Weakly correlated electrons on a square lattice: a renormalization group theory
We study the weakly interacting Hubbard model on the square lattice using a
one-loop renormalization group approach. The transition temperature T_c between
the metallic and (nearly) ordered states is found. In the parquet regime, (T_c
>> |mu|), the dominant correlations at temperatures below T_c are
antiferromagnetic while in the BCS regime (T_c << |mu|) at T_c the d-wave

Adverse Moisture Events Predict Seasonal Abundance of Lyme Disease Vector Ticks (\u3cem\u3eIxodes scapularis\u3c/em\u3e)
Background
Lyme borreliosis (LB) is the most commonly reported vector-borne disease in north temperate regions worldwide, affecting an estimated 300,000 people annually in the United States alone. The incidence of LB is correlated with human exposure to its vector, the blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis). To date, attempts to model tick encounter risk based on environmental parameters have been equivocal. Previous studies have not considered (1) the differences between relative humidity (RH) in leaf litter and at weather stations, (2) the RH threshold that affects nymphal blacklegged tick survival, and (3) the time required below the threshold to induce mortality. We clarify the association between environmental moisture and tick survival by presenting a significant relationship between the total number of tick adverse moisture events (TAMEs - calculated as microclimatic periods below a RH threshold) and tick abundance each year.
Methods
We used a 14-year continuous statewide tick surveillance database and corresponding weather data from Rhode Island (RI), USA, to assess the effects of TAMEs on nymphal populations of I. scapularis. These TAMEs were defined as extended periods of time (\u3e8 h below 82% RH in leaf litter). We fit a sigmoid curve comparing weather station data to those collected by loggers placed in tick habitats to estimate RH experienced by nymphal ticks, and compiled the number of historical TAMEs during the 14-year record.
Results
The total number of TAMEs in June of each year was negatively related to total seasonal nymphal tick densities, suggesting that sub-threshold humidity episodes \u3e8 h in duration naturally lowered nymphal blacklegged tick abundance. Furthermore, TAMEs were positively related to the ratio of tick abundance early in the season when compared to late season, suggesting that lower than average tick abundance for a given year resulted from tick mortality and not from other factors.
Conclusions
Our results clarify the mechanism by which environmental moisture affects blacklegged tick populations, and offers the possibility to more accurately predict tick abundance and human LB incidence. We describe a method to forecast LB risk in endemic regions and identify the predictive role of microclimatic moisture conditions on tick encounter risk
A variety of environmentally persistent chemicals, including some phthalate plasticizers, are weakly estrogenic
Sewage, a complex mixture of organic and inorganic chemicals, is considered to be a major source of environmental pollution. A random screen of 20 organic man-made chemicals present in liquid effluents revealed that half appeared able to interact with the estradiol receptor. This was demonstrated by their ability to inhibit binding of 17 beta-estradiol to the fish estrogen receptor. Further studies, using mammalian estrogen screens in vitro, revealed that the two phthalate esters butylbenzyl phthalate (BBP) and di-n-butylphthalate (DBP) and a food antioxidant, butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) were estrogenic; however, they were all less estrogenic than the environmental estrogen octylphenol. Phthalate esters, used in the production of various plastics (including PVC), are among the most common industrial chemicals. Their ubiquity in the environment and tendency to bioconcentrate in animal fat are well known. Neither BBP nor DBP were able to act as antagonists, indicating that, in the presence of endogenous estrogens, their overall effect would be cumulative. Recently, it has been suggested that environmental estrogens may be etiological agents in several human diseases, including disorders of the male reproductive tract and breast and testicular cancers. The current finding that some phthalate compounds and some food additives are weakly estrogenic in vitro, needs to be supported by further studies on their effects in vivo before any conclusions can be made regarding their possible role in the development of these condition
Dynamic Exponent of t-J and t-J-W Model
Drude weight of optical conductivity is calculated at zero temperature by
exact diagonalization for the two-dimensional t-J model with the two-particle
term, . For the ordinary t-J model with =0, the scaling of the Drude
weight for small doping concentration is
obtained, which indicates anomalous dynamic exponent =4 of the Mott
transition. When is switched on, the dynamic exponent recovers its
conventional value =2. This corresponds to an incoherent-to-coherent

Woodland Type and Spatial Distribution of Nymphal Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae)
Spatial distribution patterns of black-legged ticks, Ixodes scapularis, in deciduous and coniferous woodlands were studied by sampling ticks in different woodland types and at sites from which deer had been excluded and by quantifying movement patterns of tick host animals (mammals and birds) at the Lighthouse Tract, Fire Island, NY, from 1994 to 2000. Densities of nymphal ticks were greater in deciduous than coniferous woods in 3 of 7 yr. Only engorged ticks survived the winter, and overwintering survival of engorged larvae in experimental enclosures did not differ between deciduous and coniferous woods. Nymphs were not always most abundant in the same forest type as they had been as larvae, and the habitat shift between life stages differed in direction in different years. Therefore, forest type by itself did not account for tick distribution patterns. Nymphal densities were lower where deer had been excluded compared with areas with deer present for 3 yr after exclusion, suggesting that movement patterns of vertebrate hosts influenced tick distribution, but nymphal densities increased dramatically in one of the enclosures in the fourth year. Therefore, movements of ticks on animal hosts apparently contribute substantially to tick spatial distribution among woodland types, but the factor(s) that determine spatial distribution of nymphal I. scapularis shift from year to year

Influence of Type of Cigarette on Peripheral versus Central Lung Cancer
Objectives: Adenocarcinoma has replaced squamous cell carcinoma as the most common cell type of lung cancer in the United States. It has been proposed that this shift is due to the increased use of filter and lower-tar cigarettes, resulting in increased delivery of smoke to peripheral regions of the lungs, where adenocarcinoma usually occurs. We reviewed radiologic data to evaluate the hypothesis that tumors in smokers of cigarettes with lower-tar yield are more likely to occur peripherally than tumors in smokers of higher-yield cigarettes.
Methods: At two urban academic medical centers, we reviewed computed tomographic scans, chest radiographs, and medical records to assign tumor location (peripheral or central) for 330 smokers diagnosed with carcinoma of the lung between 1993 and 1999. We compared the proportion of tumors in a peripheral versus central location by lifetime filter use and average lifetime tar rating (<21 and ≥21 mg).
Results: Tumor location (69% peripheral and 31% central) was unrelated to cigarette filter use. Smokers of cigarettes with lower-tar ratings were more likely than those with higher ratings to have peripheral rather than central tumors (odds ratio, 1.76; 95% confidence interval, 0.89-3.47). When restricted to subjects with adenocarcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma, the odds ratio (95% confidence interval) was 2.31 (1.05-5.08).
Conclusions: Among cigarette smokers with lung cancer, use of cigarettes with lower-tar yield was associated with preferential occurrence of tumors in peripheral sites. Our findings support the hypothesis that changes in smoking associated with lower-tar cigarettes have led to a shift in the location of smoking-related lung cancer
Superconductivity of the spin ladder system: Are the superconducting pairing and the spin-gap formation of the same origin?
Pressure-induced superconductivity in a spin-ladder cuprate
SrCaCuO has not been studied on a microscopic level so
far although the superconductivity was already discovered in 1996. We have
improved high-pressure technique with using a large high-quality crystal, and
succeeded in studying the superconductivity using Cu nuclear magnetic
resonance (NMR). We found that anomalous metallic state reflecting the
spin-ladder structure is realized and the superconductivity possesses a
s-wavelike character in the meaning that a finite gap exists in the
quasi-particle excitation: At pressure of 3.5GPa we observed two excitation
modes in the normal state from the relaxation rate . One gives rise
to an activation-type component in , and the other -linear
component linking directly with the superconductivity. This gapless mode likely
arises from free motion of holon-spinon bound states appearing by hole doping,
and the pairing of them likely causes the superconductivity.Comment: to be published in Phys. Rev. Let
Twitter-based analysis of the dynamics of collective attention to political parties
Large-scale data from social media have a significant potential to describe
complex phenomena in real world and to anticipate collective behaviors such as
information spreading and social trends. One specific case of study is
represented by the collective attention to the action of political parties. Not
surprisingly, researchers and stakeholders tried to correlate parties' presence
on social media with their performances in elections. Despite the many efforts,
results are still inconclusive since this kind of data is often very noisy and
significant signals could be covered by (largely unknown) statistical
fluctuations. In this paper we consider the number of tweets (tweet volume) of
a party as a proxy of collective attention to the party, identify the dynamics
of the volume, and show that this quantity has some information on the
elections outcome. We find that the distribution of the tweet volume for each
party follows a log-normal distribution with a positive autocorrelation of the
volume over short terms, which indicates the volume has large fluctuations of
the log-normal distribution yet with a short-term tendency. Furthermore, by
measuring the ratio of two consecutive daily tweet volumes, we find that the
evolution of the daily volume of a party can be described by means of a
geometric Brownian motion (i.e., the logarithm of the volume moves randomly
with a trend). Finally, we determine the optimal period of averaging tweet
volume for reducing fluctuations and extracting short-term tendencies. We
conclude that the tweet volume is a good indicator of parties' success in the
elections when considered over an optimal time window. Our study identifies the
statistical nature of collective attention to political issues and sheds light
