    Deep awareness as a factor of environmental motivation at sea

    There are environmental problems at sea and some of them are specific. The International Maritime Organization is on the way of strict controlling permanently intensification regulations. One of the most important of them is the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL). To prevent uncontrolled and undesired actions of seafarers officers are interested in strong methods including motivating others and themselves as leadership skills are requested by practice and the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW). After considering different types of motives, factors in/decreasing their effectiveness existing at sea, the authors developed the practical research, analyzed the revealed data on the nature of the dominating motives among cadets of the Maritime University and the seafarers, and concluded highly developed awareness of the existing pollution at sea. Established forming experiment proved that the deep awareness of environmental problems adds to the inside, the strongest environmental motivation to fallow International regulations, acceptable from both behavioral and self-controlling points of view. Further actualized professional self-organization strategy helped to educational ecological project development, which were involved in the working courses

    Surface superconducting states in yttrium hexaboride single crystal in a tilted magnetic field

    We present the results of an experimental study of the nucleation of superconductivity at the surface of a single crystal YB6_6 in a tilted dc magnetic field. A recently developed experimental technique allowed us to determine Hc3H_{c3} at each side of the sample as a function of the angle between the dc magnetic field and the surface. Experiment shows that the ratio Hc3/Hc21.28H_{c3}/ H_{c2}\approx 1.28 in the direction perpendicular to the surface dc field while according to the theory this ratio should be equal to 1. This sharp distinction cannot be ascribed to the surface roughness.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figure

    Quantile regression with group lasso for classification

    Applications of regression models for binary response are very common and models specific to these problems are widely used. Quantile regression for binary response data has recently attracted attention and regularized quantile regression methods have been proposed for high dimensional problems. When the predictors have a natural group structure, such as in the case of categorical predictors converted into dummy variables, then a group lasso penalty is used in regularized methods. In this paper, we present a Bayesian Gibbs sampling procedure to estimate the parameters of a quantile regression model under a group lasso penalty for classification problems with a binary response. Simulated and real data show a good performance of the proposed method in comparison to mean-based approaches and to quantile-based approaches which do not exploit the group structure of the predictors

    Nonmonotone Barzilai-Borwein Gradient Algorithm for 1\ell_1-Regularized Nonsmooth Minimization in Compressive Sensing

    This paper is devoted to minimizing the sum of a smooth function and a nonsmooth 1\ell_1-regularized term. This problem as a special cases includes the 1\ell_1-regularized convex minimization problem in signal processing, compressive sensing, machine learning, data mining, etc. However, the non-differentiability of the 1\ell_1-norm causes more challenging especially in large problems encountered in many practical applications. This paper proposes, analyzes, and tests a Barzilai-Borwein gradient algorithm. At each iteration, the generated search direction enjoys descent property and can be easily derived by minimizing a local approximal quadratic model and simultaneously taking the favorable structure of the 1\ell_1-norm. Moreover, a nonmonotone line search technique is incorporated to find a suitable stepsize along this direction. The algorithm is easily performed, where the values of the objective function and the gradient of the smooth term are required at per-iteration. Under some conditions, the proposed algorithm is shown to be globally convergent. The limited experiments by using some nonconvex unconstrained problems from CUTEr library with additive 1\ell_1-regularization illustrate that the proposed algorithm performs quite well. Extensive experiments for 1\ell_1-regularized least squares problems in compressive sensing verify that our algorithm compares favorably with several state-of-the-art algorithms which are specifically designed in recent years.Comment: 20 page
