    Mechanical Demands of the Hang Power Clean and Jump Shrug: A Joint-level Perspective

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the joint- and load-dependent changes in the mechanical demands of the lower extremity joints during the hang power clean (HPC) and the jump shrug (JS). Fifteen male lacrosse players were recruited from an NCAA DI team, and completed three sets of the HPC and JS at 30%, 50%, and 70% of their HPC 1-Repetition Maximum (1-RM HPC) in a counterbalanced and randomized order. Motion analysis and force plate technology were used to calculate the positive work, propulsive phase duration, and peak concentric power at the hip, knee, and ankle joints. Separate three-way analysis of variances were used to determine the interaction and main effects of joint, load, and lift type on the three dependent variables. The results indicated that the mechanics during the HPC and JS exhibit joint-, load-, and lift-dependent behavior. When averaged across joints, the positive work during both lifts increased progressively with external load, but was greater during the JS at 30% and 50% of 1-RM HPC than during the HPC. The JS was also characterized by greater hip and knee work when averaged across loads. The joint-averaged propulsive phase duration was lower at 30% than at 50% and 70% of 1-RM HPC for both lifts. Furthermore, the load-averaged propulsive phase duration was greater for the hip than the knee and ankle joint. The jointaveraged peak concentric power was the greatest at 70% of 1-RM for the HPC and at 30% to 50% of 1-RM for the JS. In addition, the joint-averaged peak concentric power of the JS was greater than that of the HPC. Furthermore, the load-averaged peak knee and ankle concentric joint powers were greater during the execution of the JS than the HPC. However, the loadaveraged power of all joints differed only during the HPC, but was similar between the hip and knee joints for the JS. Collectively, these results indicate that compared to the HPC the JS is characterized by greater hip and knee positive joint work, and greater knee and ankle peak concentric joint power, especially if performed at 30 and 50% of 1-RM HPC. This study provides important novel information about the mechanical demands of two commonly used exercises and should be considered in the design of resistance training programs that aim to improve the explosiveness of the lower extremity joints

    More functions of torpor and their roles in a changing world

    Increased winter survival by reducing energy expenditure in adult animals is often viewed as the primary function of torpor. However, torpor has many other functions that ultimately increase the survival of heterothermic mammals and birds. In this review, we summarize new findings revealing that animals use torpor to cope with the conditions during and after natural disasters, including fires, storms, and heat waves. Furthermore, we suggest that torpor, which also prolongs longevity and was likely crucial for survival of mammals during the time of the dinosaur extinctions, will be advantageous in a changing world. Climate change is assumed to lead to an increase in the occurrence and intensity of climatic disasters, such as those listed above and also abnormal floods, droughts, and extreme temperatures. The opportunistic use of torpor, found in many heterothermic species, will likely enhance survival of these challenges, because these species can reduce energy and foraging requirements. However, many strictly seasonal hibernators will likely face the negative consequences of the predicted increase in temperature, such as range contraction. Overall, available data suggest that opportunistic heterotherms with their flexible energy requirements have an adaptive advantage over homeotherms in response to unpredictable conditions

    Coherent vs incoherent interlayer transport in layered metals

    The magnetic-field, temperature, and angular dependence of the interlayer magnetoresistance of two different quasi-two-dimensional (2D) organic superconductors is reported. For κ\kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2_2I3_3 we find a well-resolved peak in the angle-dependent magnetoresistance at Θ=90\Theta = 90^\circ (field parallel to the layers). This clear-cut proof for the coherent nature of the interlayer transport is absent for β\beta''-(BEDT-TTF)2_2SF5_5CH2_2CF2_2SO3_3.     Blood Transfusions in Obstetrics: Past, Present and Future

    The history of transfusion medicine took a turn after the discovery of blood types and blood storage possibilities at the beginning of the 20th century. Although complications as a result of blood product transfusions have since dramatically decreased, minor to fatal complications still exist and give reason to limit administration in situations where possible risks outweigh the benefits. New guidelines have been published in order to reduce the number of unnecessary blood product transfusions. Unfortunately past papers show that the new guidelines are not yet fully implemented. In Switzerland no recent study has been published in regards to the administration of blood products. Therefore the goal of our retrospective study is to calculate the trend and evaluate the practice of transfusion medicine at the University Hospital of Zurich in the department of Obstetrics. Women who gave birth and received at least one red blood cell, platelet or fresh frozen plasma (FFP) transfusion where selected from the department’s database. Complete information was found for 241 cases from January 1996 to February 2007. Information was collected from the department’s computer programs, completed and compared with archive data. Data was collected in regards to: demographics, type of delivery, blood loss, number and type of transfusions received, hematological lab values, patient complications, complications during and after labor, and type of anemia treatment. Although we expected to see a decreasing trend in red blood cell transfusions, our results show an increasing percentage of patients receiving blood transfusions after the year 2004. Furthermore, our data shows a number of FFP, platelet and red blood cell (RBC) transfusions being administered inappropriately with discrepancies in data administration. Educational outreach and quality assurance checks are options, which could help improve the acknowledgment, understanding and administration of the practice of blood product transfusion in our clinic

    Time-stepping beyond CFL: a locally one-dimensional scheme for acoustic wave propagation

    In this abstract, we present a case study in the application of a time-stepping method, unconstrained by the CFL condition, for computational acoustic wave propagation in the context of full waveform inversion. The numerical scheme is a locally one-dimensional (LOD) variant of alternating dimension implicit (ADI) method. The LOD method has a maximum time step that is restricted only by the Nyquist sampling rate. The advantage over traditional explicit time-stepping methods occurs in the presence of high contrast media, low frequencies, and steep, narrow perfectly matched layers (PML). The main technical point of the note, from a numerical analysis perspective, is that the LOD scheme is adapted to the presence of a PML.     Snoozing through the storm: torpor use during a natural disaster

    Although storms provide an extreme environmental challenge to organisms and are predicted to increase in frequency and intensity due to climate change, there are no quantitative observations on the behaviour and physiology of animals during natural disasters. We provide the first data on activity and thermal biology of a free-ranging, arboreal mammal during a storm with heavy rain and category 1 cyclone wind speeds. We studied a population of sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps), a species vulnerable to bad weather due to their small body size and mode of locomotion, in a subtropical habitat during spring when storms are common. Although torpor is generally rare in this species, sugar gliders remained inactive or reduced foraging times during the storm and further minimized energy demands by entering deep torpor. All animals survived the storm and reverted to normal foraging activity during the following night(s). It thus appears that heterothermic mammals have a crucial adaptive advantage over homeothermic species as they can outlast challenging weather events, such as storms and floods, by reducing metabolism and thus energetic needs

    A new cue for torpor induction: charcoal, ash and smoke

    Recent work has shown that the use of torpor for energy conservation increases after forest fires in heterothermic mammals, probably in response to the reduction of food. However, the specific environmental cues for this increased torpor expression remain unknown. It is possible that smoke and the novel substrate of charcoal and ash act as signals for an impending period of starvation requiring torpor. We therefore tested the hypothesis that the combined cues of smoke, a charcoal/ash substrate and food shortage will enhance torpor expression in a small forest-dwelling marsupial, the yellowfooted antechinus (Antechinus flavipes), because like other animals that live in fire-prone habitats they must effectively respond to fires to ensure survival. Activity and body temperature patterns of individuals in outdoor aviaries were measured under natural environmental conditions. All individuals were strictly nocturnal, but diurnal activity was observed shortly after smoke exposure. Overall, torpor in females was longer and deeper than that in males. Interestingly, while both males and females increased daily torpor duration during food restriction by >2-fold as anticipated, a combination of food restriction and smoke exposure on a charcoal/ash substrate further increased daily torpor duration by ∼2-fold in both sexes. These data show that this combination of cues for torpor induction is stronger than food shortage on its own. Our study provides significant new information on how a small forest-dwelling mammal responds to fire cues during and immediately after a fire and identifies a new, not previously recognised, regulatory mechanism for thermal biology in mammals

    Physiological and behavioral responses of an arboreal mammal to smoke and charcoal-ash substrate.

    The recent observation that torpor plays a key role in post-fire survival has been mainly attributed to the reduced food resources after fires. However, some of these adjustments can be facilitated or amplified by environmental changes associated with fires, such as the presence of a charcoal-ash substrate. In a previous experiment on a small terrestrial mammal the presence of charcoal and ash linked to food restriction intensified torpor use. However, whether fire cues also act as a trigger of torpor use when food is available and whether they affect other species including arboreal mammals remains elusive. To evaluate whether smoke, charcoal and ash can act as proximate triggers for an impending period of food shortage requiring torpor for mammals, we conducted an experiment on captive sugar gliders (Petaurus breviceps), a small, arboreal marsupial, housed in outside aviaries under different food regimes and natural ambient conditions. When food was available, fire simulation via exposure to smoke and charcoal-ash substrate caused a significant earlier start of activity and a significant decrease in resting body temperature. In contrast, only when food was withheld, did smoke and charcoal-ash exposure significantly enhance torpor depth and duration. Thus, our study not only provides evidence that fire simulation does affect arboreal and terrestrial species similarly, but also suggests that smoke and ash were presumably selected as cues for torpor induction because they indicate an impending lack of food
