    A first experimental test of de Broglie-Bohm theory against standard quantum mechanics

    De Broglie - Bohm (dBB) theory is a deterministic theory, built for reproducing almost all Quantum Mechanics (QM) predictions, where position plays the role of a hidden variable. It was recently shown that different coincidence patterns are predicted by QM and dBB when a double slit experiment is realised under specific conditions and, therefore, an experiment can test the two theories. In this letter we present the first realisation of such a double slit experiment by using correlated photons produced in type I Parametric Down Conversion. Our results confirm QM contradicting dBB predictions

    Response of rice varieties to short-day treatment

    Synchronisation of flowering was effected in fifty rice varieties, ranging from early to very late duration, by giving 8 light hours photoperiod to 30 days old seedlings for 20 days. The results showed that the later the type, the greater was its response to photoperiod and regression value of photoperiod response over the normal duration of the varieties was approximately 1.0

    Biomimetic scaffolds hold great promise for therapeutic repair of cartilage, but although most scaffolds are tested with cells in vitro, there are very few ex vivo models (EVMs) where adult cartilage and scaffolds are co-cultured to optimize their interaction prior to in vivo studies. This study describes a simple, non-compressive method that is applicable to mammalian or human cartilage and provides a reasonable throughput of samples. Rings of full-depth articular cartilage slices were derived from human donors undergoing knee replacement for osteoarthritis and a 3 mm core of a collagen/glycosaminoglycan biomimetic scaffold (Tigenix, UK) inserted to create the EVM. Adult osteoarthritis chondrocytes were seeded into the scaffold and cultures maintained for up to 30 days. Ex vivo models were stable throughout experiments, and cells remained viable. Chondrocytes seeded into the EVM attached throughout the scaffold and in contact with the cartilage explants. Cell migration and deposition of extracellular matrix proteins in the scaffold was enhanced by growth factors particularly if the scaffold was preloaded with growth factors. This study demonstrates that the EVM represents a suitable model that has potential for testing a range of therapeutic parameters such as numbers/types of cell, growth factors or therapeutic drugs before progressing to costly pre-clinical trials.The authors would like to kindly acknowledge funding from the EPSRC and Tigenix Ltd (LM), Technology Strategy Board and Tigenix Ltd (JW) and the NIHR (DH).This is the final version of the article.     Modeling and analysis of air campaign resource allocation: a spatio-temporal decomposition approach

    Abstract—In this paper, we address the modeling and analysis issues associated with a generic theater level campaign where two adversaries pit their military resources against each other over a sequence of multiple engagements. In particular, we consider the scenario of an air raid campaign where one adversary uses suppression of enemy air defense (SEAD) aircraft and bombers (BMBs) against the other adversary’s invading ground troops (GTs) that are defended by their mobile air defense (AD) units. The original problem is decomposed into a temporal and a spatial resource allocation problem. The temporal resource allocation problem is formulated and solved in a game-theoretical framework as a multiple resource interaction problem with linear attrition functions. The spatial resource allocation problem is posed as a risk minimization problem in which the optimal corridor of ingress and optimal movement of the GTs and AD units are decided by the adversaries. These two solutions are integrated using an aggregation/deaggregation approach to evaluate resource strengths and distribute losses. Several simulation experiments were carried out to demonstrate the main ideas.     Extension of Information Geometry to Non-statistical Systems: Some Examples

    Our goal is to extend information geometry to situations where statistical modeling is not obvious. The setting is that of modeling experimental data. Quite often the data are not of a statistical nature. Sometimes also the model is not a statistical manifold. An example of the former is the description of the Bose gas in the grand canonical ensemble. An example of the latter is the modeling of quantum systems with density matrices. Conditional expectations in the quantum context are reviewed.     Stage 3 N2 lung cancer: A multidisciplinary therapeutic conundrum

    The treatment of stage III N2 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains debated. There is an absence of a universally agreed definition of resectability for this heterogeneous group and a lack of trial data. We reviewed and compared current international guidelines and evidence surrounding management of stage III N2 NSCLC. The Irish and Australian guidelines advise subcategorising N2 disease into N2a (may be resectable) and N2b (never resectable). On the contrary, American and British guidelines avoid subcategorising N2 disease, emphasising importance of local MDT decisions. It is suggested that evidence for resection of stage III tumours is relatively weak, but that stage IIIA should generally be considered for resection, and stage IIIB is not recommended for resection. For resectable disease, surgery may be combined with neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy, or adjuvant chemotherapy followed by immunotherapy and radiotherapy in selected patients. There is some evidence that technically resectable disease can be treated solely with radiotherapy with similar outcomes to resection. In the event of unresectable disease, chemoradiotherapy has been the traditional management option. However, recent studies with chemoradiotherapy alongside immunotherapy appear promising. There are many factors that influence the treatment pathway offered to patients with stage III N2 NSCLC, including patient factors, team expertise, and local resources. Therefore, the role of MDTs in defining resectability and formulating an individualised treatment plan is crucial. [Abstract copyright: © 2024. Crown.
