    High precision motion control of parallel robots with imperfections and manufacturing tolerances

    This work attempts to achieve precise motion control using parallel robots with manufacturing tolerances and inaccuracies by migrating the measurements from their joint space to task space in order to decrease control system’s sensitivity to any kinematical uncertainty rather than calibrating the parallel plant. The problem of dynamical model uncertainties and its effect on the derivation of the control law is also addressed in this work through disturbance estimation and compensation. Eventually, both task space measurement and disturbance estimation are combined to formulate a control framework that is unsensitive to either kinematical and dynamical system uncertainties

    Little-Parks effect in a superconducting loop with magnetic dot

    We have studied the nucleation of superconductivity in a mesoscopic Al loop, enclosing magnetic dot with perpendicular magnetization. The superconducting phase boundary Tc(B), determined from transport measurements, is asymmetric with respect to the polarity of an applied magnetic field. The maximum critical temperature has been found for a finite applied magnetic field, which is antiparallel to the magnetization of the dot. Theoretical phase boundary shows a good agreement with the experimental data.Comment: to be published in Phys. Rev. B - Brief Report

    Biological efficacy of the ecotoxically favourable insecticides and their mixture in the control of gypsy moth

    Forest certification is one of the ways of adapting forestry to modern ideas of “sustainable management“, by meeting demands of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standard. By joining this process, Serbia obligated to follow FSC pesticides policy. Almost all insecticides registered in Serbia and applied for control of the most dangerous outbreaking defoliating species in forests, are on the list of prohibited ones. In certificated forest ecosystems in Serbia, microbiological insecticides (active ingredient: Spores and protein-crystals of the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis ssp. kurstaki) are most widely used pesticides for the control of one of the most important economically harmful defoliators – gypsy moths, in progragation phase, when the number of pests is relatively small. When the number is greater, it is assumed that the so-called “soft“ ecotoxicologically favourable preparations Avaunt®, Alverde®, Coragen®, registered for application in agriculture, but not in forestry can be used for inhibition of multiplication. Studies of biological efficacy of the aforementioned preparations and their mixtures with biological insecticide Foray® showed that they have preconditions for application in forest ecosystems. The high biologic efficacy, mechanism of action, resistance to water rinsing, high selectivity, and small quantities of application, anticipated a bright future for them. Since results of researches of biological efficacy of insecticides in laboratory and field conditions are statistically different, studies done in natural conditions should be favored.Key words: Insecticides, gypsy moth larvae, efficacy, validity of different research methods

    Uniaxial and biaxial soft deformations of nematic elastomers

    We give a geometric interpretation of the soft elastic deformation modes of nematic elastomers, with explicit examples, for both uniaxial and biaxial nematic order. We show the importance of body rotations in this non-classical elasticity and how the invariance under rotations of the reference and target states gives soft elasticity (the Golubovic and Lubensky theorem). The role of rotations makes the Polar Decomposition Theorem vital for decomposing general deformations into body rotations and symmetric strains. The role of the square roots of tensors is discussed in this context and that of finding explicit forms for soft deformations (the approach of Olmsted).Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, RevTex, AmsTe

    Optimal motion control and vibration suppression of flexible systems with inaccessible outputs

    This work addresses the optimal control problem of dynamical systems with inaccessible outputs. A case in which dynamical system outputs cannot be measured or inaccessible. This contradicts with the nature of the optimal controllers which can be considered without any loss of generality as state feedback control laws for systems with linear dynamics. Therefore, this work attempts to estimate dynamical system states through a novel state observer that does not require injecting the dynamical system outputs onto the observer structure during its design. A linear quadratic optimal control law is then realized based on the estimated states which allows controlling motion along with active vibration suppression of this class of dynamical systems with inaccessible outputs. Validity of the proposed control framework is evaluated experimentally

    Aerobic capacity and respiratory patterns are better in recreational basketball-engaged university students than age-matched untrained males

    Study aim: To asses and compare the aerobic capacity and respiratory parameters in recreational basketball-engaged university students with age-matched untrained young adults. Material and methods: A total of 30 subjects were selected to took part in the study based on recreational-basketball activity level and were assigned to a basketball (BG: N = 15, age 22.86 ± 1.35 yrs., body height 185.07 ± 5.95 cm, body weight 81.21 ± 6.15 kg) and untrained group (UG: N = 15, age 22.60 ± 1.50 yrs., body height 181.53 ± 6.11 cm, body weight 76.89 ± 7.30 kg). Inspiratory vital capacity (IVC), forced expiration volume (FEV1), FEV1/IVC ratio, maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max), ventilatory threshold (VO2VT) and time to exhaustion, were measured in all subjects. Student T-test for independent Sample and Cohen's d as the measure of the effect size were calculated. Results: Recreational basketball-engaged students (EG) reached significantly greater IVC (t = 7.240, p < 0.001, d = 1.854), FEV1 (t = 10.852, p < 0.001, d = 2.834), FEV1/IVC ratio (t = 6.370, p < 0.001, d = 3.920), maximal oxygen consumption (t = 9.039, p < 0.001, d = 3.310), ventilatory threshold (t = 9.859, p < 0.001, d = 3.607) and time to exhaustion (t = 12.361, p < 0.001, d = 4.515) compared to UG. Conclusions: Long-term exposure to recreational basketball leads to adaptive changes in aerobic and respiratory parameters in male university students

    Interface roughening with nonlinear surface tension

    Using stability arguments, this Brief Report suggests that a term that enhances the surface tension in the presence of large height fluctuations should be included in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation. A one-loop renormalization group analysis then shows for interface dimensions larger than 3.3\simeq 3.3 an unstable strong-coupling fixed point that enters the system from infinity. The relevance of these results to the roughening transition is discussed.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX, 1 figur

    Particle currents and the distribution of terrace sizes in unstable epitaxial growth

    A solid-on-solid model of epitaxial growth in 1+1 dimensions is investigated in which slope dependent upward and downward particle currents compete on the surface. The microscopic mechanisms which give rise to these currents are the smoothening incorporation of particles upon deposition and an Ehrlich-Schwoebel barrier which hinders inter-layer transport at step edges. We calculate the distribution of terrace sizes and the resulting currents on a stepped surface with a given inclination angle. The cancellation of the competing effects leads to the selection of a stable magic slope. Simulation results are in very good agreement with the theoretical findings.Comment: 4 pages, including 3 figure
