Polychaete zonation and its relation to algal distribution down a vertical cliff in the western Mediterranean (Italy): a structural analysis

none1noThe zonation of polychaetes down a vertical cliff (0-5 m in depth) at Cape Romito, Leghorn, Italy, was investigated. The structural organization of the community changed with depth. A community typical of photophilic environments was found in the superficial zone (0-2 m), while in the deeper zone (3-5 m), a more diversified community characterized by species typical of sciaphilic environments was present. At the surface (0 m) the community was very poor in species and individuals and thus probably corresponds to the midlittoral fringe. In fact, some species typical of the midlittoral zone were found. This distribution pattern was constant for samples taken in February and August 1985. The distribution of polychaetes was closely related to that found for macroalgae. It is hypothesized that algae condition the substratum and that this is the main factor responsible for the zonation of polychaetes. © 1988.openGiangrande A.Giangrande, A

Poor written and oral text comprehension in third grade children. A multiple case study

In this multiple case study we analyzed oral text comprehension, reading profiles and underlying cognitive abilities (attention, executive functions, working memory, narrative memory, rapid automatized naming and vocabulary) of 9 children identified as poor written text comprehenders after a school screening on 75 third grade children. Four out of the 9 children were named Language-Minority (L-M) children, since they had immigrant parents. The remaining 5 children were born in Italy from Italian parents. The comparisons of the two subgroups suggested that the lexical route of reading was particularly impaired in the L-M subgroup and that written text comprehension was weakened by restricted vocabulary which, in turn, was not supported by efficient phonological short-term memory. In a second type of data analysis we examined the individual profiles of the 9 children, irrespective of their belonging to the L-M or Italian subgroups, and identified different patterns of associations among reading performance, written text comprehension and oral text comprehension. The findings showed that poor text comprehension always co-occurred with word and/or text reading difficulties which, in turn, were associated to slow naming and weak verbal working memory. Moreover, when children had both written and oral text comprehension difficulties, not only verbal working memory was impaired but also narrative memory, suggesting a weakness in the episodic buffer (Baddeley 2000; 2010). The implications of poor working memory associated to slow naming and/or weak episodic buffer for text comprehension are discusse

Examining the Impact of Educational Modules on Self-care, Burnout, and Professional Impairment on Graduate And Medical Students

Graduate school is a time of academic rigor, personal growth, stress, change, fear, and confrontation. It is important for medical and other graduate students to prepare themselves to serve and treat their patients effectively. An important part of this involves learning skills to better manage challenges and demands through ongoing self-care. However, little research has examined what knowledge students have of self-care strategies and burnout or whether education about these constructs is lacking in higher education. The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of self-care and impairment modules for medical and other graduate students enrolled in an interprofessional education (IPE). Graduate physician assistant, psychology, and mental health counseling students and osteopathic medical students completed a series of online questionnaires, including a demographics survey, a burnout measure, and a self-care assessment measure, before and after the study. A repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) and multiple regressions were utilized to examine the relationship between self-care and burnout, as well as correlations between group membership, symptoms of burnout, and use of self-care over time. There were varying levels of significance of changes in self-care practices and levels of burnout, specifically during exposure to educational modules on impaired professionalism and self-care. Future studies may wish to utilize a larger sample and focus on education about specific selfcare practices. A better understanding of medical and other graduate student burnout may improve student wellness initiatives and assist students in becoming more empathic and self-aware practitioners, with a decreased risk for burnout as future clinicians
