    Relationship of lifestyle with academic achievement in nursing students

    A healthy lifestyle is one of the main factor in maintaining the health of people in society. With regard to the role of youth and students in public health, they must complete and follow a training program on lifestyle related factors. One of the main aim of the training centres is to improve the academic achievement of students. Aim: This study was designed to determine the correlation of lifestyle with academic achievement in nursing students. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, wherein all nursing students of School of Borujen Nursing were selected by census sampling. Data gathering tool was Walker’s lifestyle questionnaire which was modified for the purpose of the study. To evaluate the educational status of students, final grade point average was considered as an indicator of academic achievement. To analyze the data, SPSS version 16.0, and descriptive and analytical tests were used. Results: The results indicated that most subjects (61.01%) displayed moderate levels of lifestyle. Pearson’s correlation coefficient showed the significant positive relationship between lifestyle and academic achievement (p=0.03 and r=0.628). Conclusion: To improve the academic achievement of students, in addition to the cognitive abilities-perception, their lifestyle should also be considered. Therefore, it is suggested to incorporate lifestyle education in the curriculum of nursing students so as to improve their lifestyle

    A comparative study on the effects of verbal and non-verbal education on the knowledge and attitude of soldiers regarding the transmission and prevention of AIDS

    Aims: Aims: Todays attention on sexually transmitted diseases such as AIDS has significantly increased. Military services is the best place that can help to prevent the spread of the disease. The aim of this study is to compare the effect of different educational methods on soldiers' knowledge and attitudes about the transmission and prevention of AIDS. Methods: Ninety tree soldiers were assigned to three training groups using stratified sampling. Data gathering tools contained questions related to knowledge and attitude. Data were analyzed using SPSS 16. Results: According to the results regarding the attitudes of the soldiers in the lecture group, the difference between the pre-test and the post-test attitude scores was statistically significant (P=0.011). The difference of the attitudes between the pretest and posttest in the tutorial group was also significant (P=0.019). Knowledge of the participants in the lecture group and the training manual group differed significantly from that of the control group (P<0.01 and P<0.001 respectively). Conclusion: According to the findings, the indirect training method could be more effective on the durability of the knowledge of the soldiers

    Correlation between hope and mental health after mastectomy in breast cancer survivors

    Background & objectives: Mastectomy is one of the main treatments for breast cancer that may stimulate a lot of psychological distresses in women’s life. It may affect the level of hope among women. This study was conducted with the aim of assessing correlation between hope and mental health after mastectomy in patients with breast cancer. Methods: This is a descriptive-correlational study that one hundred patients with breast cancer after mastectomy referred to Seyed-Al-Shohada hospital of Isfahan in 2013 were selected by the convenient sampling method. Data gathering tool were SCL-25 mental health and Herth Hope Index and data were analyzed by SPSS-17. Results: According to the results, 49% of the subjects�had high hope and among the dimensions of the mental health, depressive dimension owned the highest average�of score (3.05±1.72). Based on the Spearman correlation coefficient test, there was a direct linear correlation between hope and mental health (p<0.001, � � �=0.565). Conclusion:�Because of positive relationship between hope and mental health adopting the counseling psychology as the major priority in health centers should be considered by health officials and managers will play a key role to decrease mental health problems in mastectomy survivors

    Physical Activity of Medical and Nonmedical University Students‏

    Background: The role of regular and contagious physical activity are widely recognized in decreases the risk of coronary heart disease, various cancers, obesity, osteoporosis and other health problems. Because investigations suggest that physical activity levels fall significantly during the period between adolescence and adulthood, there is considerable concern about youth physical activity. Since university students represent a significant sector of young adults and form a prominent sector of society from which the policy makers, their physical activities are of particular interest. The present study was carried out and compared physical activity status among Tabriz medical and nonmedical sciences university students. Methods: A descriptive comparative design was carried out with 384 Tabriz medical and 384 nonmedical science university students. Data concerning demographic and physical activity variables were collected by a self reported questionnaire. Independent sample t-test were conducted to compare of mean scores of physical activity and two way ANOVA test were conducted to determine whether socio demographic variables were associated with physical activity. Results: The finding study showed that 39.8% of medical and 37.2% of nonmedical science university students had risky physical activity status and only 6.5% of medical and 5.9% of nonmedical science university students had good risky physical activity status. No significant differences between mean scores of physical activity among two groups. 81.3% of medical and 85.2% of nonmedical science university students had tend to increase levels of their physical activity. Conclusions: It can be concluded that both medical and nonmedical science university students did have not appropriate condition regarding to physical activity and medical science students education and training had no influenced on physical activity of medical science university students. Therefore, universities should implement programs to increase student’s level of physical activity

    The Relation Between Body Esteem With Self Esteem And Perceived Social Support In Multiple Sclerosis Patients–Assessment.

    Abstract:Background& Objective: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disabled illness of that can highly effect on body esteem and self-esteem in patients. This study was to examine the relation between body esteem with self-esteem and perceived social support in MS patientsMethodology:This research Study was descriptive correlation that performed on 395 patients of the MS Society in Tehran by conveniencesampling. Data gathering tool was questionnaires of Body esteem, Self-esteem and Northouse social support. For data analysis, SPSS/16 was used.Results:The results showed that at Patients with MS, body esteem was in favorable level (42.25), self-esteem and perceived social support were at moderate levels (76.1, 39.5). Between body esteem with self-esteem and perceived social support and between self-esteem and perceived social support was significant linear relationship. Conclusion:Because of the impact of chronic diseases and complications of them on body esteem, self-esteem and perceived social support is undeniable and regarding that compatibility at chronic diseases as MS occurs faster with this factors thisistheresponsibility ofnursing that with recognizing factors of relatedincrease patient matching and sobe effective at their efficacyandself-care

    MENTAL HEALTH AND RELATED FACTORS IN STUDENT CENTERS OF RED CRESCENT SOCIETY ON UNIVERSITIES OF BORUJEN CITY

    Background: Psychological stress of stressful jobs can affect the mental health of its members and damage to the services quality to the clients. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the mental health and related factors among the volunteers’ groups and members of student centers of Red Crescent society in Borujen. Method: In this cross-sectional study, by random sampling about 230 members were studied and selected among student centers of Red Crescent society. Data was gathered by a two-part questionnaire consisted of demographic information and health survey (GHQ). Also, data was analyzed by using SPSS-16 and tests of Fisher exact and Chi-square. (0.05) Results: The results showed the obtained mean and standard deviation from the General Health Questionnaire between samples are 50.28±29.88 and totally about 56.52% had psychological disorders. The domain of mental health was examined in depression and anxiety about 65.21% and 68.69% respectively. Also, significant difference between marital statuses, education level and gender with mental health were observed. (p<0.05) Conclusion: According to the high prevalence of mental health problems in the research findings, officials’ attention involved in mental health in universities is essential in order to prevent and resolve the problems. In particular, student centers are the best places for planning and education to increase the level of youth mental health

    Self Esteem and its Associated Factors in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis

    Background & Aim: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) as a progressive disorder can deteriorate body image and the feeling of attractiveness and influence patients’ self-esteem through changing their cognitive experiences and attitude towards their body. Accordingly this study was conducted with aim of assessing self esteem and its related factors in patients with MS. Material & Methods: It was a descriptive, cross-sectional study. The subjects (n= 395) were recruited by convenience sampling from Multiple Sclerosis Society in Tehran. Rosenberg Self-Esteem Inventory was used as data collection tool. Data was analyzed by independent t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, Spearman correlation coefficient, chi-square test and post hoc Scheffe test using SPSS-PC (version 16). Results: The mean score of self-esteem was 17/5 ± 53/20. Most patients had moderate self-esteem, and only a small percentage of them (16.2%) had high self esteem. There were significant relationship between the patients’ self-esteem and their age, educational level, marital status, employment status and the duration of disease (P<0.05). Conclusions: Nurses are able to consider the patients’ esteem needs by recognition of high risk groups and provide appropriate interventions to improve the quality of life of these patients and their families

    Correlation of perceived social support and some of the demographic factors in patients with Multiple Sclerosis

    Introduction: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a progressive disease and degenerative myelin in the central neurons that its complications provide physical problems and mental illness. However, it seems that social support controlled psychological stresses and improved quality of life. The aim of this study was to determine the correlation of perceived social support and some of the demographic factors in patients with Multiple Sclerosis. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive-correlational study, 395 patients of the MS Society in Tehran were selected by continuous sampling. Data gathering instrument was “Social Support Questionnaire” of Nortouse (SSQ). Cronbach's alpha for this instrument was 0.90. Data was analyzed by SPSS/16. Findings: The results showed that 156 patients (39.5%) had perceived social support at moderate levels. Between perceived social supports, age, educational level, employment status and monthly income were significantly correlated. However, between perceived social support and sex, marital status, family or relatives’ risk, disease duration and history of hospitalization, significant correlation was not found. Conclusion: Regarding the perception of patients, nurses can by identify the high risk groups and prevent them from the isolation and with appropriate supportive interventions, improve their quality of life
