\u3cem\u3eRhizobium etli\u3c/em\u3e CE3 Bacteroid Lipopolysaccharides Are Structurally Similar but Not Identical to Those Produced by Cultured CE3 Bacteria
Rhizobium etli CE3 bacteroids were isolated from Phaseolus vulgaris root nodules. The lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from the bacteroids was purified and compared with the LPS from laboratory-cultured R. etli CE3and from cultures grown in the presence of anthocyanin. Comparisons were made of the O-chain polysaccharide, the core oligosaccharide, and the lipid A. Although LPS from CE3 bacteria and bacteroids are structurally similar, it was found that bacteroid LPS had specific modifications to both the O-chain polysaccharide and lipid A portions of their LPS. Cultures grown with anthocyanin contained modifications only to the O-chain polysaccharide. The changes to the O-chain polysaccharide consisted of the addition of a single methyl group to the 2-position of a fucosyl residue in one of the five O-chain trisaccharide repeat units.This same change occurred for bacteria grown in the presence of anthocyanin. This methylation change correlated with the inability of bacteroid LPS and LPS from anthocyanin-containing cultures to bind the monoclonal antibody JIM28. The coreoligosaccharide region of bacteroid LPS and from anthocyanin grown cultures was identical to that of LPS from normal laboratory-cultured CE3. The lipid A from bacteroids consisted exclusively of a tetraacylated species compared with the presence of both tetra-and pentaacylated lipid A from laboratory cultures. Growth in the presence of anthocyanin did not affect the lipid A structure. Compact Hyperbolic Extra Dimensions: Branes, Kaluza-Klein Modes and Cosmology
We reconsider theories with low gravitational (or string) scale M_* where
Newton's constant is generated via new large-volume spatial dimensions, while
Standard Model states are localized to a 3-brane. Utilizing compact hyperbolic
manifolds (CHM's) we show that the spectrum of Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes is
radically altered. This allows an early universe cosmology with normal
evolution up to substantial temperatures, and completely negates the
constraints on M_* arising from astrophysics. Furthermore, an exponential
hierarchy between the usual Planck scale and the true fundamental scale of
physics can emerge with only order unity coefficients. The linear size of the

Economics of some soil conservation practices
In applying conservation and fertility improvement plans, farmers have a choice between alternative combinations of land use, fertilizer applications and erosion control practices. Within limits, they may choose between different rotations and different fertilizer applications combined with different erosion control practices and still farm the land in accordance with the soil capabilities.
While land use in accordance with soil capabilities and appropriate fertilization is basic to soil conservation, these measures need to be supplemented by supporting conservation practices such as contouring, sod waterways, mulching, drainage, flumes, etc., if soil is to be conserved and improved most efficiently.
Successful conservation farming (that system which will increase total farm production, build up soil fertility, control erosion and maximize earnings) cannot be tailor-made to fit all farms but involves consideration of each individual\u27s situation. The farmer (and those working with him) must analyze his problem to determine his costs and returns for the farm as a whole under alternative combinations of crops, fertilization and supporting conservation measures to determine which system will best fit his capital position and abilities and still do the conservation job
