THE IRISH ITINERANTS: SOME DEMOGRAPHIC, ECONOMIC AND EDUCATIONAL ASPECTS. BROADSHEET No. 18, May 1979

SOME selected characteristics of Irish itinerants are discussed in this paper. An account is given of some of the problems faced by itinerants based on factual material obtained from Irish official publications, books and articles on Irish itinerants, discussions with people who work with itinerants and the findings of unpublished censuses of itinerants taken by Local Authorities. The study does not involve social or psychological analysis but tries by the presentation of facts assembled together to "help, if in a small way, those who are trying to improve the lot of itinerants". The problem of itinerancy is seen by the authors as part of the problem of poverty. Itinerants are or were, on the whole, the dispossessed--poor, homeless, illiterate, despised." Some, particularly the roadside traders (whom many would not regard as itinerants), are reasonably well off but the great majority according to Patricia McCarthy (1975) were regarded as "marginal people in every sense . . . living a primitive and harsh existence." They are conscious of their poverty, avoid integration with the settled community, and have a low self esteem because of their dependence on charity and social welfare

Radiographic measurements of the trachea in domestic short haired and Persian cats

Tracheal diameter can be assessed from a thoracic radiograph, with assessment of tracheal diameter in dogs based on ratios between tracheal diameter and a skeletal measurement – however reference ranges are not available for the cat. Tracheal narrowing may cause significant clinical problems, although tracheal hypoplasia in dogs may be clinically silent, and is rarely reported in cats (both mesati- and brachycephalic). The tracheal diameter and trachea:thoracic inlet and trachea:rib ratios were calculated for populations of Domestic Short Haired (DSH) (n=68) and Persian (n=40) cats. This gave reference ranges for radiographic tracheal measurements in these breeds. It is proposed that the tracheal diameter in a normal DSH cat should be 18% of the diameter of the thoracic inlet, and compared to 20% in Persian cats

Creating and implementing an effective behavior management strategy in a second grade classroom

The purpose of this study is to ascertain the effectiveness of creating and implementing a self-management behavior system in a second grade classroom. Different types of behavior management were researched through journals discussing behavior management as well as interviews with classroom teachers. Self-management was determined to be a successful behavior management system and was thus chosen to be implemented in this classroom. An additional goal of this study is also to contribute more knowledge to the field of self-management research. This thesis will combine research, student and teacher questionnaires, focus group interviews and a classroom journal in order to determine the effectiveness of self-management as a behavior management strategy. This study determined that self-management is an effective form of behavior management in a classroom, and that the students in the classroom where the study took place enjoyed being able to monitor their own behavior

Transnationalism and Identity: the Concept of Community in Ghanaian Literature and Contemporary Ghanaian Culture

In my thesis, I use anthropology, literature, and adinkra, an indigenous art, to study Ghanaian concepts of community from an interactive standpoint. While each of these disciplines has individually been used to study the concept of community, the three have not previously been discussed in relation to one another. I explore the major findings of each field—mainly that in anthropology, transnational informants find communities upheld; in literature, transnational characters find the opposite; and in adinkra, there are elements of both continuity and dissolution—to discuss Ghanaian constructs of community in the transnational world. Throughout time, there have always been transnational individuals and concepts, but as globalization continues, transnationalism has become an ever-more vital topic, and combined with the common anthropological discussion of tradition and modernity, its influence on developing countries, like Ghana, is significant. Therefore, in my thesis, I explore how differing conceptions of community present themselves in each discipline, and how those divergences create a new understanding of place and identity

African Studies Center Working Paper No. 51INTRODUCTION: It is a widely acknowledged concept in the analysis of art traditions that in many instances the visual and verbal arts are purveyors of ideological beliefs. They may become tools in the persuasive efforts to express sets of beliefs and theories, to explain and to popularize them. As an excellent vehicle for communication, the visual and verbal arts can thus be highly inspired by the ideology of their creators, their commissioners, or both. It is the aim of this paper to show how this intimate relationship materializes itself in the visual and verbal domains in a West African kingdom, the Bamum State located in the Grass fields of Cameroon.
