Impact of Trade Liberalization on Foreign Direct Investment in Indian Industries

    Get PDF
The paper undertakes analyses at three levels and the results arrived at different levels indicate that trade liberalization has had a favourable effect on FDI flows in India. It is also found that the regions having greater extent of international trade are able to attract greater amount of FDI. Some evidence is found that point to differential effects of trade associated with international vertical integration and intra-industry trade. Though liberalization has led to a substantial increase in intra-industry trade, much of the intra-industry being horizontal in nature in India is not found to have a strong favourable effect on FDI.Trade Liberalization, Foreign Direct Investmetn, India, Indian Industries

Impact of Trade on Employment Generation in Manufacturing in India

    Get PDF
Analysing the impact of trade on manufacturing employment in India, it is found that exports had a favourable effect on industrial employment, but the positive effect of export increase was offset by the negative effect of increases in imports. The net effect was marginal. The failure of trade to raise industrial employment is traced primarily to the changing product composition of trade and the changing direction of trade. Petroleum products have emerged as a major item of Indias exports whereas the traditional labour-intensive products have lost their share. The analysis reveals an adverse effect of changing factor prices on manufacturing employment. One interesting finding of the study is that after a long period of jobless growth, the corporate sector organized manufacturing has achieved in the last four years (2004-05 through 2007-08) a high rate of growth in employment, about 7 per cent per annum on average.employment generation, trade, Manufacturing Sector, India

Newcomers, Welcome? Exploring the Connection Between Demographic Change, Immigration Legislation Design and Policy Mobilities in Ageing Japan

Japan is ageing, and its population is declining. Given the potential detrimental economic and social consequences brought about by this sort of demographic change, it has been suggested that the Japanese could benefit from the implementation of more liberal (im)migration policies. This thesis studies the demographic change – immigration policy development nexus from the perspective of the state in the context of Japan and assesses the role that immigration plays within the larger population debate. A constructivist grounded theory methodology is utilised to analyse primary and secondary qualitative data. Additionally, two theoretical approaches of political demography (Robbins and Smith, 2016) and policy mobilities paradigm (see Baker et al. 2016) are employed in order to explore how demographic change may be informing immigration policy design and how Japan might be interacting with other nations and international organizations in such process. The thesis concludes with the observation that the immigration option has not been prioritized to address the various challenges that have been brought about by population decline and ageing. The available evidence gathered for this project also indicates that the latest amendments to the law – which are more liberal in nature – do not consider immigration to be a replacement for the loss in population. These amendments do, however, facilitate the mobility of foreign human resources with a view to partially alleviating specific labour shortages and having newcomers contribute to economic growth while, at the same time, respecting the current ‘façade’ regarding immigration control policies as well as the country’s nationhood regulatory principle. As such, this work makes the case that Japan’s strategy regarding immigration policy change is that of ‘highly selective, cautious, progressive incrementalism’. This thesis also suggests that Japanese policy-makers closely examine other countries’ systems and keep track of the latest trends regarding immigration control management but remain reticent to actively engage with other nations and international organizations in the design of the legislation

Sentence Structure of Singlish in Written Materials: The Influence of Chinese on the English Superstrate

In this paper we studied sentence structure in Singlish, which is the English-based creole language spoken in Singapore. We concentrated on two of its most distinctive characteristics – topic prominence and subject drop – so that we could understand the interactive process between English and the native strata that conditioned its development. As a means to conduct our research, we wrote a case study in which we analyzed a number of sentences taken from two Singlish texts, since most studies so far had predominantly concentrated on the analysis of oral materials obliterating as a result the written production of such language. The ultimate objective of our paper was to confirm whether the results of our investigation corresponded to those which linguists who study Singlish on different grounds have defended over the last few years.Departamento de Filología InglesaGrado en Estudios Inglese

Technology Spillover of Foreign Direct Investment: An Analysis of Different Clusters in India

    Get PDF
This paper explores the technology spillover effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Indian manufacturing industries across different clusters in India. To measure the spillover effect to domestic firms in a particular cluster, a model is used that combines an innovative production function with a conventional one. The empirical findings reveal significant variations across clusters with regard to spillovers. While some clusters benefit from cluster-specific foreign presence and technology stock, a more commonly observed pattern is that domestic firms in a cluster gain from the presence of foreign firms in other clusters of the region and region-specific technology stock
