18968_hoe_prisd.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)An analysis of cooperation, institutions and coordination mechanisms shows that incentives play an important role in the knowledge-based economy. Knowledge-related, technological, organisational, social and international trends strengthen the significance of incentives. Yet, these developments do not necessarily contradict the operation of norms in the economy. In contrast, in a number of cases incentives in the knowledge-based economy perform better, because of norms that support reputation mechanisms. In particular norms that manifest themselves in the form of open social capital enhance reputation mechanisms. Open social capital more closely fits in with contemporary network relationships, in contrast to closed social capital that exists in traditional homogeneous societies. Open social capital supports cooperation in communities-of-practice in a company, which lays the foundation for knowledge-based core competences in the company.
