Consumption and Initial Mortgage Conditions: Evidence From Survey Data

Economic theory predicts that the consumption path of unconstrained homeowners responds to the interest rate, while the consumption path of credit constrained homeowners is determined by the size and timing of payments (mortgage maturity). We exploit the rapid expansion of mortgage markets during the last decade in Spain and a very detailed survey on household .nances to estimate group-speci.c consumption responses to changes in the credit conditions. Our estimates suggest that the consumption of households headed by an individual with high school responds more to mortgage maturity than to the interest rate spread. The consumption of the rest of indebted households is insensitive to loan maturity. Those results are con.rmed when we instrument loan maturity exploiting the fact that banks are reluctant to o¤er contracts with age at maturity above 65. An interpretation of those results is that households headed by middle education individuals, 8% of our sample, behave as credit constrained.Credit constraints, mortgages, household consumption

We exploit the rapid expansion of mortgage markets during the last decade in Spain and a very detailed survey on household finances to estimate group-specific consumption responses to changes in the credit conditions. Our estimates suggest that the consumption of households headed by an individual with high school respondsmore to mortgage maturity than to the interest rate spread. The consumption of the rest of indebted households is insensitive to loan maturity. Those results are confirmed when we instrument loan maturity exploiting the fact that banks are reluctant to offer contracts with age at maturity above 65. An interpretation of those results is that households headed by middle education individuals, 8% of our sample, behave as credit constrained.

Different neurological outcome of liver transplantation for Wilson's disease in two homozygotic twins

Wilson's disease is a genetic disorder characterized by accumulation of copper in many organs and tissues. Phenotypic manifestations are wide-ranging from neuropsychiatric disorders, to severe liver disease requiring liver transplantation. Clinical presentation is not often related to the genetic defect and siblings may have different type of disease. Liver transplantation is indicated for all patients with Wilson's disease and decompensated liver cirrhosis unresponsive to medical therapy, but its efficacy in resolving the neurological symptoms is still controversial, because as far now, very different outcomes have been reported. We describe here on the exceptional case of two homozygotic twins, both with liver cirrhosis due to Wilson's disease, one of them with severe neuropsychiatric involvement, who both underwent liver transplantation and subsequently had very different outcome despite same genetic background. The presence of neurological clinical manifestations in Wilson's disease should recommend caution indicating liver transplantation, because irreversible brain damage may exist

The concept of Quality of Life in organ transplantation

    No full text
The goal of organ transplantation is not only to ensure the survival of individuals with end-stage heart, lung, liver, kidney, pancreas, and small bowel diseases, but also to offer patients the health they enjoyed before the disease, achieving a good balance between the functional efficacy of the graft and the patient's psychological and physical integrity. Quality of life (QoL) assessments are used to evaluate the physical, psychological, and social domains of health, seen as distinct areas that are influenced by a person's experiences, beliefs, expectations, and perceptions, and QoL is emerging as a new medical indicator in transplantation medicine too
