The Galactic disk mass-budget : II. Brown dwarf mass-function and density
In this paper, we extend the calculations conducted previously in the stellar
regime to determine the brown dwarf IMF in the Galactic disk. We perform Monte
Carlo calculations taking into account the brown dwarf formation rate, spatial
distribution and binary fraction. Comparison with existing surveys seems to
exclude a power-law MF as steep as the one determined in the stellar regime
below 1 \msol and tends to favor a more flatish behaviour. Comparison with
methane-dwarf detections tends to favor an eventually decreasing form like the
lognormal or the more general exponential distributions determined in the
previous paper. We calculate predicting brown dwarf counts in near-infrared
color diagrams and brown dwarf discovery functions. These calculations yield
the presently most accurate determination of the brown dwarf census in the
Galactic disk. The brown dwarf number density is comparable to the stellar one,
pc. The corresponding brown dwarf mass
density, however, represents only about 10% of the stellar contribution, i.e.
\rho_{BD}\simle 5.0\times 10^{-3} \mvol. Adding up the local stellar density
determined previously yields the density of star-like objects, stars and brown
dwarfs, in the solar neighborhood \rho_\odot \approx 5.0\times 10^{-2} \mvol.Comment: 39 pages, Latex file, uses aasms4.sty, to be published in ApJ,

Nonperturbative Functional Renormalization Group for Random Field Models. III: Superfield formalism and ground-state dominance
We reformulate the nonperturbative functional renormalization group for the
random field Ising model in a superfield formalism, extending the
supersymmetric description of the critical behavior of the system first
proposed by Parisi and Sourlas [Phys. Rev. Lett. 43, 744 (1979)]. We show that
the two crucial ingredients for this extension are the introduction of a
weighting factor, which accounts for ground-state dominance when multiple
metastable states are present, and of multiple copies of the original system,
which allows one to access the full functional dependence of the cumulants of
the renormalized disorder and to describe rare events. We then derive exact
renormalization group equations for the flow of the renormalized cumulants
associated with the effective average action.Comment: 28 page
Equation of state of classical Coulomb plasma mixtures
We develop analytic approximations of thermodynamic functions of fully
ionized nonideal electron-ion plasma mixtures. In the regime of strong Coulomb
coupling, we use our previously developed analytic approximations for the free
energy of one-component plasmas with rigid and polarizable electron background
and apply the linear mixing rule (LMR). Other thermodynamic functions are
obtained through analytic derivation of this free energy. In order to obtain an
analytic approximation for the intermediate coupling and transition to the
Debye-Hueckel limit, we perform hypernetted-chain calculations of the free
energy, internal energy, and pressure for mixtures of different ion species and
introduce a correction to the LMR, which allows a smooth transition from strong
to weak Coulomb coupling in agreement with the numerical results.Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures; Phys. Rev. E. In v.2 after proofreading, minor

Microfield distributions in strongly coupled two-component plasmas
The electric microfield distribution at charged particles is studied for
two-component electron-ion plasmas using molecular dynamics simulation and
theoretical models. The particles are treated within classical statistical
mechanics using an electron-ion Coulomb potential regularized at distances less
than the de Broglie length to take into account the quantum-diffraction
effects. The potential-of-mean-force (PMF) approximation is deduced from a
canonical ensemble formulation. The resulting probability density of the
electric microfield satisfies exactly the second-moment sum rule without the
use of adjustable parameters. The correlation functions between the charged
radiator and the plasma ions and electrons are calculated using molecular
dynamics simulations and the hypernetted-chain approximation for a
two-component plasma. It is shown that the agreement between the theoretical
models for the microfield distributions and the simulations is quite good in
general.Comment: 18 figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev.
Interrelationships Within the Bacterial Flora of the Female Genital Tract
Analysis of 240 consecutive vaginal swabs using the compatibility profile technique revealed that only 2 bacteria have the ability to be a sole isolate and as such a candidate to be a major aerobic regulator of the bacterial flora of the female genital tract (BFFGT). Compatibility profiles of Lactobacillus and Gardnerella vaginalis have shown that these organisms shared compatibility profiling for the majority of the normal bacterial constituents of the female genital tract. Dominance disruption appears to come from the addition of compatible co-isolates and presumed loss of numerical superiority. These phenomena appear to be the keys to reregulation of BFFGT. Lactobacillus appears to be the major regulator of both G. vaginalis and anaerobic bacteria. When additional organisms are added to the bacterial flora, they may add to or partially negate the inhibitory influence of Lactobacillus on the BFFGT. Inhibitor interrelationships appear to exist between coagulase-negative staphylococci and Staphylococcus aureus and the group B streptococci (GBS) and other beta hemolytic streptococci. Facilitating interrelationships appear to exist between S. aureus and the GBS and selected Enterobacteriaceae
Monte Carlo simulations of the screening potential of the Yukawa one-component plasma
A Monte Carlo scheme to sample the screening potential H(r) of Yukawa plasmas
notably at short distances is presented. This scheme is based on an importance
sampling technique. Comparisons with former results for the Coulombic
one-component plasma are given. Our Monte Carlo simulations yield an accurate
estimate of H(r) as well for short range and long range interparticle
distances.Comment: to be published in Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Genera
