    Multiscaling in passive scalar advection as stochastic shape dynamics

    The Kraichnan rapid advection model is recast as the stochastic dynamics of tracer trajectories. This framework replaces the random fields with a small set of stochastic ordinary differential equations. Multiscaling of correlation functions arises naturally as a consequence of the geometry described by the evolution of N trajectories. Scaling exponents and scaling structures are interpreted as excited states of the evolution operator. The trajectories become nearly deterministic in high dimensions allowing for perturbation theory in this limit. We calculate perturbatively the anomalous exponent of the third and fourth order correlation functions. The fourth order result agrees with previous calculations.Comment: 14 pages, LaTe

    Statistical conservation laws in turbulent transport

    We address the statistical theory of fields that are transported by a turbulent velocity field, both in forced and in unforced (decaying) experiments. We propose that with very few provisos on the transporting velocity field, correlation functions of the transported field in the forced case are dominated by statistically preserved structures. In decaying experiments (without forcing the transported fields) we identify infinitely many statistical constants of the motion, which are obtained by projecting the decaying correlation functions on the statistically preserved functions. We exemplify these ideas and provide numerical evidence using a simple model of turbulent transport. This example is chosen for its lack of Lagrangian structure, to stress the generality of the ideas

    Optimal rotations of deformable bodies and orbits in magnetic fields

    Deformations can induce rotation with zero angular momentum where dissipation is a natural ``cost function''. This gives rise to an optimization problem of finding the most effective rotation with zero angular momentum.     Statistical geometry in scalar turbulence

    A general link between geometry and intermittency in passive scalar turbulence is established. Intermittency is qualitatively traced back to events where tracer particles stay for anomalousy long times in degenerate geometries characterized by strong clustering. The quantitative counterpart is the existence of special functions of particle configurations which are statistically invariant under the flow. These are the statistical integrals of motion controlling the scalar statistics at small scales and responsible for the breaking of scale invariance associated to intermittency.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Reproducibility of dynamically represented acoustic lung images from healthy individuals

    Background and aim: Acoustic lung imaging offers a unique method for visualising the lung. This study was designed to demonstrate reproducibility of acoustic lung images recorded from healthy individuals at different time points and to assess intra- and inter-rater agreement in the assessment of dynamically represented acoustic lung images. Methods: Recordings from 29 healthy volunteers were made on three separate occasions using vibration response imaging. Reproducibility was measured using quantitative, computerised assessment of vibration energy. Dynamically represented acoustic lung images were scored by six blinded raters. Results: Quantitative measurement of acoustic recordings was highly reproducible with an intraclass correlation score of 0.86 (very good agreement). Intraclass correlations for inter-rater agreement and reproducibility were 0.61 (good agreement) and 0.86 (very good agreement), respectively. There was no significant difference found between the six raters at any time point. Raters ranged from 88% to 95% in their ability to identically evaluate the different features of the same image presented to them blinded on two separate occasions. Conclusion: Acoustic lung imaging is reproducible in healthy individuals. Graphic representation of lung images can be interpreted with a high degree of accuracy by the same and by different reviewers

    Passive scalar turbulence in high dimensions

    Exploiting a Lagrangian strategy we present a numerical study for both perturbative and nonperturbative regions of the Kraichnan advection model. The major result is the numerical assessment of the first-order 1/d1/d-expansion by M. Chertkov, G. Falkovich, I. Kolokolov and V. Lebedev ({\it Phys. Rev. E}, {\bf 52}, 4924 (1995)) for the fourth-order scalar structure function in the limit of high dimensions dd's. %Two values of the velocity scaling exponent ξ\xi have been considered: %ξ=0.8\xi=0.8 and ξ=0.6\xi=0.6. In the first case, the perturbative regime %takes place at d30d\sim 30, while in the second at d25d\sim 25, %in agreement with the fact that the relevant small parameter %of the theory is 1/(d(2ξ))\propto 1/(d (2-\xi)). In addition to the perturbative results, the behavior of the anomaly for the sixth-order structure functions {\it vs} the velocity scaling exponent, ξ\xi, is investigated and the resulting behavior discussed.Comment: 4 pages, Latex, 4 figure

    Dynamical Organization around Turbulent Bursts

    The detailed dynamics around intermittency bursts is investigated in turbulent shell models. We observe that the amplitude of the high wave number velocity modes vanishes before each burst, meaning that the fixed point in zero and not the Kolmogorov fixed point determines the intermittency. The phases of the field organize during the burst, and after a burst the field oscillates back to the laminar level. We explain this behavior from the variations in the values of the dissipation and the advection around the zero fixed point.Comment: 4 pages, REVTex, 3 figures in one ps-fil
