Complete Fusion Enhancement and Suppression of Weakly Bound Nuclei at Near Barrier Energies
We consider the influence of breakup channels on the complete fusion of
weakly bound systems in terms of dynamic polarization potentials. It is argued
that the enhancement of the cross section at sub-barrier energies may be
consistent with recent experimental observations that nucleon transfer, often
leading to breakup, is dominant compared to direct breakup. The main trends of
the experimental complete fusion cross section for Li + Bi are
analyzed in the framework of the DPP approach.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure
Supersymmetric Extension of the Quantum Spherical Model
In this work, we present a supersymmetric extension of the quantum spherical
model, both in components and also in the superspace formalisms. We find the
solution for short/long range interactions through the imaginary time formalism
path integral approach. The existence of critical points (classical and
quantum) is analyzed and the corresponding critical dimensions are determined.Comment: 21 pages, fixed notation to match published versio
Structural properties of crumpled cream layers
The cream layer is a complex heterogeneous material of biological origin
which forms spontaneously at the air-milk interface. Here, it is studied the
crumpling of a single cream layer packing under its own weight at room
temperature in three-dimensional space. The structure obtained in these
circumstances has low volume fraction and anomalous fractal dimensions. Direct
means and noninvasive NMR imaging technique are used to investigate the
internal and external structure of these systems.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, accepted in J. Phys. D: Appl. Phy
Mass generation for non-Abelian antisymmetric tensor fields in a three-dimensional space-time
Starting from a recently proposed Abelian topological model in (2+1)
dimensions, which involve the Kalb-Ramond two form field, we study a
non-Abelian generalization of the model. An obstruction for generalization is
detected. However we show that the goal is achieved if we introduce a vectorial
auxiliary field. Consequently, a model is proposed, exhibiting a non-Abelian
topological mass generation mechanism in D=3, that provides mass for the
Kalb-Ramond field. The covariant quantization of this model requires ghosts for
ghosts. Therefore in order to quantize the theory we construct a complete set
of BRST and anti-BRST equations using the horizontality condition.Comment: 8 pages. To appear in Physical Review
Cancer cells migration: a laser scanning confocal microscopy study
Introduction: Nowadays, everyone or almost everyone has seen a love one lose the “battle” against cancer. Even worth than that is to closely watch the pain and agony that current anti-cancer therapies cause to the patient, with a known outcome...
Typical cancer therapies target the inhibition of the epidermal growth factor receptor, EGFR, a membrane receptor that plays a key role in regulating normal cellular processes such as cell survival, proliferation and migration. High expression of EGFR is generally associated with invasion, metastasis, late- stage disease, chemotherapy resistance, hormonal therapy resistance and poor general therapeutic outcome.
In order to develop new approaches for cancer treatment it is necessary to understand it is necessary to study the morphology of cancer cells when exposed to different stimuli. As in the case of this study human cancer lung cells were stimulated with EGF and its behavior was monitored over time using Laser scanning confocal microscope (Zeiss; LSM780).
Results: A set of human cancer lung cells were stimulated with its ligand EGF and another set of human cancer lung cells were not stimulated. The morphological changes were followed

over time using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) with time elapse.
As it can be seen on figure 1 the cancer cells morphology did significantly changed its phenotype. On the other hand when these cells were stimulated the morphological changes were significant as it can be seen on figure 2.
The addition of EGF to the culture medium induce significant morphological changes, namely of loss of cell-cell junctions (b), formation of filipodia (b) and tissue disaggregation (c).
Additionally, 3D reconstructions of singles cells were performed which allowed the confirmation of the internalization the EGFR dimers (data not shown).
With time elapse laser scanning confocal microscopy it was
possible to follow of the events that lead to cell migration, loss of cell-cell junction, filipodia formation and migration in real time
