A Conserved Bach Current
The Bach tensor and a vector which generates conformal symmetries allow a
conserved four-current to be defined. The Bach four-current gives rise to a
quasilocal two-surface expression for power per luminosity distance in the
Vaidya exterior of collapsing fluid interiors. This is interpreted in terms of
entropy generation.Comment: to appear in Class. Quantum Gra
Schwarzschild Atmospheric Processes: A Classical Path to the Quantum
We develop some classical descriptions for processes in the Schwarzschild
string atmosphere. These processes suggest relationships between macroscopic
and microscopic scales. The classical descriptions developed in this essay
highlight the fundamental quantum nature of the Schwarzschild atmospheric
processes.Comment: to appear in Gen. Rel. Gra
AAA gunnermodel based on observer theory
The Luenberger observer theory is used to develop a predictive model of a gunner's tracking response in antiaircraft artillery systems. This model is composed of an observer, a feedback controller and a remnant element. An important feature of the model is that the structure is simple, hence a computer simulation requires only a short execution time. A parameter identification program based on the least squares curve fitting method and the Gauss Newton gradient algorithm is developed to determine the parameter values of the gunner model. Thus, a systematic procedure exists for identifying model parameters for a given antiaircraft tracking task. Model predictions of tracking errors are compared with human tracking data obtained from manned simulation experiments. Model predictions are in excellent agreement with the empirical data for several flyby and maneuvering target trajectories
Radiation and String Atmosphere for Relativistic Stars
We extend the Vaidya radiating metric to include both a radiation field and a
string fluid. Assuming diffusive transport for the string fluid, we find new
analytic solutions of Einstein's field equations. Our new solutions represent
an extention of Xanthopoulos superposition.Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev. D, Rapid Communicatio
Fractal Scales in a Schwarzschild Atmosphere
Recently, Glass and Krisch have extended the Vaidya radiating metric to
include both a radiation fluid and a string fluid [1999 Class. Quantum Grav.
vol 16, 1175]. Mass diffusion in the extended Schwarzschild atmosphere was
studied. The continuous solutions of classical diffusive transport are believed
to describe the envelope of underlying fractal behavior. In this work we
examine the classical picture at scales on which fractal behavior might be
evident.Comment: to appear in Class. Quantum Gra
Variability of the X-ray P Cygni Line Profiles from Circinus X-1 Near Zero Phase
The luminous X-ray binary Circinus X-1 has been observed twice near zero
orbital phase using the High-Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS)
onboard Chandra. The source was in a high-flux state during a flare for the
first observation, and it was in a low-flux state during a dip for the second.
Spectra from both flux states show clear P Cygni lines, predominantly from
H-like and He-like ion species. These indicate the presence of a high-velocity
outflow from the Cir X-1 system which we interpret as an equatorial
accretion-disk wind, and from the blueshifted resonance absorption lines we
determine outflow velocities of 200 - 1900 km/s with no clear velocity
differences between the two flux states. The line strengths and profiles,
however, are strongly variable both between the two observations as well as
within the individual observations. We characterize this variability and
suggest that it is due to both changes in the amount of absorbing material
along the line of sight as well as changes in the ionization level of the wind.
We also refine constraints on the accretion-disk wind model using improved
plasma diagnostics such as the He-like Mg XI triplet, and we consider the
possibility that the X-ray absorption features seen from superluminal jet
sources can generally be explained via high-velocity outflows.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted by ApJ (Main
Dimension in a Radiative Stellar Atmosphere
Dimensional scales are examined in an extended 3+1 Vaidya atmosphere
surrounding a Schwarzschild source. At one scale, the Vaidya null fluid
vanishes and the spacetime contains only a single spherical 2-surface. Both of
these behaviors can be addressed by including higher dimensions in the
spacetime metric.Comment: to appear in Gen. Rel. Gra
