    Color Magnetic Corrections to Quark Model Valence Distributions

    We calculate order αs\alpha_s color magnetic corrections to the valence quark distributions of the proton using the Los Alamos Model Potential wavefunctions. The spin-spin interaction breaks the model SU(4) symmetry, providing a natural mechanism for the difference between the up and down distributions. For a value of αs\alpha_s sufficient to produce the N−ΔN-\Delta mass splitting, we find up and down quark distributions in reasonable agreement with experiment.Comment: 25 Pages, LA-UR-93-132

    Effects of Extreme Obliquity Variations on the Habitability of Exoplanets

    We explore the impact of obliquity variations on planetary habitability in hypothetical systems with high mutual inclination. We show that large amplitude, high frequency obliquity oscillations on Earth-like exoplanets can suppress the ice-albedo feedback, increasing the outer edge of the habitable zone. We restrict our exploration to hypothetical systems consisting of a solar-mass star, an Earth-mass planet at 1 AU, and 1 or 2 larger planets. We verify that these systems are stable for 10810^8 years with N-body simulations, and calculate the obliquity variations induced by the orbital evolution of the Earth-mass planet and a torque from the host star. We run a simplified energy balance model on the terrestrial planet to assess surface temperature and ice coverage on the planet's surface, and we calculate differences in the outer edge of the habitable zone for planets with rapid obliquity variations. For each hypothetical system, we calculate the outer edge of habitability for two conditions: 1) the full evolution of the planetary spin and orbit, and 2) the eccentricity and obliquity fixed at their average values. We recover previous results that higher values of fixed obliquity and eccentricity expand the habitable zone, but also find that obliquity oscillations further expand habitable orbits in all cases. Terrestrial planets near the outer edge of the habitable zone may be more likely to support life in systems that induce rapid obliquity oscillations as opposed to fixed-spin planets.     1995 atmospheric trace molecule spectroscopy (ATMOS) linelist

    The Atmospheric Trace Molecule Spectroscopy (ATMOS) experiment uses a Fourier-transform spectrometer on board the Space Shuttle to record infrared solar occultation spectra of the atmosphere at 0.01-cm^(-1) resolution. The current version of the molecular spectroscopic database used for the analysis of the data obtained during three Space Shuttle missions between 1992 and 1994 is described. It is an extension of the effort first described by Brown et al. [Appl. Opt. 26, 5154 (1987)] to maintain an up-to-date database for the ATMOS experiment. The three-part ATMOS compilation contains Line parameters of 49 molecular species between 0 and 10000 cm^(-1), The main list, with nearly 700,000 entries, is an updated version of the HITRAN 1992 database. The second compilation contains supplemental line parameters, and the third set consists of absorption cross sections to represent the unresolvable features of heavy molecules. The differences between the ATMOS database and other public compilations are discussed

    Charmed Mesons Have No Discernable Color-Coulomb Attraction

    Starting with a confining linear Lorentz scalar potential V_s and a Lorentz vector potential V_v which is also linear but has in addition a color-Coulomb attraction piece, -alpha_s/r, we solve the Dirac equation for the ground-state c- and u-quark wave functions. Then, convolving V_v with the u-quark density, we find that the Coulomb attraction mostly disappears, making an essentially linear barV_v for the c-quark. A similar convolution using the c-quark density also leads to an essentially linear tildeV_v for the u-quark. For bound cbar-c charmonia, where one must solve using a reduced mass for the c-quarks, we also find an essentially linear widehatV_v. Thus, the relativistic quark model describes how the charmed-meson mass spectrum avoids the need for a color-Coulomb attraction.Comment: 9 pages, 5 PDF figure

    Geometry and observables in (2+1)-gravity

    We review the geometrical properties of vacuum spacetimes in (2+1)-gravity with vanishing cosmological constant. We explain how these spacetimes are characterised as quotients of their universal cover by holonomies. We explain how this description can be used to clarify the geometrical interpretation of the fundamental physical variables of the theory, holonomies and Wilson loops. In particular, we discuss the role of Wilson loop observables as the generators of the two fundamental transformations that change the geometry of (2+1)-spacetimes, grafting and earthquake.     Optically induced spin to charge transduction in donor spin read-out

    The proposed read-out configuration D+D- for the Kane Si:P architecture[Nature 393, 133 (1998)] depends on spin-dependent electron tunneling between donors, induced adiabatically by surface gates. However, previous work has shown that since the doubly occupied donor state is so shallow the dwell-time of the read-out state is less than the required time for measurement using a single electron transistor (SET). We propose and analyse single-spin read-out using optically induced spin to charge transduction, and show that the top gate biases, required for qubit selection, are significantly less than those demanded by the Kane scheme, thereby increasing the D+D- lifetime.     The fractional parentage expansion method is extended from SU(2)fSU(2)_{f} nonrelativistic to SU(3)fSU(3)_{f} and relativistic dibaryon calculations. A transformation table between physical bases and symmetry bases for the SU(3)fSU(3)_{f} dibaryon is provided.
