    The siphonaceous green alga Penicillus capitatus Lamarck is a common macroalga of the Carribean and Gulf of Mexico (Littler & Littler 2000). This shaving brush-shaped macroalga was a common inhabitant of the Lower Laguna Madre Texas (LLM) until about 40 years ago when the population was decimated following a salinity decline in the fall of 1959, another salinity reduction due to Hurricane Carla in 1961, and finally a severe freeze in 1962 (Sorensen 1963). Since that time, there have been no reports of P. capitatus in the LLM. During a reconnaissance trip in July 2006, a small population was found in the southern portion of the LLM. The species descriptions by Taylor (1960) and Sorensen (1979) were used in the identification of specimens. Herbarium specimens have been deposited in the herbaria of The University of Texas-Pan American Coastal Studies Laboratory (accession number C012), and the University of Texas at Austin Marine Science Institute

    A comparison of salinity effects from hurricanes Dolly (2008) and Alex (2010) in a Texas lagoon system.Hurricanes are not uncommon along the Gulf of Mexico coast, but there are few studies of the effects they have on coastal embayments. Hurricanes Dolly (2008) and Alex (2010) were both Category 2 storms affecting the Lower Laguna Madre (LLM) of Texas. Surveys were performed to assess poststorm water quality after landfall of both storms at up to 18 sample stations. The main difference between storm effects was salinity reduction because of stormwater input from the watershed. Effects from Hurricane Dolly were of short duration and small magnitude, whereas the effects from Hurricane Alex were extensive and lasted more than a month. Differences in spatial patterns in salinity were significantly more pronounced across the LLM than were temporal differences. Precipitation of 50–100 cm caused stormwater discharge to exceed 1000 m s−1 to the LLM during the Alex event and depressed salinity over more than three-fourths (ca. 500 km2) of the estuary for 2 months. Storm-related effects on water-column physiochemistry were persistently lowest near freshwater drains (Arroyo Colorado). Salinity remained less than 5 for more than 2 months during the Alex freshet. Freshwater input from Hurricane Dolly was relatively minor because the storm precipitation was largely restricted to the small Arroyo Colorado watershed. Effects from Alex were delayed but were greater because of the bulk of the precipitation falling in the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo drainage basin in MĂ©xico. The greatest impact from that freshwater disturbance was the loss of seagrasses after prolonged exposure to hyposalinity. Hurricanes Dolly and Alex both affected the LLM but with contrasting impacts that reflected spatial and meteorological differences between the two storms

    Pilot Testing Behavior Therapy for Chronic Tic Disorders in Neurology and Developmental Pediatrics Clinics

    Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT) is an efficacious treatment with limited regional availability. As neurology and pediatric clinics are often the first point of therapeutic contact for individuals with tics, the present study assessed preliminary treatment response, acceptability, and feasibility of an abbreviated version, modified for child neurology and developmental pediatrics clinics. Fourteen youth (9-17) with Tourette disorder across 2 child neurology clinics and one developmental pediatrics clinic participated in a small case series. Clinician-rated tic severity (Yale Global Tic Severity Scale) decreased from pre- to posttreatment, z = –2.0, P \u3c .05, r = –.48, as did tic-related impairment, z = –2.4, P \u3c .05, r = –.57. Five of the 9 completers (56%) were classified as treatment responders. Satisfaction ratings were high, and therapeutic alliance ratings were moderately high. Results provide guidance for refinement of this modified CBIT protocol

    Empirical Bayes accomodation of batch-effects in microarray data using identical replicate reference samples: application to RNA expression profiling of blood from Duchenne muscular dystrophy patients

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Non-biological experimental error routinely occurs in microarray data collected in different batches. It is often impossible to compare groups of samples from independent experiments because batch effects confound true gene expression differences. Existing methods can correct for batch effects only when samples from all biological groups are represented in every batch.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In this report we describe a generalized empirical Bayes approach to correct for cross-experimental batch effects, allowing direct comparisons of gene expression between biological groups from independent experiments. The proposed experimental design uses identical reference samples in each batch in every experiment. These reference samples are from the same tissue as the experimental samples. This design with tissue matched reference samples allows a gene-by-gene correction to be performed using fewer arrays than currently available methods. We examine the effects of non-biological variation within a single experiment and between experiments.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Batch correction has a significant impact on which genes are identified as differentially regulated. Using this method, gene expression in the blood of patients with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is shown to differ for hundreds of genes when compared to controls. The numbers of specific genes differ depending upon whether between experiment and/or between batch corrections are performed.</p

    Study protocol: A cross-sectional survey of clinicians to identify barriers to clinical practice guideline implementation in the assessment and treatment of persistent tic disorders

    INTRODUCTION: Eight members of the International Parkinson\u27s Disease and Movement Disorders Society Tic and Tourette Syndrome Study Group formed a subcommittee to discuss further barriers to practice guideline implementation. Based on expert opinion and literature review, the consensus was that practice variations continue to be quite broad and that many barriers in different clinical settings might negatively influence the adoption of the American Academy of Neurology and the European Society for the Study of Tourette Syndrome published guidelines. OBJECTIVES: 1) To identify how clinical practices diverge from the existing American Academy of Neurology and European Society for the Study of Tourette Syndrome guidelines, and 2) to identify categories of barriers leading to these clinical care gaps. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This article presents the methodology of a planned cross-sectional survey amongst healthcare professionals routinely involved in the clinical care of patients with persistent tic disorders, aimed at 1) identifying how practices diverge from the published guidelines; and 2) identifying categories of barriers leading to these clinical care gaps. Purposeful sampling methods are used to identify and recruit critical persistent tic disorders stakeholders. The analysis will use descriptive statistics

    The Rest-Frame Optical Spectrum of MS 1512-cB58

    Moderate resolution, near-IR spectroscopy of MS1512-cB58 is presented, obtained during commissioning of the the Near IR Spectrometer (NIRSPEC) on the Keck II telescope. The strong lensing of this z=2.72 galaxy by the foreground cluster MS1512+36 makes it the best candidate for detailed study of the rest-frame optical properties of Lyman Break Galaxies. A redshift of z=2.7290+/-0.0007 is inferred from the emission lines, in contrast to the z=2.7233 calculated from UV observations of interstellar absorption lines. Using the Balmer line ratios, we find an extinction of E(B-V)=0.27. Using the line strengths, we infer an SFR=620+/-18 Msun/yr (H_0=75, q_0=0.1, Lambda =0), a factor of 2 higher than that measured from narrow-band imaging observations of the galaxy, but a factor of almost 4 lower than the SFR inferred from the UV continuum luminosity. The width of the Balmer lines yields a mass of M_vir=1.2x10^10 Msun. We find that the oxygen abundance is 1/3 solar, in good agreement with other estimates of the metallicity. However, we infer a high nitrogen abundance, which may argue for the presence of an older stellar population.Comment: 14 pages, including 3 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

    Limits on the ultra-bright Fast Radio Burst population from the CHIME Pathfinder

    We present results from a new incoherent-beam Fast Radio Burst (FRB) search on the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) Pathfinder. Its large instantaneous field of view (FoV) and relative thermal insensitivity allow us to probe the ultra-bright tail of the FRB distribution, and to test a recent claim that this distribution's slope, Î±â‰Ąâˆ’âˆ‚log⁥N∂log⁥S\alpha\equiv-\frac{\partial \log N}{\partial \log S}, is quite small. A 256-input incoherent beamformer was deployed on the CHIME Pathfinder for this purpose. If the FRB distribution were described by a single power-law with α=0.7\alpha=0.7, we would expect an FRB detection every few days, making this the fastest survey on sky at present. We collected 1268 hours of data, amounting to one of the largest exposures of any FRB survey, with over 2.4\,×\times\,105^5\,deg2^2\,hrs. Having seen no bursts, we have constrained the rate of extremely bright events to < ⁣13<\!13\,sky−1^{-1}\,day−1^{-1} above ∌\sim\,220(τ/ms)\sqrt{(\tau/\rm ms)} Jy\,ms for τ\tau between 1.3 and 100\,ms, at 400--800\,MHz. The non-detection also allows us to rule out αâ‰Č0.9\alpha\lesssim0.9 with 95%\% confidence, after marginalizing over uncertainties in the GBT rate at 700--900\,MHz, though we show that for a cosmological population and a large dynamic range in flux density, α\alpha is brightness-dependent. Since FRBs now extend to large enough distances that non-Euclidean effects are significant, there is still expected to be a dearth of faint events and relative excess of bright events. Nevertheless we have constrained the allowed number of ultra-intense FRBs. While this does not have significant implications for deeper, large-FoV surveys like full CHIME and APERTIF, it does have important consequences for other wide-field, small dish experiments

    Influenza A (H3) illness and viral aerosol shedding from symptomatic naturally infected and experimentally infected cases

    BackgroundIt has long been known that nasal inoculation with influenza A virus produces asymptomatic to febrile infections. Uncertainty persists about whether these infections are sufficiently similar to natural infections for studying human‐to‐human transmission.MethodsWe compared influenza A viral aerosol shedding from volunteers nasally inoculated with A/Wisconsin/2005 (H3N2) and college community adults naturally infected with influenza A/H3N2 (2012‐2013), selected for influenza‐like illness with objectively measured fever or a positive Quidel QuickVue A&B test. Propensity scores were used to control for differences in symptom presentation observed between experimentally and naturally infected groups.ResultsEleven (28%) experimental and 71 (86%) natural cases shed into fine particle aerosols (P [less than] .001). The geometric mean (geometric standard deviation) for viral positive fine aerosol samples from experimental and natural cases was 5.1E + 3 (4.72) and 3.9E + 4 (15.12) RNA copies/half hour, respectively. The 95th percentile shedding rate was 2.4 log10 greater for naturally infected cases (1.4E + 07 vs 7.4E + 04). Certain influenza‐like illness‐related symptoms were associated with viral aerosol shedding. The almost complete lack of symptom severity distributional overlap between groups did not support propensity score–adjusted shedding comparisons. ConclusionsDue to selection bias, the natural and experimental infections had limited symptom severity distributional overlap precluding valid, propensity score–adjusted comparison. Relative to the symptomatic naturally infected cases, where high aerosol shedders were found, experimental cases did not produce high aerosol shedders. Studying the frequency of aerosol shedding at the highest observed levels in natural infections without selection on symptoms or fever would support helpful comparisons

    Experimental Bounds on Masses and Fluxes of Nontopological Solitons

    We have re-analyzed the results of various experiments which were not originally interested as searches for the Q-ball or the Fermi-ball. Based on these analyses, in addition to the available data on Q-balls, we obtained rather stringent bounds on flux, mass and typical energy scale of Q-balls as well as Fermi-balls. In case these nontopological solitons are the main component of the dark matter of the Galaxy, we found that only such solitons with very large quantum numbers are allowed. We also estimate how sensitive future experiments will be in the search for Q-balls and Fermi-balls.Comment: 19 pages, 7 eps figures, RevTeX, psfig.st
