The Delocalized Effective Degrees of Freedom of a Black Hole at Low Frequencies
Identifying the fundamental degrees of freedom of a black hole poses a
long-standing puzzle. In hep-th/0511133 Goldberger and Rothstein forwarded a
theory of the low frequency degrees of freedom within the effective field
theory approach, where they are relevancy-ordered but of unclear physical
origin. Here these degrees of freedom are identified with near-horizon but
non-compact gravitational perturbations which are decomposed into delocalized
multipoles. Their world-line (kinetic) action is determined within the
classical effective field theory (CLEFT) approach and their interactions are
discussed. The case of the long-wavelength scattering of a scalar wave off a
Schwarzschild black hole is treated in some detail, interpreting within the
CLEFT approach the equality of the leading absorption cross section with the
horizon area.Comment: 8 pages. Awarded fifth prize in the 2008 Gravity Research Foundation

Extraction of scattering lengths from final-state interactions
A recently proposed method based on dispersion theory, that allows to extract
the scattering length of a hadronic two-body system from corresponding
final-state interactions, is generalized to the situation where the Coulomb
interaction is present. The steps required in a concrete practical application
are discussed in detail. In addition a thorough examination of the accuracy of
the proposed method is presented and a comparison is made with results achieved
with other methods like the Jost-function approach based on the effective-range
approximation. Deficiencies of the latter method are pointed out. The
reliability of the dispersion theory method for extracting also the effective
range is investigated.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, some corrections to text, to appear in Phys.

New analytic unitarization schemes
We consider two well-known classes of unitarization of Born amplitudes of
hadron elastic scattering. The standard class, which saturates at the black
disk limit includes the standard eikonal representation, while the other class,
which goes beyond the black-disk limit to reach the full unitarity circle,
includes the U matrix. It is shown that the basic properties of these schemes
are independent of the functional form used for the unitarisation, and that U
matrix and eikonal schemes can be extended to have similar properties. A common
form of unitarisation is proposed interpolating between both classes. The
correspondence with different nonlinear equations are also briefly examined.Comment: 6 pages, 10 figures, corrected typos, 1 fig. redro
Post-Newtonian corrections to the motion of spinning bodies in NRGR
In this paper we include spin and multipole moment effects in the formalism
used to describe the motion of extended objects recently introduced in
hep-th/0409156. A suitable description for spinning bodies is developed and
spin-orbit, spin-spin and quadrupole-spin Hamiltonians are found at leading
order. The existence of tidal, as well as self induced finite size effects is
shown, and the contribution to the Hamiltonian is calculated in the latter. It
is shown that tidal deformations start formally at O(v^6) and O(v^10) for
maximally rotating general and compact objects respectively, whereas self
induced effects can show up at leading order. Agreement is found for the cases
where the results are known.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures. Typos corrected, to appear in Physical Review
Dynamical coupled-channels analysis of 1H(e,e'pi)N reactions
We have performed a dynamical coupled-channels analysis of available
p(e,e'pi)N data in the region of W < 1.6 GeV and Q^2 < 1.45 (GeV/c)^2. The
channels included are gamma^* N, pi N, eta N, and pi pi N which has pi Delta,
rho N, and sigma N components. With the hadronic parameters of the model
determined in our previous investigations of pi N --> pi N, pi pi N reactions,
we have found that the available data in the considered W < 1.6 GeV region can
be fitted well by only adjusting the bare gamma^* N --> N^* helicity amplitudes
for the lowest N^* states in P33, P11, S11 and D13 partial waves. The
sensitivity of the resulting parameters to the amount of data included in the
analysis is investigated. The importance of coupled-channels effect on the
p(e,e' pi)N cross sections is demonstrated. The meson cloud effects, as
required by the unitarity conditions, on the gamma^* N --> N^* form factors are
also examined. Necessary future developments, both experimentally and
theoretically, are discussed.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures. Version to appear in PR
Superembedding methods for 4d N=1 SCFTs
We extend SO(4,2) covariant lightcone embedding methods of four-dimensional
CFTs to N=1 superconformal field theory (SCFT). Manifest superconformal
SU(2,2|1) invariance is achieved by realizing 4D superconformal space as a
surface embedded in the projective superspace spanned by certain complex chiral
supermatrices. Because SU(2,2|1) acts linearly on the ambient space, the
constraints on correlators implied by superconformal Ward identities are
automatically solved in this formalism. Applications include new, compact
expressions for correlation functions containing one anti-chiral superfield and
arbitrary chiral superfield insertions, and manifestly invariant expressions
for the superconformal cross-ratios that parametrize the four-point function of
two chiral and two anti-chiral fields. Superconformal expressions for the
leading singularities in the OPE of chiral and anti-chiral operators are also
given. Because of covariance, our expressions are valid in any superconformally
flat background, e.g., AdS_4 or R times S^3.Comment: 33 pages, clarification of constraints, version to appear in PR
Limits on entanglement in rotationally-invariant scattering of spin systems
This paper investigates the dynamical generation of entanglement in
scattering systems, in particular two spin systems that interact via
rotationally-invariant scattering. The spin degrees of freedom of the in-states
are assumed to be in unentangled, pure states, as defined by the entropy of
entanglement. Because of the restriction of rotationally-symmetric
interactions, perfectly-entangling S-matrices, i.e. those that lead to a
maximally entangled out-state, only exist for a certain class of separable
in-states. Using Clebsch-Gordan coefficients for the rotation group, the
scattering phases that determine the S-matrix are determined for the case of
spin systems with , 1, and 3/2.Comment: 6 pages, no figures; v.2: sections added, edited for clarity,

Improvements to the Method of Dispersion Relations for B Nonleptonic Decays
We bring some clarifications and improvements to the method of dispersion
relations in the external masses variables, that we proposed recently for
investigating the final state interactions in the B nonleptonic decays. We
first present arguments for the existence of an additional term in the
dispersion representation, which arises from an equal-time commutator in the
LSZ formalism and can be approximated by the conventional factorized amplitude.
The reality properties of the spectral function and the Goldberger-Treiman
procedure to perform the hadronic unitarity sum are analyzed in more detail. We
also improve the treatment of the strong interaction part by including the
contributions of both t and u-channel trajectories in the Regge amplitudes.
Applications to the and decays are
presented.Comment: 16 pages, 4 new figures. modifications of the dispersion

Cherenkov radiation by particles traversing the background radiatio n
High energy particles traversing the Universe through the cosmic microwave
backgroung radiation can, in principle, emit Cherenkov radiation. It is shown
that the energy threshold for this radiation is extremely high and its
intensity would be too low due to the low density of the "relic photons gas"
and very weak interaction of two photons.Comment: 6 pages, LATEX, no Figs.; to be published in JETP Lett. 75 (N4)
