    A Deep \u3cem\u3eChandra\u3c/em\u3e ACIS Survey of M83

    We have obtained a series of deep X-ray images of the nearby galaxy M83 using Chandra, with a total exposure of 729 ks. Combining the new data with earlier archival observations totaling 61 ks, we find 378 point sources within the D25 contour of the galaxy. We find 80 more sources, mostly background active galactic nuclei (AGNs), outside of the D25 contour. Of the X-ray sources, 47 have been detected in a new radio survey of M83 obtained using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. Of the X-ray sources, at least 87 seem likely to be supernova remnants (SNRs), based on a combination of their properties in X-rays and at other wavelengths. We attempt to classify the point source population of M83 through a combination of spectral and temporal analysis. As part of this effort, we carry out an initial spectral analysis of the 29 brightest X-ray sources. The soft X-ray sources in the disk, many of which are SNRs, are associated with the spiral arms, while the harder X-ray sources, mostly X-ray binaries (XRBs), do not appear to be. After eliminating AGNs, foreground stars, and identified SNRs from the sample, we construct the cumulative luminosity function (CLF) of XRBs brighter than 8 × 1035 erg s–1. Despite M83\u27s relatively high star formation rate, the CLF indicates that most of the XRBs in the disk are low mass XRBs

    A Damped Ly-alpha Absorption-line System in an Apparent Void at Redshift 2.38

    We study the contents of an apparent void in the distribution of Ly-alpha emitting galaxies at redshift 2.38. We show that this void is not empty, but contains a damped Ly-alpha absorption-line system, seen in absorption against background QSO 2138-4427. Imaging does not reveal any galaxy associated with this absorption-line system, but it contains metals (Fe/H ~ -1.3), and its large velocity range (~ 180 km/s) implies a significant mass.Comment: Accepted for publication in Publ.     A survey of X-ray emission from 100 kpc radio jets

    We have completed a Chandra snapshot survey of 54 radio jets that are extended on arcsec scales. These are associated with flat spectrum radio quasars spanning a redshift range z=0.3 to 2.1. X-ray emission is detected from the jet of approximately 60% of the sample objects. We assume minimum energy and apply conditions consistent with the original Felten-Morrison calculations in order to estimate the Lorentz factors and the apparent Doppler factors. This allows estimates of the enthalpy fluxes, which turn out to be comparable to the radiative luminosities.Comment: Conference Proceedings IAU Symposium No. 313, Extragalactic jets from every angle, pp. 219-224, 4 figure

    The duty cycle of radio galaxies revealed by LOFAR : remnant and restarted radio source populations in the Lockman Hole

Companion paper to Jurlin et al., also in today's arXiv postingFeedback from radio jets associated with Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) plays a profound role in the evolution of galaxies. Kinetic power of these radio jets appears to show temporal variation, but the mechanism(s) responsible for this process are not yet clear. Recently, the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) has uncovered large populations of active, remnant and restarted radio jet populations. By focusing on LOFAR data in the Lockman Hole, in this work we use the Radio AGN in Semi-Analytic Environments (RAiSE) dynamical model to present the first self-consistent modelling analysis of active, remnant and restarted radio source populations. Consistent with other recent work, our models predict that remnant radio lobes fade quickly. Any high (>10 percent) observed fraction of remnant and restarted sources therefore requires a dominant population of short-lived jets. We speculate that this could plausibly be provided by feedback-regulated accretion.Peer reviewe

    On D-wave meson spectroscopy and the K∗(1410)−K∗(1680)K^* (1410) - K^* (1680) problem

    The mass spectrum of D-wave mesons is considered in a nonrelativistic constituent quark model. The results show a common mass degeneracy of the isovector and isodoublet states of the 1 3D1^3D_1 and 1 3D3^3D_3 nonets, and suggest therefore that the K∗(1680)K^\ast (1680) cannot be the I=1/2 member of the 1 3D1^3D_1 nonet. They also suggest that the η2(1870),\eta _2(1870), presently omitted form the Meson Summary Table, should be interpreted as the I=0 ssˉs\bar{s} state of the 1 1D2^1D_2 nonet.Comment: 11 pages, LaTe
