Le cas de Nicos Mitsakis est unique dans l’architecture grecque du xxe siècle. Mort jeune, en 1941, à l’âge de 42 ans, il a démontré une capacité à renouveler, avec une efficacité exceptionnelle, l’architecture grecque. Lorsqu’il fut engagé à la Direction du service architectural du ministère, avec pour mission la conception de nouveaux édifices scolaires, le Mouvement moderne n’avait pas atteint la Grèce. La réalisation d’écoles a offert à l’architecte athénien une opportunité exceptionnelle de reconsidérer, dans un esprit moderne, la tradition intellectuelle classique et byzantine de l’architecture grecque.Nikos Mitsakis is unique in 20th century Greek architecture. Despite an early death at the age of 42 in 1941, he proved himself capable of revitalizing Greek architecture with exceptional effectiveness. When he entered the architectural service of the Education Ministry where his mission was the conception of new school buildings, Modernism had not yet reached Greece. A Comparison of Solar Cycle Variations in the Equatorial Rotation Rates of the Sun's Subsurface, Surface, Corona, and Sunspot Groups

Using the Solar Optical Observing Network (SOON) sunspot-group data for the period 1985-2010, the variations in the annual mean equatorial-rotation rates of the sunspot groups are determined and compared with the known variations in the solar equatorial-rotation rates determined from the following data: i) the plasma rotation rates at 0.94Rsun, 0.95Rsun,...,1.0Rsun measured by Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG) during the period 1995-2010, ii) the data on the soft X-ray corona determined from Yohkoh/SXT full disk images for the years 1992-2001, iii) the data on small bright coronal structures (SBCS) which were traced in Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO)/EIT images during the period 1998-2006, and iv) the Mount Wilson Doppler-velocity measurements during the period 1986-2007. A large portion (up to approximate 30 deg latitude) of the mean differential-rotation profile of the sunspot groups lies between those of the internal differential-rotation rates at 0.94Rsun and 0.98Rsun.The variation in the yearly mean equatorial-rotation rate of the sunspot groups seems to be lagging that of the equatorial-rotation rate determined from the GONG measurements by one to two years.The amplitude of the latter is very small.The solar-cycle variation in the equatorial-rotation rate of the solar corona closely matches that determined from the sunspot-group data.The variation in the equatorial-rotation rate determined from the Mount Wilson Doppler-velocity data closely resembles the corresponding variation in the equatorial-rotation rate determined from the sunspot-group data that included the values of the abnormal angular motions (> 3 deg per day) of the sunspot groups. Concours pour le musée des Antiquités égyptiennes du Caire 1895

Après les savants de la Commission des sciences et des arts qui avaient accompagné Bonaparte en Égypte, l’archéologue Auguste Mariette s’attache à mettre en valeur l’Antiquité égyptienne. Deux bâtiments faisant office de musée ont successivement abrité au Caire les objets découverts lors des fouilles entreprises sous sa direction, puis sous celle de Gaston Maspero. Sous le mandat de son successeur, Jacques de Morgan, le projet, ancien, de construire un véritable musée prend corps. Un concours d’architecture est organisé en 1894 par Honoré Daumet, président de la Société centrale des architectes en France, avec le soutien de l’opinion internationale. Le nombre élevé de participants et la variété des projets illustrent le retentissement et l’intérêt suscités par le concours, son sujet et le pays dans lequel il avait lieu. Fruit de la recherche internationale, des synthèses font à la fois le point des connaissances sur le déroulement du concours, les délibérations du jury, la construction du bâtiment, mais aussi sur le travail des architectes à la fin du XIXe siècle et les questions de style. Ces textes sont complétés de sources traduites en français (documents d’archives pour certains inédits, articles de la presse internationale), et de photographies, qui étayent les commentaires des spécialistes.
