuenca alta del Río San Jorge. First record of Leishmaniasis in wild Jaguars (Panthera onca) from Mexico

Leishmaniasis is a vector-borne disease and parasitic zoonosis that occurs worldwide (i.e., Latin America, Africa and Eurasian countries; Desjeux 2005, Dahroug et al. 2010, 2011, Otranto et al. 2013). It is caused by parasitic kinetoplastids of the Leishmania genus transmitted by arthropod vectors (i.e. sandflies such as Lutzomyia spp.) and presents a great diversity of clinical profiles, depending on the affected areas (Otranto et al. 2013). This disease mainly affects humans and wild carnivoran species, mostly canids, with dogs as major reservoir hosts (Deane & Deane 1954, Silva et al. 2000, Figueiredo et al. 2008, Dantas-Torres et al. 2012). Even though domestic and wild felids are unusual reservoirs, and rarely develop the disease, several studies suggest that these species may play an important role in the epidemiology of the disease (Poli et al. 2002, Maia et al. 2008, Nasereddin et al. 2008, Dantas-Torres et al. 2012). Here we report the first record of a clinical manifestation of Leishmaniasis disease in a wild Jaguar (Panthera onca) in Quintana Roo, Mexico.Leishmaniasis is a vector-borne disease and parasitic zoonosis that occurs worldwide (i.e., Latin America, Africa and Eurasian countries; Desjeux 2005, Dahroug et al. 2010, 2011, Otranto et al. 2013). ESTRUCTURA POBLACIONAL Y PROPORCIÓN DE SEXOS DEL CAIMÁN (CAIMAN CROCODILUS) EN EL RÍO SIERPE, COSTA RICA

Knowledge of demographic aspects of caimans and crocodiles is a very important issue for their conservation. A study was carried out in the Sierpe River, in the South Pacific of Costa Rica, from July 2004 through March 2005, comprising both rainy and dry seasons. Nocturnal visual surveys were conducted using shining flashlights; all the individuals were captured, measured and sexed, using a four ranges classification. During the eight surveys, a total of 58 individuals were captured, 65.51% belonging to class II, and 31.03% to class III. Important human explotation has been documented for this population. Differences in male/female ratio and the capture numbers in the study area can be explained by the migration of individuals

Large mammals are a critical component of tropical ecosystems, especially for the tropics (Terborgh 1988, Cardillo et al. 2005). Nevertheless, is not until recently that with the emergence and widespread use of non-invasive techniques such as camera-traps, that we are getting a large amount ofinformation on medium and large-size mammal assemblages.

Is the Banana Ripe? Andean Bear–Human Conflict in a Protected Area of Colombia

The Andean bear (Tremarctos ornatus; bear) is endemic to the tropical Andes Mountains of South America. Previous assessments predict that bear populations will decline by \u3e30% in the next 30 years. The species may face the greatest threats within its historical distribution in Colombia where rapid agricultural expansion into natural habitats is increasing human–bear conflicts. Between April 2017 and March 2018, we studied bear feeding behavior on plantain (Musa sapientum) and banana (M. paradisiaca) crops within the Barbas-Bremen protected area in the central mountain range of Colombia to describe the magnitude of crop damage, economic losses, and spatial distribution of feeding sites where human–bear conflicts would most likely occur. We also identified all affected farmers and used structured interviews to determine their attitudes toward the bears and their conservation. We recorded 237 damaged plants and identified 57 bear feeding area locations on 9 farms. Bear damage consisted of bites to the trunk of each plant and consumption of the centers. The damage polygon covered 198 ha, and it was located in the northwestern portion of the protected area. Although we estimated that the magnitude of crop consumption by bears and social and economic dimensions of damage caused by the species in Colombia. Our research also provides insights on how human–bear conflicts may be mitigated in the study area
