    Illustrated Mark: Aspects of Secrecy

    Get PDF
One main theme within the Gospel of Mark is that of secrecy. Jesus does not permit demons to let his identity be known as he performs miracles and orders people not to tell. He also teaches in the form of parables, only revealing their meaning to his disciples. Despite Jesus\u27 orders for people not to spread the word about his healings and miracles, the news is spread and a large crowd constantly follows Jesus. However, Jesus must reach the cross and fulfill his mission. My illustrated version of Mark highlights these areas of secrecy. Each page symbolizes Jesus\u27 journey to the cross as many people come to follow him and spread news of his miracles. As the crowd surrounding Jesus grows, so do the decorations and colors on the pages. Nearing the passion narrative, the color of the pages elevates as so many have come to know about Jesus and Mark\u27s emphasis on the crucifixion

Dana Gioia\u27s controversial book Can Poetry Matter? challenges poets to write in traditional forms to expand poetry\u27s readership beyond the subculture of the university. In response to Gioia\u27s position, my thesis considers the mind-numbing trends in today\u27s entertainment and places importance on innovation to suggest that there is potential danger in Gioia\u27s call to conform. If the artists of a society mold their work like a commodity to be consumed by the masses, this lack of originality could stint creative progress and hinder, rather than encourage, readers\u27 interests. Gioia\u27s position is currently a reference point for contemporary debates about poetry and society. My position offers a new suggestion to general readers: put forth individual effort and pursue professional instruction to learn how to read poetry in order to acquire a broader appreciation for the ways poetic form enriches communication. Furthermore, what is classified as difficult poetry depends upon the canon of a culture. Writers should not be required to reach a set audience or limit their innovatio

Change Is Conflict: Exploring Relationships Between Preferred Cognitive Styles and Conflict Management Styles of University Administrators at a Large Flagship University

As pressures continue for colleges and universities to find new ways of doing business, the calls for change heighten and the potential for conflict ensues. The purpose of the research study was to explore change as conflict via an exploration of organizational change related to preferred cognitive style, as measured by the Kirton Adaption-Innovation (KAI) instrument, and conflict management style, as measured by the Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory-II (ROCI-II) instrument. The two instruments were administered to 72 university administrators at a large flagship university. The results indicate that the preferred cognitive style of university administrators is not significantly different from that of the general population. In addition, there were no statistically significant differences in style when comparing functional reporting area, gender, or education level. University administrators were found to prefer using the integrating conflict management style, followed by the compromising and obliging styles. Dominating and avoiding styles were the least used by university administrators. An understanding of cognitive styles and conflict management styles may help university administrators to be more self-aware and to know when each style is appropriate for use, particularly as it relates to problem-solving in teams with a diversity of styles to manage change and enhance organizational effectiveness

Teaching the concept of precycling: a campaign and evaluation

Journal ArticleABSTRACT: Precycling, or purchasing wisely to reduce waste, is the EPA-preferred way to conserve resources and extend landfill life. A 3-month campaign of radio, television, and in-store advertising was effective at teaching the concept of precycling. After the campaign, telephone interviews indicated that 16% of the sample could correctly define the term, a 9% increase over the first survey. The survey results indicate that at least 65,000 citizens of Salt Lake County had probably learned the concept from the ad campaign. Given that the term had not come into popular use at the time of the advertising, it is unlikely that individuals had learned the term from another source. Furthermore, there was a significant association between seeing the ads and correctly defining precycling

Spatial Analysis of Membership and Success in the Kingdom of Ansteorra

Humans study success in order to identify habits or traits of successful people and to acquire such traits. This thesis is an extension of that activity, being a study of a world-wide medieval recreation group (the Society for Creative Anachronism), focusing on one particular region (the Kingdom of Ansteorra), with the twin goals to determine if there is a spatial relationship to becoming successful and if there are any spatial patterns in membership, both demographically and geographically. This study is a foray into the search for success, and attempts to quantify what factors, especially those of a geographical nature, contribute heavily to success in the kingdom. By identifying successful people in Ansteorra (peers and past Crowns) and comparing them to their location, any geographical factors to success can be revealed. Once revealed, these factors can be utilized by new members or those seeking improvement, in an effort to become more successful. The results of this thesis were mixed. For some of the questions, there was a spatial relationship to success (becoming a peer or winning Crown Tournament), and in others there was not. There does appear to be a geographical relationship to membership and winning Crown Tournament, but not necessarily to being successful or receiving awards.Department of Geograph
