Complete classification of stationary flows with constant total pressure of ideal incompressible infinitely conducting fluid
The exhaustive classification of stationary incompressible flows with
constant total pressure of ideal infinitely electrically conducting fluid is
given. By introduction of curvilinear coordinates based on streamlines and
magnetic lines of the flow the system of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations
is reduced to a nonlinear vector wave equation extended by the
incompressibility condition in a form of a generalized Cauchy integral. For
flows with constant total pressure the wave equation is explicitly integrated,
whereas the incompressibility condition is reduced to a scalar equation for
functions, depending on different sets of variables. The central difficulty of
the investigation is the separation of variables in the scalar equation, and
integration of the resulting overdetermined systems of nonlinear partially
differential equations. The canonical representatives of all possible types of
solutions together with equivalence transformations, that extend the canonical
set to the whole amount of solutions are represented
Spray nozzle designs for agricultural aviation applications
Techniques of generating monodisperse sprays and information concerning chemical liquids used in agricultural aviation are surveyed. The periodic dispersion of liquid jet, the spinning disk method, and ultrasonic atomization are the techniques discussed. Conceptually designed spray nozzles for generating monodisperse sprays are assessed. These are based on the classification of the drops using centrifugal force, on using two opposing liquid laden air jets, and on operating a spinning disk at an overloaded flow. Performance requirements for the designs are described and estimates of the operational characteristics are presented
Study of timing performance of Silicon Photomultiplier and application for a Cherenkov detector
Silicon photomultipliers are very versatile photo detectors due to their high
photon detection efficiency, fast response, single photon counting capability,
high amplification, and their insensitivity to magnetic fields. At our
institute we are studying the performance of these photo detectors at various
operating conditions. On the basis of the experience in the laboratory we built
a prototype of a timing Cherenkov detector consisting of a quartz radiator with
two mm MPPCs S10362-33-100C from Hamamatsu Photonics as
photodetectors. The MPPC sensors were operated with Peltier cooling to minimize
thermal noise and to avoid gain drifts. The test measurements at the DANE
Beam-Test Facility (BTF) at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati (LNF) with
pulsed 490 MeV electrons and the results on timing performance with Cherenkov
photons are presented.Comment: Conference proceedings of 12th Vienna Conference on Instrumentation

Long-term operation of a multi-channel cosmic muon system based on scintillation counters with MRS APD light readout
A Cosmic Ray Test Facility (CRTF) is the first large-scale implementation of
a scintillation triggering system based on a new scintillation technique known
as START. In START, the scintillation light is collected and transported by WLS
optical fibers, while light detection is performed by pairs of avalanche
photodiodes with the Metal-Resistor-Semiconductor structure operated in the
Geiger mode (MRS APD). START delivers 100% efficiency of cosmic muon detection,
while its intrinsic noise level is less than 10^{-2} Hz. CRTF, consisting of
160 START channels, has been continuously operated by the ALICE TOF
collaboration for more than 25 000 hours, and has demonstrated a high level of
stability. Fewer than 10% of MRS APDs had to be replaced during this period.Comment: Proceedings of NDIP-2008. 8 pages, 8 figures, 6 reference
Scintillation counter with MRS APD light readout
START, a high-efficiency and low-noise scintillation detector for ionizing
particles, was developed for the purpose of creating a high-granular system for
triggering cosmic muons. Scintillation light in START is detected by MRS APDs
(Avalanche Photo-Diodes with Metal-Resistance-Semiconductor structure),
operated in the Geiger mode, which have 1 mm^2 sensitive areas. START is
assembled from a 15 x 15 x 1 cm^3 scintillating plastic plate, two MRS APDs and
two pieces of wavelength-shifting optical fiber stacked in circular coils
inside the plastic. The front-end electronic card is mounted directly on the
detector. Tests with START have confirmed its operational consistency, over 99%
efficiency of MIP registration and good homogeneity. START demonstrates a low
intrinsic noise of about 10^{-2} Hz. If these detectors are to be
mass-produced, the cost of a mosaic array of STARTs is estimated at a moderate
level of 2-3 kUSD/m^2.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
