Market imperfections and income concentration: global and regional perspectives on Brazilian agricultural production performance.

We measure performance for the Brazilian agriculture by means of free disposal hull (FDH) measures of technical efficiency. Measurements are conditional on contextual variables that may be responsible for market imperfection variables. The production frontier is generated by a product probability measure. Production observations are aggre gated by county and analyzed by region. The efficiency measure is output oriented and assumes variable returns to scale. Output is rural gross income and inputs are land expenses, labor expenses and expenses on other technological inputs. The covariates for production are credit, technical assistance, social, environmental, and demographic indicators and income concentration, measured by the Gini index. Overall Brazilian rural production performance responds favorably to credit, income concentration and environment score and unfavorably to technical assistance, at the 95% level. Results differ by region. Agricultural public policies envisaging inclusion of small farmers into the main stream of production should be regionally oriented

Mercado de leite: uma análise dos preços recebidos pelos produtores nos últimos anos.

A dinâmica do setor leiteiro nos últimos anos, principalmente a partir dos anos 90, tem sido motivo de vários estudos. Entre outras constatações, esses estudos apontam para o crescimento da oferta de leite, decorrente de expressivas taxas de crescimento na produção interna, via um contínuo incremento da produtividade, e também das substanciais importações que foram realizadas. Em relação ao preço do leite, observa-se uma queda persistente ao longo das últimas três décadas, documentada por Barros e Rizzieri (2001), Yamaguchi (2001) e Gomes, S. (2002). O objetivo deste trabalho é descrever e discutir o comportamento do preço recebido pelos produtores de leite após a implantação do Plano Real, cobrindo o período compreendido entre janeiro de 1995 até fevereiro de 2004

Algumas características da oferta do leite.

O objetivo do trabalho é estimar a curva de oferta de leite, utilizando dados do período 1970-2001. O modelo estimado possibilita examinar a principal conclusão das comissões de inquérito de algumas assembléias estaduais, pela qual a queda anormal observada no preço do leite, na entressafra de 2001, foi atribuída ao poder de oligopsônio das firmas que processam o leite. Ainda mais, os consumidores não se beneficiaram dos preços baixos em nível de produtor. Assim, a margem de comercialização sofreu, por aquela visão, considerável acréscimo.Na publicação: Eliseu Alves

Stochastic frontier approach to agricultural production including technical effects: the brazilian agricultural censures of 1995-1996 and 2006.

In this paper we analyze the impact of Embrapa’s research on the technical efficiencies of Brazilian farmers, particularly the poor. Using a stochastic frontier approach, we estimate a production function to obtain not only the technica efficiencies but also the elasticities of the key inputs. Our results indicate that Embrapa has generally had a positive effect on technical efficiencies, but there are still challenges ahead for Embrapa. Key among these challenges is the dissemination of its technology, which seems to be predominantly adopted by wealthier farmers. The low or absent use of modern inputs by poor farmers is highly detrimental of their ability to succeed

Assessing the determinants of rural income dispersion in Brazil.

This article has as its objective the analysis of rural income dispersion in Brazil. To this en we fit econometric regression models using the Gini index as the dependent variable, tecnology, and environmental, social and demographic indices as independent variables. The analysis is performed on a regional basis. The statistical approach uses fractional regression and generalized method of moments 9GMM) The tecnological variable crystallizes the production process uses county data collected from the Brazilian agricultural census of 2006. Tecnology is significant and dominates the relationship in all regions. The other covariates vary in regional intensity

On spin-1 massive particles coupled to a Chern-Simons field

We study spin one particles interacting through a Chern-Simons field. In the Born approximation, we calculate the two body scattering amplitude considering three possible ways to introduce the interaction: (a) a Proca like model minimally coupled to a Chern-Simons field, (b) the model obtained from (a) by replacing the Proca's mass by a Chern-Simons term and (c) a complex Maxwell-Chern-Simons model minimally coupled to a Chern-Simons field. In the low energy regime the results show similarities with the Aharonov-Bohm scattering for spin 1/2 particles. We discuss the one loop renormalization program for the Proca's model. In spite of the bad ultraviolet behavior of the matter field propagator, we show that, up to one loop the model is power counting renormalizable thanks to the Ward identities satisfied by the interaction vertices.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, revte

Triplite-zwieselite, fluorapatite and isokite evolution products from the Sítio do Castelo mine at Folgosinho, Guarda

A mina Sítio do Castelo explorou em meados dos anos 70 uma importante massa quartzosa na proximidade da povoação de Folgosinho. Os trabalhos a céu aberto bem como as diversas galerias expuseram corpos fosfáticos intensamente oxidados, onde foi possível observar uma grande variedade de fosfatos secundários. O reconhecimento de vários corpos fosfáticos permitiu definir dois tipos de ocorrências: 1- Triplite – zwieselite como único fosfato primário; 2- Triplite - zwieselite em associação com fluorapatite e isokite. A alteração destes fosfatos em combinação com sulfuretos (esfalerite, arsenopirite e calcopirite) resulta em diferentes associações paragenéticas, as quais servem de argumento para a proposta das linhagens evolutivas que lhes correspondem.In the mid 70's, the ‘Sitio do Castelo’ mine has exploited an important lens of quartz near the village of Folgosinho. The open pit, as well as the several galleries, has exposed intensely oxidized phosphatic bodies, where it was possible to observe a wide variety of secondary phosphates. The recognition of several phosphatic bodies allowed definig two types of occurences: 1- Triplite - zwieselite phosphate as the sole primary phosphate; 2- Triplite - Zwieselite in association with fluorapatite and isokite. The weathering of these phosphates in combination with several sulphide minerals (sphalerite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite) resulted in different paragenetic associations, which serve as argument for the proposed evolutionary paths.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia com fundos nacionai

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar aspectos relacionados à produção e ao crescimento vegetativo da cultivar Thompson Seedless, bem como características e composição química dos frutos, sob a influência de cinco diferentes porta-enxertos (IAC 766, Couderc 1613, Harmony, Paulsen 1103 e 420A), nas condições do Vale do São Francisco, a fim de recomendar uma cultivar porta-enxerto que tenha afinidade com a variedade copa estudada

Normative framework of Brazilian Extractive Reserves: a social construction of an environmental legal protection

Este artigo analisa o marco legal das Reservas Extrativistas brasileiras. O seu objetivo é apresentar um panorama das principais normas jurídicas relativas a essa unidade de conservação – unidade que se distingue das demais previstas no Sistema Nacional de Unidades de Conservação da Natureza (SNUC). O estudo adota uma perspectiva cronológica, de 1987, quando foi editada a portaria que criou a modelagem de Projeto de Assentamento Extrativista (PAE), até 2018, quando foi editada a Portaria Conjunta nº 96/2018, que institui a Comissão das Reservas Extrativistas Federais (CONAREX), órgão responsável pela elaboração da minuta de um novo decreto de regulamentação das Reservas Extrativistas. Ao longo do texto pretende-se demonstrar a insuficiência do atual marco legal e a necessidade de uma nova regulação para proteger mais efetivamente os meios de vida e a cultura da população extrativista tradicional.This article analyzes the legal framework of the Brazilian Extractive Reserves. Its purpose is to present a picture of the main legal rules provided for the regulation of the Extractive Reserves, which are consistently different from those provided for other conservation units in the Brazilian National System of Nature Conservation Units (SNUC). This study adopts a chronological perspective, starting from 1987, when the regulation that created the model of the extractive settlement project was edited, to 2018, when the Ordinance No. 96/2018 was edited to establish the Extractive Reserves Committee (CONAREX), an organ which is in charge of drafting a new regulation on Extractive Reserves. This article sought to demonstrate the insufficiency of the current legal framework and the necessity of a new regulation to protect more effectively the means of life and the culture of the traditional extractive people
