Trichilia monadelpha Bark Extracts Inhibit Carrageenan-Induced Foot-Oedema in the 7-Day Old Chick and the Oedema Associated with Adjuvant-Induced Arthritis in Rats
Trichilia monadelpha (Thonn) JJ De Wilde (Meliaceae) bark extract is used in African traditional medicine for the management of various disease conditions including inflammatory disorders such as arthritis. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the anti-inflammatory properties of aqueous (TWE), alcoholic (TAE) and petroleum ether extract (TPEE) of T. monadelpha using the 7-day old chick-carrageenan footpad oedema (acute inflammation) and the adjuvant-induced arthritis model in rats (chronic inflammation). TWE and TPEE significantly inhibited the chick-carrageenan footpad oedema with maximal inhibitions of 57.79±3.92 and 63.83±12 respectively, but TAE did not. The reference anti-inflammatory drugs (diclofenac and dexamethasone) inhibited the chick-carrageenan-induced footpad oedema, with maximal inhibitions of 64.92±2.03 and 71.85±15.34 respectively. Furthermore, all the extracts and the reference anti-inflammatory agents (diclofenac, dexamethasone, methotrexate) inhibited the inflammatory oedema associated with adjuvant arthritis with maximal inhibitions of 64.41±5.56, 57.04±8.57, 62.18±2.56%, for TWE, TAE and TPEE respectively and 80.28±5.79, 85.75±2.96, 74.68±3.03% for diclofenac, dexamethasone and methotrexate respectively. Phytochemical screening of the plant bark confirmed the presence of a large array of plant constituents such as alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids, saponins, steroids, tannins and terpenoids, all of which may be potential sources of phyto-antiinflammatory agents. Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine for Work Related Musculoskeletal Disorders Associated with Job Contentment in Dental Professionals: Indian Outlook
Background: High prevalence rates of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSD) among dentists have been reported. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies can be helpful in managing and preventing work-related musculoskeletal disorders. The purpose of this study was to determine if dental professionals are using CAM for work-related musculoskeletal disorders. Who have greater job satisfaction: dentist who uses Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) or conventional therapy (CT) as a treatment modality for WRMSDMethod: Dentists who registered in Uttar Pradesh state, India under Indian Dental Council, Uttar Pradesh branch (n=1134) were surveyed. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses and logistic regression.Result: A response rate of 53% (n=601) was obtained, revealing that 82% (n=487) of the respondents suffered from work-related musculoskeletal disorders. The use of complementary and alternative medicine or conventional therapy was reported among 80% (n=390) of the dentists with work-related musculoskeletal disorders. Complementary and alternative medicine users reported greater overall health compared to conventional therapy users (P<0.001). Of those with work-related musculoskeletal disorders, 35.5% (n=172) considered a career change for once, and 4.0% (n=19) reported having left dentistry.Conclusion: Complementary and alternative medicine therapies may improve quality of life, reduce work disruptions and enhance job satisfaction for dentists who suffer from work-related musculoskeletal disorders. It is important that dentists incorporate complementary and alternative medicine strategies into practice to facilitate musculoskeletal health that will enable longer and healthier careers, increase productivity, provide safer workplace and prevent musculoskeletal disorders.Keywords: CAM, dentist, musculoskeletal disorder
D-brane Inspired Fermion Mass Textures
In this paper, the issues of the quark mass hierarchies and the Cabbibo
Kobayashi Maskawa mixing are analyzed in a class of intersecting D-brane
configurations with Standard Model gauge symmetry. The relevant mass matrices
are constructed taking into account the constraints imposed by extra abelian
symmetries and anomaly cancelation conditions. Possible mass generating
mechanisms including perturbative as well as non-perturbative effects are
discussed and specific patterns of mass textures are found characterized by the
hierarchies of the scales where the various sources contribute. It is argued
that the Cholesky decomposition of the mass matrices is the most appropriate
way to determine the properties of these fermion mass patterns, while the
associated triangular mass matrix form provides a unified description of all
phenomenologically equivalent symmetric and non-symmetric mass matrices. An
elegant analytic formula is derived for the Cholesky triangular form of the
mass matrices where the entries are given as simple functions of the mass
eigenstates and the diagonalizing transformation entries. Finally, motivated by
the possibility of vanishing zero Yukawa mass entries in several D-brane and
F-theory constructions due to the geometry of the internal space, we analyse in
detail all possible texture-zeroes mass matrices within the proposed new
context. These new texture-zeroes are compared to those existing in the
literature while D-brane inspired cases are worked out in detail.Comment: 58 pages, 7 figure
Exploring the polarization of gluons in the nucleon
We give an overview of the current status of investigations of the
polarization of gluons in the nucleon. We describe some of the physics of the
spin-dependent gluon parton distribution and its phenomenology in high-energy

Screening for candidate hepatic growth factors by selective portal infusion after canine Eck's fistula
Completely diverting portacaval shunt (Eck's fistula) in dogs causes hepatocyte atrophy, disruption of hepatocyte organelles, fatty infiltration and lowgrade hyperplasia. The effect of hepatic growth regulatory substances on these changes was assessed by constantly infusing test substances for four postoperative days after Eck's fistula into the detached left portal vein above the shunt. The directly infused left lobes were compared histopathologically with the untreated right lobes. In what has been called an hepatotrophic effect, stimulatory substances prevented the atrophy and increased hepatocyte mitoses. Of the hormones tested, only insulin was strongly hepatotrophic; T3 had a minor effect, and glucagon, prolactin, angiotensin II, vasopressin, norepinephrine and estradiol were inert. Insulinâlike growth factor, hepatic stimulatory substance, transforming growth factorâα and hepatocyte growth factor (also known as hematopoietin A) were powerfully hepatotrophic, but epidermal growth factor had a barely discernible effect. Transforming growth factorâÎČ was inhibitory, but tamoxifen, interleukinâ1 and interleukinâ2 had no effect. The hepatotrophic action of insulin was not altered when the insulin infusate was mixed with transforming growth factorâÎČ or tamoxifen. These experiments show the importance of in vivo in addition to in vitro testing of putative growth control factors. They illustrate how Eck's fistula model can be used to screen for such substances and possibly to help delineate their mechanisms of action. (HEPATOLOGY 1991;14:665â670.) Urodynamic Evaluation in Multiple System Atrophy: A Retrospective Cohort Study.
Background: Urological dysfunction in patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA) is one of the main manifestations of autonomic failure. Urodynamic examination is clinically relevant since underlying pathophysiology of lower urinary tract (LUT) dysfunction can be variable. Objective: Evaluation of the pathophysiology of urological symptoms and exploration of differences in urodynamic patterns of LUT dysfunction between MSA-P and MSA-C. Methods: Retrospective study of patients with possible and probable MSA who were referred for urodynamic studies between 2004 and 2019. Demographic data, medical history, physical examination and urodynamic studies assessing storage and voiding dysfunction were obtained. Results: Seventy-four patients were included in this study (MSA-P 64.9% n = 48; median age 62.5 (IQR 56.8-70) years). Detrusor overactivity during filling phase was noted in 58.1% (n = 43) of the patients. In the voiding phase, detrusor sphincter dyssynergia and detrusor underactivity were observed in 24.6% (n = 17) and in 62.1% (n = 41) of the patients, respectively. A postmicturition residual volume of over 100âml was present in 71.4% (n = 50) of the patients. Comparison of MSA subtypes showed weaker detrusor contractility in MSA-P compared to MSA-C [pdetQmax 26.2 vs. 34.4 cmH20, P =â0.04]. In 56.2% (n = 41) of patients pathophysiology of LUT dysfunction was deemed to be neurogenic and consistent with the diagnosis of MSA. In 35.6% (n = 26) urodynamic pattern suggested other urological co-morbidities. Conclusion: Urodynamic evaluation is an important tool to analyze the pattern of LUT dysfunction in MSA. Impaired detrusor contractility was seen more in MSA-P which needs to be investigated in further studies
Phenomenological analysis of D-brane Pati-Salam vacua
In the present work we perform a phenomenological analysis of the effective
low energy models with Pati-Salam (PS) gauge symmetry derived in the context of
D-branes. A main issue in these models arises from the fact that the
right-handed fermions and the PS-symmetry breaking Higgs field transform
identically under the PS symmetry, causing unnatural matter-Higgs mixing
effects. We argue that this problem could be solved in particular D-brane
setups where these fields arise in different intersections. We further observe
that whenever a large Higgs mass term is generated in a particular class of
mass spectra, a splitting mechanism -reminiscent of the doublet triplet
splitting- may protect the neutral Higgs components from a heavy mass term. We
analyze the implications of each individual representation which in principle
is available in these models in order to specify the minimal spectrum required
to build up a consistent PS model which reconciles the low energy data. A short
discussion is devoted on the effects of stringy instanton corrections,
particularly those generating missing Yukawa couplings and contributing to the
fermion mass textures. We discuss the correlations of the intersecting D-brane
spectra with those obtained from Gepner constructions and analyze the
superpotential, the resulting mass textures and the low energy implications of
