    On the smoothness of the multi-BMPV black hole spacetime

    We demonstrate that, in a multi-BMPV black hole spacetime, the event horizon is not smooth. We explicitly show that for a simpler configuration comprising a line of static extremal black holes and a single BMPV black hole, the metric at the horizon of the BMPV black hole is once, but not twice, continuously differentiable. We argue that this result is also valid when all the black holes are rotating. The Maxwell field strength is shown to be continuous, but not differentiable at the horizon. We also briefly demonstrate that previous work done to show lack of smoothness of static multi-centre solutions in five dimensions is not significantly modified by the inclusion of a higher derivative term in the action for five dimensional supergravity.Comment: 17 pages; reference adde

    We find new solutions of IIA supergravity which have the interpretation of intersecting NS-5-branes at Sp(2)Sp(2)-angles on a string preserving at least 3/32 of supersymmetry. We show that the relative position of every pair of NS-5-branes involved in the superposition is determined by four angles.     Toward NS5 Branes on the Resolved Cone over Y^{p,q}

    Motivated by recent developments in the understanding of the connection between five branes on resolved geometries and the corresponding generalizations of complex deformations in the context of the warped resolved deformed conifold, we consider the construction of five branes solutions on the resolved cone over Y^{p,q} spaces. We establish the existence of supersymmetric five branes solutions wrapped on two-cycles of the resolved cone over Y^{p,q} in the probe limit. We then use calibration techniques to begin the construction of fully back-reacted five branes; we present an Ansatz and the corresponding equations of motion. Our results establish a detailed framework to study back-reacted five branes wrapped on the resolved cone over Y^{p,q} and as a first step we find explicit solutions and construct an asymptotic expansion with the expected properties.Comment: 23+17pp, no figures; v2: references added, various clarification

    By studying classes of supersymmetric solutions of D=11 supergravity with AdS_5 factors, we determine some properties of the dual four-dimensional N=1 superconformal field theories. For some explicit solutions we calculate the central charges and also the conformal dimensions of certain chiral primary operators arising from wrapped membranes. For the most general class of solutions we show that there is a consistent Kaluza-Klein truncation to minimal D=5 gauged supergravity. This latter result allows us to study some aspects of the dual strongly coupled thermal plasma with a non-zero R-charge chemical potential and, in particular, we show that the ratio of the shear viscosity to the entropy density has the universal value of 1/4 pi.Comment: Consistent truncation extended to include fermions.     Semiclassical strings in marginally deformed toric AdS/CFT

    We study string solutions in the beta-deformed Sasaki-Einstein gauge/gravity dualities. We find that the BPS point-like strings move in the submanifolds where the two U(1) circles shrink to zero size. In the corresponding T^3 fibration description, the strings live on the edges of the polyhedron, where the T^3 fibration degenerates to T^1. Moreover, we find that for each deformed Sasaki-Einstein manifold the BPS string solutions exist only for particular values of the deformation parameter. Our results imply that in the dual field theory the corresponding BPS operators exist only for these particular values of the deformation parameter we find. We also examine the non-BPS strings, derive their dispersion relations and compare them with the undeformed ones. Finally, we comment on the range of the validity of our solutions and their dependence on the deformation parameter.Comment: 29 pages, 9 figure

    Fermions and Type IIB Supergravity On Squashed Sasaki-Einstein Manifolds

    We discuss the dimensional reduction of fermionic modes in a recently found class of consistent truncations of type IIB supergravity compactified on squashed five-dimensional Sasaki-Einstein manifolds. We derive the lower dimensional equations of motion and effective action, and comment on the supersymmetry of the resulting theory, which is consistent with N=4 gauged supergravity in d=5d=5, coupled to two vector multiplets. We compute fermion masses by linearizing around two AdS5AdS_{5} vacua of the theory: one that breaks N=4 down to N=2 spontaneously, and a second one which preserves no supersymmetries. The truncations under consideration are noteworthy in that they retain massive modes which are charged under a U(1) subgroup of the RR-symmetry, a feature that makes them interesting for applications to condensed matter phenomena via gauge/gravity duality. In this light, as an application of our general results we exhibit the coupling of the fermions to the type IIB holographic superconductor, and find a consistent further truncation of the fermion sector that retains a single spin-1/2 mode.Comment: 43 pages, 2 figures, PDFLaTeX; v2: added references, typos corrected, minor change

    Supersymmetric AdS_5 solutions of M-theory

    We analyse the most general supersymmetric solutions of D=11 supergravity consisting of a warped product of five-dimensional anti-de-Sitter space with a six-dimensional Riemannian space M_6, with four-form flux on M_6. We show that M_6 is partly specified by a one-parameter family of four-dimensional Kahler metrics. We find a large family of new explicit regular solutions where M_6 is a compact, complex manifold which is topologically a two-sphere bundle over a four-dimensional base, where the latter is either (i) Kahler-Einstein with positive curvature, or (ii) a product of two constant-curvature Riemann surfaces. After dimensional reduction and T-duality, some solutions in the second class are related to a new family of Sasaki-Einstein spaces which includes T^{1,1}/Z_2.
