An Optimal Algorithm for Tiling the Plane with a Translated Polyomino
We give a -time algorithm for determining whether translations of a
polyomino with edges can tile the plane. The algorithm is also a
-time algorithm for enumerating all such tilings that are also regular,

Web-based Assessment of Visual and Visuospatial Symptoms in Parkinson\u27s Disease
Visual and visuospatial dysfunction is prevalent in Parkinson’s disease (PD). To promote assessment of these often overlooked symptoms, we adapted the PD Vision Questionnaire for Internet administration. The questionnaire evaluates visual and visuospatial symptoms, impairments in activities of daily living (ADLs), and motor symptoms. PD participants of mild to moderate motor severity (n = 24) and healthy control participants (HC, n = 23) completed the questionnaire in paper and web-based formats. Reliability was assessed by comparing responses across formats. Construct validity was evaluated by reference to performance on measures of vision, visuospatial cognition, ADLs, and motor symptoms. The web-based format showed excellent reliability with respect to the paper format for both groups (all P_s \u3c 0.001; HC completing the visual and visuospatial section only). Demonstrating the construct validity of the web-based questionnaire, self-rated ADL and visual and visuospatial functioning were significantly associated with performance on objective measures of these abilities (all P_s \u3c 0.01). The findings indicate that web-based administration may be a reliable and valid method of assessing visual and visuospatial and ADL functioning in PD
Proportion Regulation in Globally Coupled Nonlinear Systems
As a model of proportion regulation in differentiation process of biological
system, globally coupled activator-inhibitor systems are studied. Formation and
destabilization of one and two cluster state are predicted analytically.
Numerical simulations show that the proportion of units of clusters is chosen

Effects of lateral diffusion on morphology and dynamics of a microscopic lattice-gas model of pulsed electrodeposition
The influence of nearest-neighbor diffusion on the decay of a metastable
low-coverage phase (monolayer adsorption) in a square lattice-gas model of
electrochemical metal deposition is investigated by kinetic Monte Carlo
simulations. The phase-transformation dynamics are compared to the
well-established Kolmogorov-Johnson-Mehl-Avrami theory. The phase
transformation is accelerated by diffusion, but remains in accord with the
theory for continuous nucleation up to moderate diffusion rates. At very high
diffusion rates the phase-transformation kinetic shows a crossover to
instantaneous nucleation. Then, the probability of medium-sized clusters is
reduced in favor of large clusters. Upon reversal of the supersaturation, the
adsorbate desorbs, but large clusters still tend to grow during the initial
stages of desorption. Calculation of the free energy of subcritical clusters by
enumeration of lattice animals yields a quasi-equilibrium distribution which is
in reasonable agreement with the simulation results. This is an improvement
relative to classical droplet theory, which fails to describe the
distributions, since the macroscopic surface tension is a bad approximation for

Phase conjugate fluorozirconate fibre laser operating at 800nm
We report phase-conjugate feedback into a fluorozirconate optical fiber amplifier at infrared wavelengths. By using a semiconductor laser diode at 807 nm, a grating is established in photorefractive BaTiO3 that, in the ring configuration, provides feedback into the amplifier necessary for laser action. Once written, the grating is self-sustaining, and lasing is observed even after the laser diode is removed
Codes over Hurwitz integers
In this study, we obtain new classes of linear codes over Hurwitz integers
equipped with a new metric. We refer to the metric as Hurwitz metric. The codes
with respect to Hurwitz metric use in coded modu- lation schemes based on
quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM)-type constellations, for which neither
Hamming metric nor Lee metric. Also, we define decoding algorithms for these
codes when up to two coordinates of a transmitted code vector are effected by
error of arbitrary Hurwitz weight.Comment: 11 page
On the structure of non-full-rank perfect codes
The Krotov combining construction of perfect 1-error-correcting binary codes
from 2000 and a theorem of Heden saying that every non-full-rank perfect
1-error-correcting binary code can be constructed by this combining
construction is generalized to the -ary case. Simply, every non-full-rank
perfect code is the union of a well-defined family of -components
, where belongs to an "outer" perfect code , and these
components are at distance three from each other. Components from distinct
codes can thus freely be combined to obtain new perfect codes. The Phelps
general product construction of perfect binary code from 1984 is generalized to
obtain -components, and new lower bounds on the number of perfect

Temporal decorrelation of collective oscillations in neural networks with local inhibition and long-range excitation
We consider two neuronal networks coupled by long-range excitatory
interactions. Oscillations in the gamma frequency band are generated within
each network by local inhibition. When long-range excitation is weak, these
oscillations phase-lock with a phase-shift dependent on the strength of local
inhibition. Increasing the strength of long-range excitation induces a
transition to chaos via period-doubling or quasi-periodic scenarios. In the
chaotic regime oscillatory activity undergoes fast temporal decorrelation. The
generality of these dynamical properties is assessed in firing-rate models as
