    Towards an Understanding of the New Charm and Charm-Strange Mesons

    The observation of the D_{sJ}^*(2317), D_{sJ}(2460), and SELEX D^*_{sJ}(2632) states with properties differing considerably from what was expected has led to a renewed interest in hadron spectroscopy. In addition to these states, non-strange partners of the D_{sJ} states have also been observed. Understanding the D_0^* and D_1' states can provide important insights into the D_{sJ} states. In this contribution I examine quark model predictions for the D_0^* and D_1' states and discuss experimental measurements that can shed light on them. I find that these states are well described as the broad, j=1/2 non-strange charmed P-wave mesons. In the latter part of this writeup I discuss the c bar{s} possibilities for the SELEX D^*_{sJ}(2632) and measurements that can shed light on it.Comment: Talk presented at the 1st Meeting of the APS Topical Group on Hadronic Physics (Fermilab, Oct 24-26, 2004). 4 pages uses jpcon

    What are the impacts of implementing ISOs on the competitiveness of manufacturing industry in China?

    Based on the proposed ‘PIE’ analytical framework, this paper argues that the preparation, implementation and evaluation of international standards (ISOs) affect the competitiveness of (foreign-financed) export-oriented manufacturing industry in southern and southeastern China, both in the short- and long-term. During the period of preparation, the decision to adopt ISOs is mainly driven by market demand and/or by the decisions of established competitors. Negative effects due to the diversion of scarce resources and institutional resistance to change during the period of transitional implementation are offset by the overall enhancement of the firm's productivity in the long run. ‘Tailoring for the external audit’ and ‘second-best’ practices are two strategies commonly employed by Chinese firms to lower the transaction costs involved in ISO audits

    Government policy and competitive advantages of foreign-financed firms in the Guangdong province of southern China

    This paper investigates the impact of various Chinese government policies on the competitive advantages of foreign-financed manufacturing firms in Guangdong province of southern China. The objectives of various government sector-specific policies are to lubricate the factor markets in labour, capital and products and to facilitate the operation of foreign-financed firms. However, the actual effects are often quite different: the ambiguity, complexity and inflexibility of policies impose higher transaction costs on foreign-financed firms. These disadvantages offset some economic benefits gained under the central government's preferential foreign direct investment policy and thus damages the competitive advantages of foreign-financed firms based in Guangdong. Worse still, the lack of co-ordination among various bureaux further hampers arbitration between government bureaux and foreign investors

    Does WTO accession matter for the Chinese textile and clothing industry?

    Based on field surveys conducted in Guangdong, Zhejiang and Beijing in 2000 and 2001, this paper argues that accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) by China will create a new competitive arena for different categories of textile and clothing firms located in that country, partly dependent on the size and ownership of the firm. From the perspectives of reducing import tariffs, eliminating export quotas and the regulations on trade disputes, WTO accession does matter for the majority of Chinese firms in this ‘win–lose’ game. From the perspective of compliance with international standards, this paper argues that accession to the WTO does not really matter for some Chinese firms, as they may not survive the intense competition prior to 2005, when the effects of the Agreement on Textiles and Clothing materialise

    The Effectiveness of Augmented Reality for Astronauts on Lunar Missions

    The uses of Augmented Reality (AR) and Head-Up Displays (HUDs) are becoming more prominent in industries such as aviation, automotive and medicine. An AR device such as the Microsoft Hololens can project holograms onto the user’s natural field of view to assist with completion of a variety of tasks. Unfortunately, only a little research and development has begun in the space sector for astronauts using these HUDs. Future lunar missions could incorporate AR for astronauts to ease task load and improve accuracy. The study evaluated the usability, subjective workload, and task performance of 22 participants using the Microsoft HoloLens to complete tasks that are analogous those completed by astronauts on a lunar mission, including navigation, rock sample collection, and maintenance tasks. Results from the usability survey, NASA TLX, and task performance evaluation suggested that AR supports astronaut missions with reduced workload, and minimizing task errors. Usability data information collected from the participants sought to improve on the User Interface (UI), and confirmed the aforementioned results. The researcher concluded that further research must be conducted to test the development of interfaces along with the usability aspect by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) astronauts

    Spin and model identification of Z' bosons at the LHC

    Heavy resonances appearing in the clean Drell-Yan channel may be the first new physics to be observed at the proton-proton CERN LHC. If a new resonance is discovered at the LHC as a peak in the dilepton invariant mass distribution, the characterization of its spin and couplings will proceed via measuring production rates and angular distributions of the decay products. We discuss the discrimination of the spin-1 of Z' representative models (Z'_{SSM}, Z'_{psi}, Z'_{eta}, Z'_{chi}, Z'_{LR}, and Z'_{ALR}) against the Randall-Sundrum graviton resonance (spin-2) and a spin-0 resonance (sneutrino) with the same mass and producing the same number of events under the observed peak. To assess the range of the Z' mass where the spin determination can be performed to a given confidence level, we focus on the angular distributions of the Drell-Yan leptons, in particular we use as a basic observable an angular-integrated center-edge asymmetry, A_{CE}. The spin of a heavy Z' gauge boson can be established with A_{CE} up to M_{Z'} \simeq 3.0 TeV, for an integrated luminosity of 100 fb^{-1}, or minimal number of events around 110. We also examine the distinguishability of the considered Z' models from one another, once the spin-1 has been established, using the total dilepton production cross section. With some assumption, one might be able to distinguish among these Z' models at 95% C.L. up to M_{Z'} \simeq 2.1 TeV.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figure
