The Hate U Giveā€™s Swear Words & Word Formation Processes Analysis

    Get PDF
The Black characters in The Hate U Give novel like to use many swear words in order to express their feelings and emotions. This is a study which deals with word formation process. To analyze the word formation processes in both swear words and non-swear words are the purposes of this study. To help conducting this study, close reading and note taking are used to collect the data. This study found that there are two types of swear words frequently used by the Black characters. Also, Expletive Interjection is the most frequent type of swear words which means that using swear words is how the Black characters express their emotions and feelings in certain situation

    Optimize-via-Predict: Realizing out-of-sample optimality in data-driven optimization

We examine a stochastic formulation for data-driven optimization wherein the decision-maker is not privy to the true distribution, but has knowledge that it lies in some hypothesis set and possesses a historical data set, from which information about it can be gleaned. We define a prescriptive solution as a decision rule mapping such a data set to decisions. As there does not exist prescriptive solutions that are generalizable over the entire hypothesis set, we define out-of-sample optimality as a local average over a neighbourhood of hypotheses, and averaged over the sampling distribution. We prove sufficient conditions for local out-of-sample optimality, which reduces to functions of the sufficient statistic of the hypothesis family. We present an optimization problem that would solve for such an out-of-sample optimal solution, and does so efficiently by a combination of sampling and bisection search algorithms. Finally, we illustrate our model on the newsvendor model, and find strong performance when compared against alternatives in the literature. There are potential implications of our research on end-to-end learning and Bayesian optimization.Comment: 28 page

Dealing with the Complexity of Adaptive Teaching through Collaborative Teacher Professional Development

    Get PDF
This chapter focuses on the challenges that teachers face in todayā€™s heterogeneous classrooms when it comes to addressing studentsā€™ educational needs. By means of a conceptual discussion about this topic, relating to recent empirical studies in this field, we discuss whether teachersā€™ adaptive teaching behavior could be promoted through professional development approaches ā€“ such as Lesson Study ā€“ that focus explicitly on studentsā€™ learning. Taking studentsā€™ learning as a starting point in collaborative and classroom-based professional development approaches, one could expect that teachers gain more awareness of the variety of their studentsā€™ educational needs which, in turn, may lead to teachers better addressing these needs in classroom settings. It is argued that through such a cyclical and inquiry-based way of working, teachers may start to feel more competent and able to address the learning needs of students, leading to increasingly adaptive teaching practices. However, despite promising results in the literature, there is still much debate on the evidence of how Lesson Study influences adaptive teaching behavior in favor of all students and how this, in turn, impacts student learning. A ā€œlocal proof routeā€ to testing the effectiveness of Lesson Study might offer suitable directions

Playing with Fire: Analysing the Role of Fire in Architecture

    No full text
This research addresses the four inherent themes within fire. Fire has an association with myth due to its complexity in nature and existence long before modern science. Even today these myths live on as a way to describe the characteristics of fire as an architectural element. Bachelardā€™s book The Psychoanalysis of Fire looks at how fire connects with our primitive self through reverie. Fireā€™s contemplative character allows us to escape the surrounding world, and transport us to a kind of subconscious level. An extension of the reverie of fire is fireā€™s relation to the primitive. Although we have evolved into advance species, at a basic level we are all still animals. There are certain primal needs inherent within us such as sense of safety and community. Fire fulfils these needs architecturally by providing the setting for ā€˜primitive experiences.ā€™ The last theme I will look at has to do with fireā€™s association with living beings. Even though fire is not scientifically a living organism, it is often compared to a living being due to its complexity in character. Moreover, it often symbolises life in many levels of society such as the civic hearth during the Greco-Roman era. Several case studies are looked at to see the application of the ideas represented within the themes of fire. A range of contemporary architecture is chosen to show how the ideals associated with fire are still applicable in architecture even today. In the case studies fire has either been excluded physically but present symbolically, or its presence has been reduced to the bare minimum. The case studies aim to show how fire can be addressed architecturally using other architectural elements that are traditionally associated with fire, such as chimneys and hearth. Due to current issues such as sustainability, having fire physically within a space is becoming more difficult. Many places around the world have banned open fires. An option to continue celebrating fire within architecture is through the symbolic representation of the element. This can be done by using other architectural elements that we traditionally associate with fire ..

Passage Effect on Aging of Human Umbilical Cord Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cell

To be used in regenerative medicine, cells should be checked for various conditions, including cell aging. This study aimed to learn senescent profile and its relation to cell viability, proliferation and cell size in various passages, which were done in Ī±-MEM-10% PRP medium, until senescence-associated Ī²-galactosidase (SA-Ī²-Gal) positive cells were found. Stem cells were isolated from umbilical cord tissue by multiple harvest explant method, cultured in Ī±-MEM-10% PRP until P-17 and stained using SA-Ī²-Gal staining. Viability, Population Doubling Time (PDT), percentage SA-Ī²-Gal (+) and cell size at 30% confluent and at senescent staining were analyzed. Passages with SA-Ī²-Gal (+) and (-) were compared in term of viability, PDT and cell size at 30% confluent. Further, cell size at senescent staining between SA-Ī²-Gal (+) and (-) groups were compared. Viability and PDT showed no significant difference between SA-Ī²-Gal (+) and (-) groups, while cell size at 30% confluence showed significant increase in SA-Ī²-Gal (+) compared to (-) groups. Further, cell size in senescent staining showed significantly smaller cell size in SA-Ī²-Gal (-) compared to SA-Ī²-Gal (+) cells. Moreover, this study showed that even in SA-Ī²-Gal (+) group, viability was greater than 91%, PDT was less than 2.1 days and cell size was less than 2602 Āµm2. In conclusion, umbilical cord derived MSCs that were cultured in Ī±-MEM-10% PRP began to undergo aging at P-10. Morphological criteria of UC-MSC aging were cell size greater than 2602 Āµm2 with a change in morphology toward a rounded shape
