Etiologic Agents of Bacterial Sepsis and Their Antibiotic Susceptibility Patterns among Patients Living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus at Gondar University Teaching Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia
This is an open access article distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited.Background. Bacterial sepsis is amajor cause of illness in human immunodeficiency virus infected patients. There is scarce evidence
about sepsis among HIV patients in Ethiopia. This study aimed to determine the etiologic agents of bacterial sepsis and their
antibiotic susceptibility patterns among HIV infected patients. Methods. A cross-sectional study was carried out from March 1
to May 2, 2013. One hundred patients infected with HIV and suspected of having sepsis were included. Sociodemographic data
were collected by interview and blood sample was aseptically collected from study participants. All blood cultures were incubated
aerobically at 35∘C and inspected daily for 7 days. The positive blood cultures were identified following the standard procedures and
antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed using disk diffusion technique. Data was entered by Epi-info version 3.5.1 and
analysis was done using SPSS version 20. Results. Of the study participants, 31 (31%) confirmed bacterial sepsis. The major isolates
were 13 (13%) Staphylococcus aureus, 8 (8%) coagulates negative staphylococci, and 3 (3%) viridans streptococci. Majority of the
isolates, 25 (80.6%), were multidrug resistant to two or more antimicrobial agents. Conclusions. Bacterial sepsis was a major cause
of admission for HIV infected patients predominated by Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase negative staphylococci species and
most of the isolates were multidrug resistant
Intel HEXL: Accelerating Homomorphic Encryption with Intel AVX512-IFMA52
Modern implementations of homomorphic encryption (HE) rely heavily on
polynomial arithmetic over a finite field. This is particularly true of the
CKKS, BFV, and BGV HE schemes. Two of the biggest performance bottlenecks in HE
primitives and applications are polynomial modular multiplication and the
forward and inverse number-theoretic transform (NTT). Here, we introduce Intel
Homomorphic Encryption Acceleration Library (Intel HEXL), a C++ library which
provides optimized implementations of polynomial arithmetic for Intel
processors. Intel HEXL takes advantage of the recent Intel Advanced Vector
Extensions 512 (Intel AVX512) instruction set to provide state-of-the-art
implementations of the NTT and modular multiplication. On the forward and
inverse NTT, Intel HEXL provides up to 7.2x and 6.7x speedup, respectively,
over a native C++ implementation. Intel HEXL also provides up to 6.0x speedup
on the element-wise vector-vector modular multiplication, and 1.7x speedup on
the element-wise vector-scalar modular multiplication. Intel HEXL is available
open-source at https://github.com/intel/hexl under the Apache 2.0 license and
has been adopted by the Microsoft SEAL and PALISADE homomorphic encryption
libraries

Statistical Methods for Dating Collections of Historical Documents
The problem in this thesis was originally motivated by problems presented with documents of Early England Data Set (DEEDS). The central problem with these medieval documents is the lack of methods to assign accurate dates to those documents which bear no date.
With the problems of the DEEDS documents in mind, we present two methods to impute missing features of texts.
In the first method, we suggest a new class of metrics for measuring distances between texts. We then show how to combine the distances between the texts using statistical smoothing. This method can be adapted to settings where the features of the texts are ordered or unordered categoricals (as in the case of, for example, authorship assignment problems).
In the second method, we estimate the probability of occurrences of words in texts using nonparametric regression techniques of local polynomial fitting with kernel weight to generalized linear models. We combine the
estimated probability of occurrences of words of a text to estimate the probability of occurrence of a text as a function of its feature -- the feature in this case being the date in which the text is written. The
application and results of our methods to the DEEDS documents are presented.Ph
Laws of large numbers for sequences and arrays of random variables
This thesis presents an up-to-date survey of results concerning laws of large numbers for sequences and arrays of random variables. We begin with Kolmogorov's pioneering result, the strong law of large numbers, and preceed through to Hu et al.'s, and Gut's recent result for weakly dominated random variables, for which we provide a simpler proof. We insist in particular on the techniques of proof of Etemadi and Jamison et al. Furthermore, analogues to the Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund theorem are given. This thesis illustrates the trade-off between the existence of higher moments and non i.i.d sequences and arrays of random variables to obtain the strong law of large numbers
