    A Reformulation of the Economic Theory of Fertility

    When parents are altruistic toward children, the choices of fertility and consumption come from the maximization of a dynastic utility function. The maximization conditions imply first, an arbitrage condition for consumption across generations, and second, the equation of the benefit from an extra child to the net cost of rearing that child. These conditions imply that fertility in open economies depends positively on the world interest rate, on the degree of altruism, and on the growth of child-survival probabilities; and negatively on the rate of technical progress and the growth rate of social security. The growth of consumption across generations depends on changes in the net cost of rearing children, but not on interest rates or tirne preference. Even when we include life-cycle elements, we conclude that the growth of aggregate consumption per capita depends in the long run on the growth of consumption across generations. Thereby we show that real interest rates and growth rates of consumption per capita would be unrelated in the long run.

    Cluster Issue on Microplasmas

    Atmospheric-pressure diffuse discharge plasmas are susceptible to instabilities and, in particular, to arcing (the glow-to-arc transition). Some of the most promising approaches to ‘stabilizing’ atmospheric-pressure plasmas are based on the recognition that arc formation can be avoided when the plasmas are generated and maintained in spatially constricted geometries with dimensions from tens to hundreds of microns. Known as microplasmas or microdischarges, these weakly-ionized discharges represent a new and fascinating realm of plasma science in which several scientific issues, such as the potential breakdown of pd scaling and the role of boundary-based phenomena, come to the fore. In contrast to ‘macroplasmas’ typically produced at pressures well below one atmosphere, high-pressure microdischarges offer the formation of transient molecular species, such as the rare gas excimers, that are generated by three-body collisions. When excited with sub-microsecond pulses, microplasmas can exhibit significant shifts in electron and ion temperatures and in the electron and ion energy distribution functions, which can be exploited in applications such as intense UV/VUV light sources and for the selective production of chemically reactive radicals. The technological applications of these stable high-pressure microplasmas have outpaced the detailed understanding of the plasma physics and the key processes in these plasmas on a microscopic level

    Using radio galaxies to find super-structures

    Radio galaxies are excellent at tracing large-scale structure due to their high bias. We present new results from the TONS08 radio galaxy redshift survey. We find unequivocal evidence for a huge (at least 80 x 80 x 100 Mpc^3) super-structure at redshift z=0.27, confirming tentative evidence for such a structure from the 7C redshift survey (7CRS). A second, newly discovered super-structure is also tentatively found at redshift 0.35 (of dimensions at least 100 x 100 x 100 Mpc^3). Out of the total sample size of 84 radio galaxies, at least 25 are associated with the two super-structures. We use quasi-linear structure formation theory to estimate the number of such structures expected in the TONS08 volume if the canonical value for radio galaxy bias is assumed. Under this assumption, the structures represent ~ 4-5 sigma peaks in the primordial density field and their expected number is low (10^{-2}-10^{-4}). Fortunately, there are several plausible explanations (many of which are testable) for these low probabilities in the form of potential mechanisms for boosting the bias on large scales. These include: the association of radio galaxies with highly biased rich clusters in super-structures, enhanced triggering by group/group mergers, and enhanced triggering and/or redshift space distortion in collapsing systems as the growth of super-structures moves into the non-linear regime. Similar structures could have been missed in previous surveys because of the effects of Poisson-sampling fluctuations.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures.     Terminal Care and The Value of Life Near Its End

    Medical care at the end of life, estimated to contribute up to a quarter of US health care spending, often encounters skepticism from payers and policy makers who question its high cost and often minimal health benefits. However, though many observers have claimed that such spending is often irrational and wasteful, little explicit analysis exists on the incentives that determine end of life health care spending. This paper attempts to provide the first rational and systematic analysis of the incentives behind end of life care. The main argument we make is that existing theoretical and empirical analysis of the value of life do not apply, and often under-values, the value of life near its end and terminal care. We argue that several factors drive up the value of life near its end including the low opportunity cost of medical spending near ones death, the value of hope including living into new innovations, and the potential positive effect of on the value of life from being frail. We calibrate the ex-post value of hope associated with treatments for HIV patients to be as much as four times as high as standard per-capita estimates of treatment effects and as many as two and a half times as high as aggregate values across all cohorts.

    This manual describes IPS supported employment and education services for adolescents and young adults (IPS-Y). IPS stands for Individual Placement and Support and indicates a type of supported employment program that is evidence-based for people who have mental illnesses. Growing evidence indicates that IPS may be an effective approach for other populations and age groups as well. IPS practitioners in Maryland and other states helped us learn more about serving youth as a part of developing this manual. Young workers and students also described what helped them and what may benefit other youth. We appreciate their assistance in developing this manual

    Comparative study of the modulation of fructose/sucrose-induced hepatic steatosis by mixed lipid formulations varying in unsaturated fatty acid content

    BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common cause of chronic liver disease in developed countries. NAFLD encompasses a spectrum of diseases, ranging from hepatic steatosis to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), cirrhosis, and liver failure. The etiology of NAFLD remains unclear but is thought to relate to increased fatty acid flux within the liver that results in toxic fatty acid metabolite production. One source of increased fatty acid flux is fructose/sucrose-induced hepatic lipogenesis. Current treatment for NAFLD encompasses dietary modifications. However, little scientific evidence exists on which to base many dietary recommendations, especially the intake of different types of carbohydrates and fats. We hypothesized that lipid mixtures of unsaturated fatty acids would inhibit lipogenesis and subsequent hepatic steatosis induced by high carbohydrate diets. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of different complex mixtures of fatty acids upon the development of fructose/sucrose-induced hepatic steatosis. METHODS: C57BL/6 mice were randomized to normocaloric chow-based diets that varied in the type of carbohydrate (starch, sucrose, fructose). Animals in each carbohydrate group were further randomized to diets that varied in lipid type (no additional lipid, soybean oil, fish oil, olive/soybean oil, macadamia nut oil). These oils were chosen based upon their content of omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, omega-9 monounsaturated fatty acids, or omega-7 monounsaturated fatty acids. Fatty acid flux in the liver was determine by assessing hepatic lipid content (steatosis). We also assessed fatty acid levels in the plasma and liver of the animals, hepatic lipogenesis activity, hepatic stearoyl-CoA-1 desaturase activity, and hepatic elongase activity. RESULTS: Animals consumed similar amounts of the diets and maintained normal body weights throughout the study. Both sucrose and fructose induced hepatic lipogenesis and steatosis, with fructose being more potent. All mixed lipids similarly inhibited steatosis, limiting lipid content to levels found in the control (starch) animals. Lipogenesis and stearoyl-CoA-1 desaturase activity were increased in the sucrose and fructose groups. Levels of these enzymatic processes remained at baseline in all of the lipid groups. CONCLUSION: This is the first study to compare various complex lipid mixtures, based upon dietary oils with different types of long-chain fatty acids, upon development of sucrose/fructose-induced steatosis. Both carbohydrate source and lipid content appear important for the modulation of steatosis. Moderate intake of complex lipids with high unsaturated to saturated fatty acid ratios inhibited both lipogenesis and steatosis
