The International Symposium “The BRIC countries: Brazil, an emerging power” took place on 7 and 8 April 2011 and attracted over 150 participants from Europe and Latin America. The event was held at the Centre for Brazilian Studies in Salamanca, Spain, and was co-organised by the Ibero-American Institute (Instituto IberoAmericano) of the University of Salamanca and by the Latin-American Institute (Instituto de Latino-América) of the Academy of Sciences in Russia, as part of the network of the European Council for Social Research on Latin America (CEISAL), which includes 50 European institutions involved in Latin-American studies

#YouNeverToldMe: What Jewish American Children Learn about Palestinian Displacement during the founding of the State of Israel examines how the education of Jewish American children in Jewish educational K-12 settings about the founding of the state of Israel omits details and events about the displacement of Palestinians and how knowledge gaps limit the possibility of dialogue among Jewish and Arab/Palestinian college students, and have a negative effect on Jewish identity. Within the methodological structure of Grounded Theory young adults, former students of the researcher, answer questions concerning their memories of what they learned about the founding of the state of Israel, their experiences in college interacting with Palestinians, and the impact on their Jewish identity. When Jewish college students are confronted with the fact that they were given a limited view of the history of the founding of the state of Israel and learn that injustices were committed in that long running conflict they question the value of their Jewish education and question their Jewish identity and their connection to the state of Israel. The data collected confirms that a gap in knowledge not only affects Jewish young adults’ self image, it affects their view of the state of Israel, and encourages them to find ways to get to know Palestinians and to support peaceful pathways to further justice and respect, key Jewish values that they learned as children growing up in Jewish settings

China's tianxia and foreign policy in the pandemic context

The Covid-19 pandemic as a global threat has made it possible to gain a dynamic perspective on the behavior of States, and some light on the new international scenario. In this context, it has become clear that People's Republic of China (PRC) and the West are competitors in more than one area, and that it will be necessary to cooperate with the Asian giant for global stability/balance. In this article, we propose a retrospective (historical) look at the centralized State of China, and then characterize the current regime in that country . In the context of Chinese theories of International Relations, we propose to develop the concept of tianxia as a guide for the definition of a political strategy, considering the criticisms and limitations to the application of that same concept. Still in the pandemic context, we propose a reading of the political actions taken by the Chinese regime. The study of tianxia, whatever international scenario is set, may help us to understand some of the historical foundations of what PRC is today

Os portugueses na Venezuela

A seguir ao Brasil (com aproximadamente 700 mil pessoas), a Venezuela é o segundo país da América Latina com maior número de portugueses, calculando-se que sejam cerca de 500 mil. Dessa população, 75 por cento é natural da Região Autónoma da Madeira – número considerável tendo em atenção o somatório de habitantes residentes na ilha que é de aproximadamente 245 011 pessoas (censo de 2001) – havendo ainda alguns contingentes oriundos do Porto, dos distritos de Coimbra e de Aveiro

Portugal e o projecto da Comunidade Ibero-Americana de Nações

Existe a ideia de que Portugal não tem uma politica para a América Latina e que o compromisso português com as Cimeiras Ibero-Americana é limitado, que Lisboa dá prioridade a sua relação com a Europa, com as suas ex-colónias de África e Ásia, e na América, o seu vínculo prioritário é com o Brasil. Se olharmos para os números, evidenciamos que nenhum país da América Latina surge ainda entre os 10 principais mercados das exportações portuguesas e os fundos que os distintos governos portugueses têm destinado aos países da região, receptores de APD, são muito pequenos em relação aos que destina a suas áreas de maior relevância estratégica. Mas esta ideia poderá mudar se considerarmos, a partir de agora, que a inserção de Portugal no quadro Ibero-Americano tem vindo a acentuar-se, quer através da participação nacional ao mais alto nível nas Cimeiras de Chefes de Estado e de Governos, quer através da integração em organismos sectoriais. Portugal é já o terceiro fi nanciador da CoIBA, a seguir a Espanha e ao México, e actualmente são várias as entidades portuguesas comprometidas com os distintos Programas, Iniciativas e Projectos Ibero-Americanos, como o Ministério da Cultura, o Instituto dos Museus e da Conservação, a Associação Portuguesa de Editores e Livreiros, a Direcção Geral do Livro e das Bibliotecas, a Direcção Geral do Arquivo Histórico Diplomático, o Ministério de Educação, o Ministério do Trabalho e da Solidariedade Social, o Ministério Ciência e Tecnologia e Ensino Superior, a Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, etc. Observar a evolução do projecto Ibero-Americano e do compromisso de Portugal com a região permitir-nos-á num primeiro momento, compreender o sentido das afi rmações dos últimos governos quanto à prioridade da região na política externa portuguesa de hoje. Identifi car os novos cenários e as principais motivações e conteúdos da “nova” politica Ibero-Americana portuguesa poderá ajudar-nos a caracterizá-la e perspectivar eventuais desenvolvimentos
