    'There's No Aphrodisiac Like Newtown': The Evolving Connection to Place in the Music of the Whitlams

    The Whitlams live in Newtown, Australia” is a byline that has appeared on each of the Sydney band’s albums since their beginnings in 1992. During this time the band has progressed from being on a small, independent label with a local audience to achieving national coverage and recognition, culminating with 8 ARIA award nominations in 1998. Of these they won three for Best Group, Song of the Year and Best Independent Release. Following this The Whitlams were signed to Warner Music (as it incorporated Festival Music), and have continued to make albums that still use inner city Sydney as a focus, but are pitched at a less localised audience. The Whitlams have used Sydney as a setting for major local events during this time, (the Sydney Olympics, State Government policies), but also just as a setting to express more personal issues (songs about relationships, aging). This paper will compare The Whitlams’ early releases to the music made after the band gained national attention, looking at how and why Sydney has remained a central theme, but has been expressed in different terms

    Estimating traffic operations at multi-lane roundabouts: a case study

    This paper addresses traffic modeling issues at urban multi-lane roundabouts where, despite circulating vehicles have priority, negotiation of the right-of-way can occur between antagonist traffic flows, as a result of minor drivers’ failing to obey the nominal operating rule (stop or yield control). Existing models for the estimation of operational performances have the shortcoming of not representing the interdependencies between entering and circulating vehicles at multi-lane roundabouts. An analytical capacity model derived from field observations was developed for this kind of intersections in a previous study. The complexity of the model lies in the difficulty of observing the behavioral parameters which are needed to implement the model. A procedure to get unknown behavioral parameters from traffic surveys is here proposed. This concerns saturation headways, often eluding direct observations due to rare occurrences of traffic conditions in which they can be observed. The unknown parameters were estimated through a regression model using on field data collected at a multi-lane roundabout. The presence of data correlation within a cluster of observations required the estimation of the regression parameters through a generalized estimating equation model. Results gave insight into the analysis of operations at multi-lane roundabouts, containing evidence to support assumptions made for the estimation of unobservable parameters

    Countdown and cult music television programmes: an Australian case study

    Music television programs, programs that focus on music for their core content, have been produced all over the world for all types of markets. However there remains little sustained work on them beyond studies of key production periods, franchise waves or biography-like narratives. This article shows that theories of Cult TV can be applied to music television programs to help explore this neglected form, as well as helping to expand Cult TV’s theoretical reach beyond its traditional fare of narrative driven, fiction series. This article offers 1970s and ‘80s Australian music television program Countdown as a prime example of Cult TV, first in the context of its initial production and consumption in 1970s and ‘80s Australia, and also in terms of its subsequent influence on contemporary audiences from a historical perspective.     Professional Background and Training of Physical Therapy Department Chairpersons

    This study examined the professional background of physical therapy department chairpersons, as well as training received for the position, and its importance. Survey methodology was utilized and the return rate was 62%. The average physical therapy department chairperson is a 52 years old female, tenured, associate professor with a doctorate degree. Chairpersons were on average, a clinician for 8 years prior to entering academia, had no intention of entering academia and thus took longer to achieve graduate degrees than other department chairpersons in the academy. Only twenty-six percent had a doctorate degree when entering academia. The majority had prior administrative experience, whether in the clinic or higher education. Most were internal candidates, and the largest percent of respondents were interested in a long-term career as a department chairperson. Few received formal training from their institutions. Forty-three percent sought outside training opportunities. The majority received informal training from the previous department chairperson. No training or minimal training was received in all of the fifty areas listed on the survey. However, 27 of the 50 areas were rated moderately to highly important. When respondents were asked to identify the most important areas for training, twelve areas were ranked above the rest. Leadership, institutional policies and procedures, promotion and tenure, team building and budgeting were the top five training areas.It is recommended that physical therapy department chairpersons seek ongoing, internal and external training, with mentorship from other chairpersons. The areas most important to chairpersons should be addressed. Training could be provided at the institutional level, especially policies and procedures. However, local, regional or state consortiums could provide additional training. National training for issues related to the profession of physical therapy is available and efforts to make the training more effective should be considered

    Development of FEA models to study contusion patterning in layered tissue and the shaft loaded blister test

    In the natural world there is no such thing as a perfectly sharp edge, either thru wear or machining imprecation at the macroscopic scale all edges have curvature. This curvature can have significant impact when comparing results with theory. Both numerical and analytic models for the contact of an object with a sharp edge predict infinite stresses which are not present in the physical world. It is for this reason that the influence of rounded edges must be studied to better understand how they affect model response. Using a commercial available finite element package this influence will be studied in two different problems; how this edge geometry effects the shape of a contusion (bruise) and the accuracy of analytic models for the shaft loaded blister test (SLBT). The contusion study presents work that can be used to enable medical examiners to better determine if the object in question was capable of causing the contusions present. Using a simple layered tissue model which represents a generic location on the human body, a sweep of objects with different edges properties is studied using a simple strain based injury metric. This analysis aims to examine the role that contact area and energy have on the formation, location, and shape of the resulting contusion. In studying the SLBT with finite element analysis and cohesive zone modeling, the assessment of various analytic models will provide insight into how to accurately measure the fracture energy for both the simulation and experiment. This provides insight into the interactions between a film, the substrate it is bonded to and the loading plug. In addition, parametric studies are used to examine potential experimental designs and enable future work in this field. The final product of this project provides tools and insight into future study of the effect rounded edges have on contact and this work enables for more focused studies within desired regimes of interest
