Ivory Coast microtektite strewn field: description and relation to the Jaramillo geomagnetic event

During the present study the Ivory Coast microtektite layer was found in cores from five equatorial Atlantic sites, bringing the total number of Ivory Coast microtektite-bearing cores to eleven. The strewn field appears to be restricted to between 9°N and 12°S latitude. There is a general increase in the concentration of microtektites towards the Bosumtwi crater, which is generally thought to be the source of the Ivory Coast tektites. The relationship between the onset of the Jaramillo subchron and the Ivory Coast microtektite layer has been investigated in six cores. A plot of the difference in depth between the base of the Jaramillo subchron and the microtektite layer versus sediment accumulation rate was used to determine the average post-depositional remanent magnetization (PDRM) acquisition depth and the age difference between the onset of the Jaramillo subchron and the deposition of the microtektites. Assuming that the PDRM acquisition depth does not vary with sediment accumulation rate, we find that the average PDRM acquisition depth is 7 cm and that the microtektites were deposited approximately 8 ky after the onset of the Jaramillo subchron. This indicates that the impact responsible for the Ivory Coast tektites and microtektites could not be causally related to the geomagnetic reversal at the base of the Jaramillo subchron

Epidermal choristoma: a case series and review of the literature

Epidermal choristoma is a rare, congenital lesion in which islands of ectopic skin are found within the oral cavity. They present as pigmented macules or papules on the tongue. Histologic appearances are characteristic and benign. We present three cases review the current literature and recommend observation of the lesion rather than complete excision should be considered as a reasonable management option

A system to measure 3-directional relative displacements for a biomedical application

A micro system for measuring the relative displacements between a bone and an implant in a prosthetic hip of a human being has been realized. Novel are the small dimensions of the system combined with the possibility to measure relative displacements in three directions. The system consists of a microsensor body, a mechanical transducer element made by precision mechanics, electronics, and the final package. The realization and test results of a prototype system are presented. Typical ranges for these prototypes are ±500 μm for lateral directions and ±50 μm in axial direction

Massive Schwinger model and its confining aspects on curved space-time

Using a covariant method to regularize the composite operators, we obtain the bosonized action of the massive Schwinger model on a classical curved background. Using the solution of the bosonic effective action, the energy of two static external charges with finite and large distance separation on a static curved space-time is obtained. Electrostatic self-energy and Bekenstein entropy bound in the massive Schwinger model

We obtain the electrostatic energy of two opposite charges near the horizon of stationary black-holes in the massive Schwinger model. Besides the confining aspects of the model, we discuss the Bekenstein entropy upper bound of a charged object using the generalized second law. We show that despite the massless case, in the massive Schwinger model the entropy of the black hole and consequently the Bekenstein bound are altered by the vacuum polarization.Comment: 14 pages, accepted for publication in "Gen. An Experimental Performance Comparison of 3G and Wi-Fi

Abstract. Mobile Internet users have two options for connectivity: pay premium fees to utilize 3G or wander around looking for open Wi-Fi access points. We perform an experimental evaluation of the amount of data that can be pushed to and pulled from the Internet on 3G and open Wi-Fi access points while on the move. This side-by-side compar-ison is carried out at both driving and walking speeds in an urban area using standard devices. We show that significant amounts of data can be transferred opportunistically without the need of always being connected to the network. We also show that Wi-Fi mostly suffers from not being able to exploit short contacts with access points but performs compa-rably well against 3G when downloading and even significantly better while uploading data.

Paediatric and adolescent athletes in Switzerland: age-adapted proposals for pre-participation cardiovascular evaluation

High-level sports competition is popular among Swiss youth. Even though preparticipation evaluation for competitive athletes is widespread, screening strategies for diseases responsible for sudden death during sport are highly variable. Hence, we sought to develop age-specific preparticipation cardiovascular evaluation (PPCE) proposals for Swiss paediatric and adolescent athletes (under 18 years of age). We recommend that all athletes practising in a squad with a training load of at least 6 hours per week should undergo PPCE based on medical history and physical examination from the age of 12 years on. Prior to 12 years, individual judgement of athletic performance is required. We suggest the inclusion of a standard 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) evaluation for all post-pubertal athletes (or older than 15 years) with analysis in accordance with the International Criteria for ECG Interpretation in Athletes. Echocardiography should not be a first-line screening tool but rather serve for the investigation of abnormalities detected by the above strategies. We recommend regular follow-up examinations, even for those having normal history, physical examination and ECG findings. Athletes with an abnormal history (including family history), physical examination and/or ECG should be further investigated and pathological findings discussed with a paediatric cardiologist. Importantly, the recommendations provided in this document are not intended for use among patients with congenital heart disease who require individualised care according to current guidelines
